Charriol Watches & Jewellery : Brand Profile, History and Products

Passionate, ambitious, instinctive: against everybody’s advice, Philippe Charriol created his own company in 1983. He was 40 years’ old at the time. Twenty-five years later, Charriol is a successful world-renowned brand. If he had listened to the advice of those around him in the early 1980s, Philippe Charriol would never have set up his own company. He chose to ignore the pessimists.

When launching his brand in 1983, Philippe Charriol began by doing exactly the opposite of what others were doing. Rather than first making a name for himself on the Place Vendôme in Paris, or in Switzerland, and thus building a reputation before spreading out towards the world at large, he settled in Geneva – the historic cradle of watchmaking – and chose to start off by conquering a whole continent: Asia. The success achieved both in Japan and in South-East Asia enabled him subsequently to establish a significant presence on the United States and Middle East markets and finally to assert his brand worldwide.

Philippe Charriol was 40 when he left his job as executive director of a prestigious watch and jewellery company to found his own company. Ambitious, self-confident, provocative by nature and a connoisseur of fine arts and motor-racing, this Marseille-born entrepreneur was perfectly acquainted with the luxury world and consumer expectations. He was aware of the remarkable knowledge of prestige brands among up-and-coming generations, particularly in Asia, and of their immense respect for fine objects crafted in harmony with traditional forms of know-how. This enabled him to anticipate the explosion that was to be witnessed on these markets by all players in the luxury trade. The Charriol would therefore assert itself in this segment.

Twenty-seven years later, time has proven Philippe Charriol correct in his approach. The brand has sold over 1’300’000 watches, 2’300’000 pieces of jewellery and 550’000 belts. Since 1988, Charriol has also marketed 600’000 handbags and more than a half-million writing instruments. Representing the cornerstone of this success and the identifying token of the brand, the steel cable motif gave Charriol products their unmistakable originality. Right from the start, this characteristic element of the Charriol spirit captured the imagination of consumers the world over. It is indeed still the Charriol signature feature.

The brand is now present in over 75 countries and has an international network of almost 3’000 retailers points of sale, 485 corners and 98 Charriol boutiques. Twelve exclusive new points of sale are scheduled to open over the next 12 months. Philippe Charriol was one of the first to build on the concept of own-name boutiques. The first Charriol boutique was inaugurated in 1990. Fifteen years later, the majority of luxury brands have understood that these exclusive points of sale are essential instruments.

An equally indispensable factor is a broad range of products to nurture the brand and make it accessible to all. “The most affordable accessories are there to round out an image, a spirit and a look, and to enable clients to enter the brand world before moving upscale by purchasing a prestigious watch or piece of gold jewellery”. Charriol therefore came to master a broad range of skills at a very early stage and immediately developed successful complete collections of jewellery, leather goods, writing instruments and eyewear. These multi-product collections contributed to reinforcing the company image, earning it the status of a global luxury brand from the 1980s onwards.

Since then, the firm has become a family business. Philippe’s 32 year-old daughter Coralie Charriol currently serves as company Vice President and also as Art Director for the jewellery and leather goods lines. Fascinated by travel and fluent in five languages, Coralie Charriol has also become the brand icon by lending her image to the previous Charriol advertising campaign and some catalogues.

Inspired by his passionate interest in history, painting, sculpture and architecture, Philippe Charriol created several private Foundations in Asia over twenty years ago, dedicated to promoting contemporary art by giving many young Asian artists a chance to shine. While Philippe Charriol launched his brand when he turned 40, at the age of 50 he decided to fulfil another passion: motor-racing. More motivated than ever, he continues to drive his Lamborghini Diablo on European circuits, taking part in the FIA GT Championship, the Championnat de France Grand Tourisme, of which he has been French Champion in GT3, as well as the Andros Trophy.

The Charriol products achieved a turnover of more than 80 million Swiss Francs in 2009, geographically spread out as follows: 48% in Asia (half in South East Asia, quarter in Japan and quarter in Greater China), 12% in Europe, 30% in the Middle East and 10% in Western Hemisphere. The main markets were the GCC, Taiwan, Japan, Thailand, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia and the Philippines. Watchmaking accounts for almost 70% of turnover. The watch collection core range lies between 1’000 and 5’000 Swiss Francs. Gold jewellery sells for between 1’000 and 15’000 Swiss Francs, and jewellery in other materials for between 100 and 800 Swiss Francs. Bags are around 600 Swiss Francs, while writing instruments range between 200 and 300 Swiss Francs. Philippe Charriol has its international headquarters in Geneva, along with its own Hong-Kong-based distribution company for mainland China. Philippe Charriol companies employ over 120 people around the world.

Coralie Philippe Charriol
Coralie, daughter of Philippe Charriol, is currently Vice President and Creative Director for jewelry and leathergoods at CHARRIOL, the Swiss luxury marquee created by her father in 1983. From her home base in New York where she lives with her husband and two children, Coralie devotes her time to working with CHARRIOL’s designers to create and refine the jewelry and leathergoods collections. Her responsibilities take her around the world on a regular basis, not only between CHARRIOL’s two headquarters in Geneva and Hong Kong, but also to visit key clients and the brand’s partners across Asia (Japan, Philippines, and Indonesia), the Middle East, South/Central America, and the Caribbean.

Life as a nomad is second nature to Coralie. Born in Hawaii, she has lived in Hong Kong, Geneva, London, Paris and Boston. She also acquired a taste for travel from her father who, in addition to his criss-crossing the globe for his work, also took his children with him on vacation to the four corners of the earth. By the age of 16, Coralie had visited 26 different countries! This experience has endowed her with an extremely open-minded attitude, an ability to approach all cultures without prejudices and fluency in five languages (French, English, Spanish, Italian and Japanese) – a major asset in the exercise of her profession.

Coralie cultivated her artistic flair during her studies at Tufts University (Boston), as well as certificate programs at the Gemmology Institute of America (New York) and the New York Film Academy (New York). As luck would have it, one of her assignments during a design course she was taking along with other disciplines was to create accessories. After her father saw her talent, he asked Coralie to re-launch his brand’s accessories collections. CHARRIOL produced its first leather goods collection under the name “Coralie” and entrusted her with promoting the range in Asia and the Middle East. Now in her 10th collection of leathergoods, Coralie has brought the highest quality and design to the CHARRIOL line.

Devon Tread 1

Tread 1 is an engineering masterpiece and the debut watch from the new line of timepieces from Los Angeles based watch maker Devon Works, LLC.The Tread 1ʼs unique functionality reinvents the watch, extending far beyond the boundaries of traditional watchmaking. The movement of the Tread 1 is a mesmerizing display of Devonʼs patented interwoven system of time belts. This series of belts expresses hours and minutes in exacting motion, while the seconds indicator runs in continuous motion. To ensure temporal accuracy, a proprietary optical recognition system monitors each belt position at all times. The sleek, bold Tread 1 has a unique aesthetic unlike any other timepiece. Design inspiration for this luxury watch came from industrial conveyor belts and motorcycles.

Four extremely compact microstep motors, powered by a lithium polymer rechargeable cell that will run for up to two weeks on a single charge, drive the movement of the four belts with efficiency, exacting power and steadfast accuracy. The belt assemblies are mounted on a central chassis, which allows for the perfect clearance of the moving parts and also creates the illusion that the parts are floating within the case. Fiber-reinforced glass nylon allows for belts that are only 2/1,000 of an inch thick while being strong and stable enough to ensure continuous accuracy. The design of the Tread 1 tested the limits of current watchmakers, so Devon went to an industry experienced in pushing the limits of engineering, physics and even gravity. Devon enlisted a California aerospace engineering company to help develop the intricate technology required to support the revolutionary movement of the Tread 1.

As Devon founder Scott Devon says, “In the aerospace industry, people go to work every day to make the impossible happen.” Working with California-based talent also syncs with Devonʼs other mandate: “Our timepieces will be wholly developed and manufactured in the U.S. in order to capture the unique character of American dreams.” To articulate this vision and launch the brand, Devon enlisted the expertise of Peter Arnell of world-renowned multidisciplinary brand and product invention firm Arnell to oversee brand identity and communications. As Chairman of Arnell, Peter Arnell spearheaded strategic brand planning and ideation, including logo design, digital brand identity, website, brochure and collateral design.

Whether working on a car, motorcycle or watch, Scott Devonʼs challenge to his design team is both simple and daunting: “We seek to create a design that redefines the category. We consult with experts in a variety of fields in order to build new innovations and keep pushing boundaries.” He demands that his team of artists, inventors and designers work together to deliver technological breakthroughs and fresh, modern, never-seen-it-before designs.

All of this adds up to head-turning aesthetics. With Tread 1, Devon immediately establishes a leading-edge vision and an exquisite command of the artistry of watch design. This must-have timepiece is an essential addition to any serious watch collection. The Tread 1ʼs groundbreaking design raises high expectations and anticipation for future luxury products from Devon.

Bell & Ross Instrument BR 01-92 COMPASS Limited Edition

Bell & Ross presents its latest product-BR 01 COMPASS watch, which is inspired by an air navigation tool. The BR 01 COMPASS watch is faithful to the Bell & Ross philosophy, taking its inspiration from aircraft cockpits where each instrument is a reference point in terms of readability, reliability and performance. Following the BR 01 RADAR, the watchmakers at Bell & Ross turned their attention to another cockpit instrument display, the navigation compass. Bell & Ross has borrowed this tool’s precise, instantaneous display mode and adapted it to a watch: the BR 01 COMPASS .

The appeal of the BR 01 COMPASS is its method of reading the time inspired by the compass. Similar to how the original navigation instrument is read, the time on the BR 01 Compass is displayed by a fixed mark under which the hours and minute numbers file past. This unique way of telling time is amazingly simple and fun to use. The dial is comprised of two independent concentric discs with 12hour and 60 minutes graduations, respectively. A vertical white line under the crystal is used to tell the time by reading the large hour numeral and the small minute number from the top down.

The bezel outlines two windows divided by a bar symbolizing the horizontal plane.
• The upper window is devoted entirely to telling the time.
• The lower tinted window reveals the full rotation of the discs.

Design and producing the BR 01 COMP ASS was a true technical challenge requiring a concerted effort by the company’s finest watchmaking engineers.
  • To counterbalance the weight differential generated by using discs instead of hands, Bell & Ross has created ultra-light discs that do not impinge on either the power reserve or the accuracy of the watch. Both discs are distortion-proof to avoid even the smallest risk of friction. Specific materials and new techniques had to be developed to meet these dual challenges.
  • An adjustment to the nearest micron ensures constant disc parallelism during rotation. Ensuring the accuracy of the watch required all the expertise of master watchmakers.
By offering a totally new display, the new BR 01 COMP ASS is taking the bold gamble of going against the flow of traditional time telling. Unlike a fixed graduation with hands turning above it, the graduations turn underneath a fixed mark. With this ground-breaking model, Bell & Ross is putting its name on a true original.

Charriol Chronosport CELTICA

This powerful new quartz-driven model is a chronograph equipped with calendar functions. The date is displayed by a central hand, and the day and month through windows.

The black PVD-coated bezel is enhanced by steel or pink gold-plated inserts on one or two levels, the crown bearing the logo and the ornamental arcs on either side of the case. The steel lugs respectively carry the C logo at 12 o'clock and the Charriol name spelt out at 6 o'clock. The brand's signature Celtic spirit is echoed in the rubber strap with its six-row cabled motif.

This sporty 44 mm-diameter watch features a variety of strongly contrasting dials, including white mother-of-pearl and Kevlar counters or black guilloché and white Mother-of-pearl counters. Imbued with the distinctive Charriol identity, it will create a sensational effect on the wrist of dynamic men with discerning tastes.

Charriol PARISII Steel Watch Collection

The term PARISII originally referred to a Celtic people that lived on the site of what is now the city of Paris and gave the latter its name. From CELTIC to PARISII, Charriol offers a fresh journey through time with the new PARISII watch.

Creator of the Celtic concept through the use of the braided motif typical of Celtic torques, as well as that of its modern-day version, the steel cable, Charriol is exploring a new creative path with the PARISII watch.

The PARISII watch features a round steel case framed by a deep and harmoniously designed cabled motif interrupted only by four Geneva lugs. The crown itself is enhanced by a slender cabled motif. The inimitable Charriol style and personality of the PARISII watch are thus clearly apparent at first glance.

Available in two highly contemporary sizes measuring 42 mm for the Large model and 33 mm for the Small counterpart. The steel case is topped by a bezel in either steel or black ceramics, while the sapphire crystal is glareproofed for enhanced readability. All models are powered by a Swiss-made quartz movement with central seconds hand and the date.

The range of dials is nicely balanced between backgrounds with a black or silvered flinqué decoration, applied hour-markers and Roman numerals; and others in white mother-of-pearl backgrounds with diamond hour-markers or a Celtic and diamond décor.

Worn on a crocodile leather strap, the PARISII steel watch is the epitome of the classic beautiful round watch radiating understated and refined elegance, the kind that is to the watch what the famous little black dress (LBD) is to a woman’s wardrobe. Fitted with a steel bracelet featuring a link discreetly echoing the cabled motif, the PARISII handsomely evokes a sporting chic, urban look.

In black ceramics bezel and central link of the steel bracelet version, the PARISII watch embodies a modern, extrovert yet consistently elegant affirmation of style. And finally, the models with a diamond-set bezel naturally nudge the PARISII watch’s field of expression towards Charriol’s inherent jewellery sophistication.

Resolutely understated despite an abundance of original yet unostentatious details, the finely crafted and exquisitely finished PARISII watch admirably reflects an era distinguished by a quest for reliable values and for authentic, affordable and enduring luxury.

Greubel Forsey Double Tourbillon 30° “Edition Historique”

Since the launch of The Double Tourbillon 30° in 2004,Swiss luxury watch maker Greubel Forsey has released 3 lines based on this invention, namely : Contemporaine (which includes Vision and Secret models), Invention (which includes the Invention Piece 1 model) and Technique (the Double Tourbillon 30° Technique model).

This year Greubel Forsey decided to end the Double Tourbillon 30° Contemporaine by creating two unique series, the “Edition Historique”:
• 11 pieces in 5N red gold, and
• 11 pieces in platinum.

The closure of the Double Tourbillon 30° Contemporaine is a strong symbol for the brand: This line is heavily steeped in history as it is the timepiece which launched the Greubel Forsey adventure and forms the foundation of legitimacy for the inventions that followed. The decision to cease the Double Tourbillon 30° Contemporaine after six successful years will also see Greubel Forsey channelling new energy in creating systems, inventions and to explore new avenues.

The complexity of this timepiece is not only limited to the tourbillon system, but is visible in other aspects including a new kind of dial. This exclusive gold dial integrates three sapphire-crystal plates. These complex insertions are engraved and enhanced by a 3D structured text. The bezel with beveled relief gives an original look to this final edition, a new interpretation of the style of the earlier models while retaining the intrinsic design features of a Greubel Forsey timepiece. Like the other Greubel Forsey timepieces, the Double Tourbillon 30° expresses the thinking of its creators. Visually, you will also discover the 3D structured text on the dial and engraved hand-decorated curved plates affixed to the sides of the case extolling the philosophy and skill of the inventor watchmakers.

Invented in the early nineteenth century for the pocket watch and virtually unchanged since, the tourbillon aims to eliminate the equilibrium difference of the balance spring caused by gravity. However, since the beginning of their adventure together, the inventor watchmakers Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey have always sought to exceed the achievements of watchmaking science, going further in the complexity and research to effectively improve the operation of the wristwatch. They developed a tourbillon caged within a second cage, so that this new complication will permanently cancel the rate errors due to gravity, taking account of all the usual positions of a wristwatch. Called the Double Tourbillon 30°, precisely because of the angle that connects the two rotating cages, this patented system provides a decisive technological progress and marks a milestone in the history of watch-making.

Double Tourbillon 30° “Edition Historique” in 5N red gold

SAINT HONORE WORLDCODE WATCH

The specifications set for making the new WORLDCODE watch from SAINT HONORE were very straightforward: create most elegant steel chronograph imaginable. The full force of SAINT HONORE savoir-faire rose to this challenge and the result has met every expectation.

The sophisticated design honours the traditional codes of great timepieces with particular attention given to the bezel and the strap.
The steel bezel decorated with six Roman numerals, the true signature of the WORLDCODE watch, comes in four finishes (colours): brushed steel, titanium, bronze, and red gold. Each bezel coordinates with an exclusive dial, with the three counters and day date that are typical of ETA movement chronographs. Guilloche engraving, “clous de Paris”, off-centre SAINT HONORE logo in the 1/10th second counter, and finely worked hands are all part of the powerful personality of the piece.

The round 41mm case melds into a metal bracelet with supremely clean lines, a three-piece work of art, with each link fitting perfectly to the wrist for unparalleled comfort. Not to be outdone, the finish subtly dazzles with polished and brushed effects.

Artya Tesla Squelette Quadri-Rotor 1/1 Unique Piece

The wonderful world of unique timepieces in the "Luxury Watchmaking" sector commands insanely unaffordable prices in the real world. Such watches remain the privilege of the exceptional few, not to mention the exceptionally wealthy few.

But it took the imagination of Yvan Arpa and his team, or rather teams, to rise successfully to the challenge of creating "unique pieces" at mass-production prices. The idea was to bring together the finest, supremely qualified master watchmakers, accustomed to working independently, with meticulous attention to detail and an eye to tradition, namely "Team 1". While "Team 2", however, was carefully hand-picked from among those Artists drawn by Conceptual Art, fired by an all-consuming passion for combining the often somewhat contradictory, if not mutually exclusive, Art and Technology.

The result of this collision of ideas was a resounding success: without suffering loss of quality, or comprising the product's luxury appeal, the price squeeze immediately led to the birth of a legendary object. After an interval of reflection/implementation and the creation of a master team, its craftsmen all pulling together to give form to the craziest of ideas, the dream became a reality, blurring the limits between the possible and the impossible, the one sometimes overlapping the other, much to the surprise of even the creators themselves.

The following details will give collectors and connoisseurs alike a clearer insight of the techniques involved and of the Art incorporated therein! But what truly stretches the boundaries of the imagination, what is more incredible still in this collection of unique one-off ArtyA pieces, their case having been literally struck by lightning, is that the Quadri-rotor squelettes have all been hand-crafted in their entirety.

It is in the presence of a genuine work of collective inspiration, in which conceptual Art (the lightning used to shape the case, the skeleton-work and hand-crafted dials) and the work of the fine watchmaker (rotor, hands, movements) come together to create an exclusive, one-of-a-kind objet d'art at a very affordable price.

1) "The ArtyA Team of master watchmakers" has:-
a) Meticulously blanked 3 oscillating weights ballasted by pieces of copper wire, each one lovingly wound by hand like an electrical coil, in order to increase the inertia of the main oscillating weight to which they are attached.

b) Painstakingly shaped the hands, twisting the copper wire to resemble a form reminiscent of the first electrical elements.

c) Minutely decorated the movement 2671 in accordance with fine watchmaking codes (circular graining and Côtes de Genève).

2) "The Contemporary Art team" has:-
a) Radically changed the look of a conventional watch case through the use of lightning, which, by means of thermal combustion, has brought about a unique transformation of colour and form.

b) The miniature dials are coated with filaments of gold leaf combined with pigments in a manual process unique in the field of watchmaking

c) The space between the movement and the case is a genuine example of skeleton decoration in which our master jeweller-watchmakers explore 3 themes:

i) The Quadri rotor électrique, a nod to electricity with its diodes, elements and other coils, powerfully evocative of the accoutrements required to tame the power of lightning.
ii) The Quadri rotor à filaments, a homage to the copper wires rampant throughout the world of electricity.
iii) The Quadri rotor bijoux, in which precious or semi-precious stones, seemingly suspended, appear to float amid the skeleton-work like a constellation in the heavens, thus harnessing the full power of light to which they are subjected.

Charriol Saint Tropez Jewellery Watch

St. Tropez is the most glamorous summer resort in the world with an international reputation and nicknamed "Fille de la Mer" (daughter of the sea) by its inhabitants. Saint Tropez is also the name of a one of the legendary models in the Charriol watch collection, of which a new version is now being presented.
The new Saint Tropez watch enhances the charm of the original model without betraying the initial concept. The ultra-thin, refined steel case – 30mm diameter, is topped by a broad bezel adorned with white or black mother-of-pearl and graced with raised hour-markers and Roman numerals.

The dial with its understated, pared-down style comes in white or pink mother-of-pearl or sunburst black versions, enlivened by a small seconds subdial at 6 o’clock. Finally, the bracelet composed of six supple steel cables is accompanied by a decorative and secure chain composed of maritime-inspired links.

The new Saint Tropez watch lends a distinctively modern touch to the Charriol "jewellery watch" concept, particularly with a remarkable Bronze-coloured version.

Pontos Chronographe Réctangulaire Full Black : Official watch of the Maurice Lacroix Bering Strait Expedition

Maurice Lacroix Bering Strait Expedition is more than just a top-class sporting event: it is also an exciting journey of discovery through the pathless terrain of Alaska and Russia.During this expedition, a team of adventurers has set out to cross the Bering Strait by kiteboard, setting three world records in the process.

The Maurice Lacroix Bering Strait Expedition will begin in July 2010 with the motto of “Follow Your Convictions”. The goal of the expedition is to cross Bering Strait from Alaska to Russia on kiteboard, setting three world records:

1.The first crossing of the Bering Strait by kiteboard.
2.The first crossing from America to Asia by kiteboard.
3.The first crossing of the International Date Line by kiteboard.

100 km – six to eight hours of complete dedication – must be travelled by kiteboard, but the adventure begins long before the actual crossing. Extreme athletic performances of this kind require a preparation phase of several months, with daily training. Only those who are physically and mentally fit stand a chance against wild waters with temperatures as low as 2-3°C.

In addition to the physical challenges, the expedition team also faces organisational difficulties; the journey to the starting point in Wales, Alaska is in itself an adventure through pathless territory.

The team will set up its base and prepare for the traverse in Wales, Alaska. They will then have three weeks at the most to wait for the perfect weather conditions and attempt the world record before the Bering Strait freezes over again.

The Maurice Lacroix Bering Strait Expedition can be followed live on the micro-site www.beringstraitexpedition.com. The daily journal will post the latest pictures and films and will provide continual updates about the adventure. It will also provide fascinating background information about the expedition and kite-boarding in general.

Pontos Chronographe Réctangulaire Full Black is the Official watch of the Maurice Lacroix Bering Strait Expedition. The watch is masculine down to the last detail, embodying strength and vitality. Perfectly dark, perfectly readable, and perfectly monochrome, the state-of-the-art Pontos Chronographe Réctangulaire Full Black presents a world built on the principles of sophisticated design, pugnacity and resoluteness. This is what makes the Pontos Chronographe Réctangulaire Full Black the perfect companion for the Bering Strait Expedition: courageous, goal-oriented and unrelenting!

Sporty. The rectangular case with innovative ceramic coating – which makes it more robust and rightly affords it a place in the exclusive circle of technological chronometers – confidently stands its ground. Its sporty appearance, emphasised by a strong rubber strap, leaves no room for colour variations. Clad entirely in black, the chronograph is ready to tackle time head-on.

Full-blooded. Its black dial has alluring magnetism. The colour-co-ordinated hour-markers give it structure and frame the chronograph hands in the centre. The 30-minute and 12-hour counters are located face one another across the dial – one at 12 o’clock; its opponent at 6 o’clock. They are flanked by the small seconds at 9 o’clock and the date display at 3 o’clock: a formation that promises a hard fight, but one whose score is easy to follow thanks to the illuminated tips of the hands.

High performance. Even the ML 112 automatic movement visible through the transparent case back presents itself from two different sides – one that appears in a more elegant handcrafted Côtes de Genève decor, and a sporty side represented by rhodium tint. To guarantee precision and reliability, the balance wheel oscillates with a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and the movement has a power reserve of 46 hours.

2010 welcomes the return of The Open Championship to The Old Course at St Andrews Links, marking its 150th anniversary. With such a momentous year, interest in the world’s most famous golf venue has never been higher. Golf fans around the world will be able to own a very special, officially licensed product, commemorating this milestone year.

A new range of writing instruments, produced under the Montegrappa brand, will represent the quality, history and beauty associated with St Andrews Links. Izzy Cameron, St Andrews Links’ Brand Development Manager commented: “We are delighted to be working with a company with the history and heritage of Montegrappa. This license extends our world famous brand into an area where the owners of the pens can appreciate the beauty and craftsmanship of Montegrappa’s products, just as those who play our courses appreciate the legacy of 600 years of golfing history.”

Gary Jacobson of CPLG Sport, said, “The exceptional brand values associated with St Andrews Links align perfectly with those of Montegrappa. We feel the writing instrument range will reflect the beauty and history of the courses themselves.”

Adds Giuseppe Aquila of Montegrappa “We are proud to partner with St Andrews Links, The Home of Golf. St Andrews Links and Montegrappa are two historic institutions that are at the forefront of the respective fields – St Andrews Links preserves and promotes the noble game, for us it’s the beauty of handwriting.”

Fittingly utilising green celluloid and detailed with a golf ball cabochon on the cap with a reproduction of an original illustration of St Andrews Links on the barrel, the Montegrappa pens will signify six centuries of golf played on the Links at St Andrews since approximately 1400 AD. By the 19th century, golf had woven its way into the fabric of the local community, becoming a way of life for local citizens, as players, caddies or ball and club makers. Golf remains the cultural and economic life-blood of St Andrews to this day.

To represent the heritage of St Andrews Links, Montegrappa will be creating its pens in quantities that reflect important numbers in the legendary golf venue’s history:
150 marks the 150th anniversary of The Open Championship, which will be played at St Andrews Links in 2010; 18 represents the holes in a standard round of golf; 1400 (700+700) Golf has been played on the Links at St Andrews since approximately 1400 AD.

Montegrappa took inspiration from these significant figures and the St Andrews Links 2010 Limited Edition will consist of two series of pens, one engraved in low relief and the other hand painted, broken-down as follows:

* 150 Hand-Painted Fountain Pens with sterling silver trim
* 150 Hand-Painted Roller Balls with sterling silver trim

Antoine Preziuso Monumental Tourbillon: World’s Largest Wrist Watch Tourbillon

Swiss luxury watch maker Antoine Preziuso in reference to the Burj Khalifa (the World’s Tallest Skyscraper), created the World’s Largest Wrist Watch Tourbillon on the occasion of the opening of his Boutique in the Dubai Wafi Mall. With this 65 mm diameter Monumental Tourbillon Antoine Preziuso has achieved a breathtaking transposition from pocket to wrist!

Antoine Preziuso built this remarkable timekeeper on the basis of a pocket watch blank dating back to 1928 and made at the time by the watchmaking school of the Vallée de Joux. Assembled and finished in the purest watchmaking tradition – black polished chamfering, circular-grained and Côtes de Genève decoration – this colossal movement with a big heart will transport you to a distant era accompanied by the rhythm of its regular beat. Fitted with a Breguet balance-spring and a screwed balance beating at more than 18,800 vibrations per hour, this calibre won the first prize for chronometry in the thirties and has never been equalled since.
As tradition dictates, the tourbillon is located on the case back side. It is revealed in all its glory in a 2.5 cm diameter oversize frame. The double barrel system was conceived with the greatest respect for the original construction and guarantees a power-reserve of approximately 40 hours.

On the face side, this timepiece plays a modern game. The red gold dial, engraved, chiselled and satin-polished in low relief, is partially opened up to reveal the high tech movement. The serial number is unconventionally displayed at 12 o’clock, at the beginning of a semi-circle of hours punctuated by pillar indexes or Roman numerals. Exclusive and imposing hands add the finishing touch to this audacious aesthetic.
The creation, aptly named “monumental”, is enclosed in the biggest case ever made for a wristwatch. Its spectacular appearance is emphasised by the drum-type architecture: top and bottom bezels screwed on to the middle via 12 lateral pillars. The choice of titanium makes the structure outstandingly light so that the watch is comfortable to wear. The pillars, crown and mobile horns in red gold echo the dial. Each individual component of this structure can be removed to facilitate servicing of the watch. The Monumental Tourbillon comes with a leather strap teamed with a buckle which matches the case perfectly. Limited edition of 5. Suggested retail price is CHF 340’000.-

Bulgari Diagono X-PRO

Bvlgari presents Diagono X-PRO ,a new and distinctive watch model which is a synthesis of contemporary values and a multifunctional instrument. X -PRO is a sports oriented watch with an authenticated blend of contemporary values: extreme technical sophistication, innovative solutions, multiple functions and cutting edge materials. These principles are expressed through a movement, case and strap forming a coherent whole which boldly asserts the fact that Diagono X-PRO is ready to face any situation and any challenges.

Clearly affirming its identity as an heir to the iconic Diagono line, this latest timepiece opens up whole new horizons for the collection by enriching it with highly distinctive and technical timepiece that is both an authentic short time measurement thanks to its chronograph function;as well as a born traveller enabling its wearer to read off the time in three separate time zones.

the heart of this sophisticated machine is Calibre BVL 312 , built on a Valijoux 7750 base and customized for Bvlgari by La Joux - Perret Manufacture with an additional GMT Module. This high end self winding movement featuring integrated construction is fitted with an oscillating weight mounted on ball bearings and also boasting a column wheel. The latter enables the chronograph function to be gently activated via pushers and with great accuracy, while avoiding any jerking or resistance.
Its meticulously overall finishing is enhanced by the finest decorative techniques and surface treatments : the steel parts feature alternating polished , snailed and circular grained surfaces.Certain load bearing components are bevelled and the screw heads are polished .BVL Calibre beats at a cadence of 28,800 vibrations per hour and has a 48 hour power reserve.

Certified by the Swiss Official Chronometer testing Center (COSC), this movement drives indications of the hours and minutes, as well as a central chronograph seconds hands. The measured times are read off on a 30-minute counter at 3'o clock, and a 12 hour counter at 6'o clock, while the running small seconds counter appears at 9'o clock. This pointer type display is complemented by a date window at 4.30.

In addition to the standard display of local time by hour/minute hands, the two additional hour hands are identified in two very different ways to ensure optimal read off.The outer rim of the dial has a 24-hour graduation divided into two distinct 12-hour segments and clearly shows the day/night zones on a track swept over by the GMT pointer. It is adjusted via the crown, which is also used for the usual time setting and date corrections.
Meanwhile the third time zone is controlled by a notched bezel specially developed for the Diagono X-PRO :a bidirectional and extremely user friendly element bearing a 24-hour graduation, with the day/night zones marked off by alternating surface colours on two 12 hours segments featuring steel for day time and rubber for night time. This bezel is fitted a sophisticated and highly innovative device exclusive to Bulgari, which means it can be locked according to the chosen time zone.A simple press then frees it in order to enable the user to perform the desired adjustment. As soon as the pressure is lifted , the bezel remains perfectly motionless. This complex yet easy-to-use device avoids any risky handling.

The entire mechanism and its many functions are housed with in an exterior equal that matches the strong character of the Diagono X PRO. Boasting an ultra sophisticated construction its 45mm diameter case is composed of 104 parts.it combines steel, grade 5 titanium, rubber and a DLC treated steel middle. The latter high tech treatment hardens the metal and strongly increases its scratch-resistance.The striated rubber coating on the steel pushers and crown ensures an ideal grip.the case is fitted with a screw-down transparent sapphire crystal back enabling one to admire the refined mechanism powering the Diagono X PRO

On the front of the watch, a cambered glare proofed sapphire crystal protects a highly graphic and contemporary dial and ensures the readability of its various function displays. This black sapphire dial is composed of three superimposed elements , endowing it with understated elegance and functionality efficiency thanks to the colour contrast between the white superluminova coated hour markers , the tips of the hour and minute hands, the chronograph-function hour and minute hands, and that of the GMT pointer.Standing out from the rest, the chronograph seconds hand is red-tipped for instant readability, as is the small seconds hand.

In addition to the originality of the notched bezel, the imposing case boasts an innovative additional feature in the form of perfectly ergonomic lugs that can be adjusted along a seven degree angle in either direction. this complex device comprises shock-absorbers, thus enabling the watch to easily adapt to any type of wrist while ensuring an optimal and eminently comfortable fit. It is fitted with a rubber strap fastened by a pin buckle with steel inserts guaranteeing a perfect combination of rigidity and suppleness.

An accomplished blend of the finest watchmaking tradition mingled with avant-garde technologies , Diagono X-PRO proudly affirms its multi-talented, multi-purpose nature through a powerful aesthetic signature.

PATTON P42 HYPERBARE

The PATTON P42 HYPERBAR’s movement and all its internal elements are permanently immersed in a liquid developed from a specific high density oil. This very technical and particularly complex process enables this watch to withstand abyssal depths. A small air bubble is permanently present in the case as compensation.

A PATTON P42 HYPERBAR was tested in real-life diving conditions using one of the world’s largest hydrostatic pressure tanks. The P42H was immersed by the BREST-IROISE team of IFREMER engineers in a giant hyperbaric tank filled with water and locked with hydraulic cylinders in order to stand up to the incredible pressure simulating very great depths. The tank was computer operated from an adjoining room. The brand decided with the IFREMER engineers to increase the pressure by 10 bars per minute, i.e. 100 metres/m and to level out at 1000 metres for 10 minutes before decreasing the pressure at the same speed.

The verdict was revealed when the tank was opened: the PATTON P42H was brought up in perfect working condition, set as before its pressurisation down to the second. What is most incredible in this trial is the phenomenal force at these depths; at 1000 metres the pressure is 100 kg/cm2, representing over a tonne in weight pressing on the sapphire glass of our P42.

Through these trials in real-life conditions, Patton watch brand once again validated the design and manufacture of its P42H watches and bring you the reassurance of wearing one of the most watertight watches in the world.

Swiss watch brand DeWitt announces the “Grand Opening” of it’s first-ever flagship store in China

On June 30th, 2010, DeWitt celebrated in Beijing the opening of its first flagship store in the world in the impressive Legendale Hotel in presence of a large floor of VIP guests. The 190 square meter Boutique places the brand in one of the best and most strategic locations in the heart of the city. China being DeWitt’s number one key market, a corner in Dalian already opened in June and more boutiques are scheduled to rise shortly in Beijing and Shanghai to reinforce even more its positioning.
A fantastic celebration for a not less fantastic Boutique. The impressive exterior design of The Legendale Hotel reminds of the 17th century architecture of Southern Europe. As for the interior of the new DeWitt flagship store, it was specially designed to create a unique, neo-classical and impressive “imperial atmosphere”, yet extremely peaceful and welcoming. The brands universe is made of warm colors, which provides the perfect setting for a subtle mix between ancient historical watchmaking machines, Napoleon paintings and modern showcases with contemporary lighting. A fantastic contrast which creates the perfect ambiance to unveil the DeWitt masterpieces, different and exclusive.
The ceremony was followed by a cocktail with models performance and an original, living presentation of the four characters of DeWitt’s 2010 advertising campaign. Indeed, actors had been hired for that occasion, dressed in costumes and wearing accessories just like in the campaign. This first part was then followed by a classy dinner hosted by the well-know Chef Brian McKenna from the trendy restaurant “The ROOM”. Guests enjoyed an audacious fusion cuisine while listening to live jazz.

This Boutique gives to the brand a extraordinary opportunity to be closer to its Chinese clientele. The priority is to listen to them, to understand their lifestyle and to decode their perception of luxury in order to better serve them. It is only with this very special and unique relationship that DeWitt can answer the demands of its clients. Beauty, technique, tradition and art are all essential ingredients in the creation of a DeWitt watch.

This project could not have been realised without the fantastic commitment and hard work of its partner and exclusive distributor in China, Sparkle Roll Group Limited.

MCT Sequential One All Black Limited Edition

Swiss Luxury watch brand MCT( Manufacture Contemporaine du Temps) has just launched Sequential One All Black, a stunning new version of the amazing Sequential One. More complicated than a tourbillon with its 471 individual components and with a worlds first display system, MCT’s original timepiece is now available in a very limited All Black edition. Creator Denis Giguet, announced that only 20 of these extremely limited pieces will be available worldwide per year. The first ten pieces for 2010 have already been pre-sold. MCT manufactures only fifty timepieces each year.
The idea behind this particular version was an All Black treatment, so popular amongst collectors worldwide. The 18 karat gold, 41 part case, is coated with DLC (diamond like carbon) to achieve a truly deep black. MCT’s unique deployant buckle crafted in gold in its natural color receives the black DLC coating to the logo. The prisms are coated in a special dark treatment to better show off the huge white hour numerals and the signature MCT single red Minutes hand.

The MCT bespoke movement, visible through the sapphire crystal case back, is also coated with black DLC, putting real emphasis on the striking gold screw balance, oscillating assembly, and hour wheel. A Straumann double hairspring balance and a total of 81 jewels make up the formidable design. There are 3 patents pending related to the instantaneous rotation of the minutes disk and the system for energy storage which makes a 40 hour power reserve possible.

Giguet’s hand-wound mechanical movement is totally assembled at MCT in Geneva. The in-house watchmakers are under Denis’s watchful eye as he passes on his immense technical expertise. It’s important to fully appreciate the significance of an in-house designed and assembled movement as it is rare that companies design such complex masterpieces themselves, preferring instead to outsource this task.

External suppliers in Switzerland machine the parts to an MCT design and all assembly and quality-control testing is performed in-house by Denis and MCT’s own team of watchmakers led by Master watch-maker Jérome Marcu. MCT customers can rest east knowing that all servicing and after sales will be conducted in-house by Jerôme and his highly trained team.

Piaget Limelight City Boutique Exclusive Timepiece

Its vintage spirit lends it unique character and its shapes anchor it firmly un a chic urban atmosphere while remaining firmly rooted in the traditions of an incomparable signature: that of the Manufacture de Haute Horlogerie Piaget. Inspired by an historical Piaget model from the early 1960s - equipped at the time with Piaget Calibre 12P-, the new Limelight City is a contemporary expression of an original historical design. A shape inside a shape, an oval within a cushion-type case forming a structured timepiece expressing a resolutely active urban nature.

A concentrated blend of aesthetic elegance and refined finishing, this model strikes the perfect balance between tradition and modernity, strength and gentleness, powerful architecture and gentle shapes, subtle geometry and perfect curves. Available in white or pink gold versions, it features an elegant silver-coloured dial enhanced by tapering gold hour-markers set with diamonds. The oval dial is highlighted by a slender minute track and further accentuated by a bezel set with 60 brilliant-cut diamonds.

The white or pink gold case houses Manufacture Piaget Calibre 524P. This mechanical self-winding movement is visible through the cambered sapphire crystal case-back and reveals dedicated fine watchmaking finishes including circular-grained plate and bevelled bridges. The decorative elements such as the circular Côtes de Genève screws are in harmony with the brand’s signature codes.
Available on a hand-stitched leather strap in a choice of several colours, the new white or pink gold Limelight City versions are the first models in a new collection available exclusively from Piaget boutiques.

Bell & Ross VINTAGE Collection: VINTAGE ORIGINAL & VINTAGE HERITAGE

Bell & Ross has designed the VINTAGE COLLECTION as an homage to the aviators of the 1940’s who were the first professionals to use the wristwatch as a tool on their missions.

Every line in the VINTAGE COLLECTION is unique but all VINTAGE watches share the same inspiration, shape and movements. The traditional shape of the round case is reminiscent of wristwatches of yesteryear while its ergonomics provide the comfort modern day wearers have come to expect. The domed crystal recalls the crystals of the time period. Unlike the original 1940’s wristwatches, it is produced using extremely strong sapphire thanks to improved manufacturing techniques. The refined dial graphics optimize readability, taking their inspiration from cockpit instruments. A choice of two high quality Swiss movements: an automatic hours, minutes and seconds version (BR 123) and a chronograph version (BR 126).

The VINTAGE ORIGINAL line
The VINTAGE ORIGINAL models are re-editions of watches worn by aviators in the 1940’s; a modern version that conjures the essence of the original models. The case is satin-finish steel while each of the two dial colors evokes the style of the era:

BLACK DIAL: What strikes you immediately is the extreme readability of the model’s white hands and index that are in direct contrast to the black dial, similar to an aviation instrument. The dial adheres to one of Bell & Ross’ core principles- readability. With its matte leather strap, this classic watch is a timeless and discretely elegant basic which can be worn on any occasion.
Technical details

- Vintage BR 126: Hours, minutes and seconds. Date. Two-counter chronograph (60-second and 30-minute).

Dial: Black. Numerals, index and hands covered in photoluminescent coating.

BEIGE DIAL: In this model, the vintage spirit is abundant with the beige dial and hands reminiscent of the uniforms of World War II pilots. The black numerals and index contrasting with the beige of the dial make for perfect readability. The brown leather strap works in harmony with the tones of the watch face. A connoisseur’s model of restraint and originality that is soon to become a legend.

The VINTAGE HERITAGE line
Bell & Ross has created the VINTAGE HERITAGE models by combining in one watch the authenticity of period watches with the principle of readability exemplified by an aircraft instrument panel.
• The matte black, anti-reflection finish of the case is identical to aircraft instrument panels.
• The beige color of the hands, index and numerals is reminiscent of the distinctive coloring of period watches.
• The natural leather strap, similar to antique watches, acquires a characteristic patina with time.
