Oris Big Crown X1 Calculator

Swiss watch maker Oris presents Big Crown X1 Calculator, a brand new timepiece inspired by the famous Bell X1 Supersonic plane, which on 14th October 1947 undertook the first manned supersonic flight, breaking the sound barrier and entering the history books. The stunning new Oris Big Crown X1 timepiece is a direct homage to this incredible aviation milestone, featuring historically accurate ‘slide rule’ detailing and 3 bar water-resistance as standard.
The Bell X1 pilots undertook their amazing feat in an age before computers and pocket calculators, relying on the specially designed ‘slide rule’ for all engineering calculations. In honour of these pilots, Oris have included a circular version of the slide rule as part of the intrinsic design of the Big Crown X1 Calculator.

The watch’s case also has a gun metal coloured PVD coating to mirror the copper colour of the Bell X-1 plane, and in a further nod to its namesake, the re-set pusher of the chronograph is marked with an “X” and the start stop pusher is marked with a “I”.
Although it is a faithful tribute to the history of aviation, the Oris Big Crown X1 Calculator with its clear cut, instrumental design, provides all the necessary and relevant data for every pilot’s needs – even with today’s computerized aviation systems. For example, calculation of fuel consumption with the slide rule as given below.

Oris have produced a long and distinguished line of pilot’s watches and the new Big Crown X1 Calculator is sure to prove a timeless edition to the illustrious collection. Recommended retail price is CHF 3’350.
Oris Big Crown X1 Calculator comes in a box set which includes an Oris certificate, a handy leaflet, explaining the different functions of the slide rule, as well as a DVD of the movie The Right Stuff. The Warner Bros Movie, directed by Philip Kaufmann, covers the breaking of the sound barrier with the Bell X1.

Saint Honore Worldcode Automatic

Sleek design, meticulous finish, tempered steel middle…together they have established the exclusive character of the Worldcode watch, launched in 2010 for the brand’s 125th anniversary. The Worldcode is the most masculine symbol of the SAINT HONORE range and a watch of exquisitely harmonious design. The new Automatic version has the added prestige of a mechanical movement with exceptional fundamental qualities.

With subtly contrasting tones and polished and brushed steel finishes, the Worldcode Automatic recaptures the watchmaking codes of the Chronograph model with power and virility: 41 mm round case; steel bezel finished in shades of brushed steel, titanium, pink or yellow gold; black or white dials, clous de Paris motif or “carbon” dials for a sportier touch; superbly streamlined metal bracelet.

The Automatic version’s unique bezel has cleaner, more modern lines. The Roman numerals found on the Chronograph version give way to a bezel marked only with 12 indexes, with a double at 12 o’clock.

Following in the footsteps of the well-loved Chronograph, the new Worldcode Automatic reveals its sophistication and technical prowess through a transparent, screw-down case back which lets an automatic ETA 2824 movement, signed SAINT HONORE, show through beautifully: côtes de Genève décor, oscillating weight gilded in black gold. It is clear that a watch so rife with character will hold strong appeal for men who love sleek elegance and the most striking possessions.

Arnold & Son TE8 Tourbillon Limited Edition

At Basel world 2011, luxury watch brand Arnold & Son unveils the new TE8 Tourbillon, a grand complication timepiece powered with the hand-finished A&S8000 calibre. A true example of English watchmaking heritage, this defining timepiece will herald a brand new collection that will combine classic styling with innovative technology.
The tourbillon movement, one of the most elegant complications in the world of horology, has played a crucial role in Arnold & Son’s history. An exceptional watchmaker, Sir John Arnold was an active participant in one of the most extraordinary partnership in the world of innovative horology. Indeed, both he and A-L Breguet worked closely, sharing both their knowledge and passion. Evidence of their partnership is Breguet’s first ever tourbillon mounted in John Arnold’s No. 11 movement, a watch that can be found today in London’s British Museum.

Esthetically what sets Arnold & Son’s new Tourbillon TE8 apart is its unique “English” design: the dial is a ¾ wave-form cut-out on the barrel bridge, the tourbillon and motion-work bridges are triangular, and even the three-spoke wheels are shaped with a distinctive flare. This same threespoke design can also be found in the tourbillon cage as well. The chiseled decoration, reminiscent of waves, is a nod to the nautical world and to history’s great seamen and explorers such as James Cook, who entrusted their lives and that of their men to John Arnold’s timepieces.

When compared to more conventional tourbillons found today, the TE8 model is said to be “inverted”, that is to say most technical elements and visually interesting features are shown on the dial side, when those would normally be hidden on the reverse of the dial. Other typically English technical idiosyncrasies will seduce even the most demanding watch connoisseurs. Take, for instance, the symmetrical layout of the movement; to achieve such a feat requires overcoming a number of technical challenges. Thus the barrel spring and the tourbillon cage are centered along the watch’s longitudinal axis. When examining the winding system, one notes the traditional construction, which uses wheels with long and narrow spokes known as wolf’s teeth, used to improve the smoothness of the overall movement.
It goes without saying that every finishing touch on this striking piece, such as black and brushed polishes, angling and movement decoration, has been done by hand by Arnold & Son’s master watchmakers, thus bringing more brilliance and depth to each decorative element. This unique timepiece will be produced in a limited edition of 25 pieces of each version, in a 44mm 4N rose gold case with either a black ruthenium or a 4N rose gold movement, individually numbered and engraved. Market introduction is scheduled for April 2011.

Blacksand Genève Uniformity

Uniformity by Blacksand Genève is a new contemporary timepiece at the crossroads between pristine watchmaking traditions and a minimalist style that reveals its full potential through powerful aesthetic references. This timepiece represents a new trend resolutely geared towards thoroughbred authenticity.

Immediately recognizable with its urbane yet sporty appearance, the Uniformity model asserts itself through the curves that reveal a case framed by two sand-blasted matt ceramic shafts that shape the lugs while accentuating the combination of materials.

Expressing total harmony, these geometrical proportions are the Blacksand style signature and house a finely crafted movement that is certified by the COSC and by Chronofiable. The open caseback, protected by a sapphire crystal, beckons the eye to appreciate the authenticity in motion of a self-winding twin-barrel movement beating steadily at the pace of 28,800 vibrations per hour throughout its 120-hour power-reserve.

The hour, minute, seconds and date functions are displayed on an elegant dial, featuring hands, numerals and hour-markers that brighten up the dark night with a shimmering opaline blue glint, ensuring maximum readability and visual magic.

Uniformity offers a fascinating demonstration of aesthetic differentiation, bringing to the stage the authentic spirit of the Blacksand brand that combines traditional know-how with an unequivocally contemporary approach conjugating both tenses: a modern present and a classic future.

The case measuring 46 mm in diameter with a 23 mm interlug width is available in grade 5 titanium, tantalum, 5N gold or sand-blasted matt ceramic. The screw-in open caseback is constituted of a threaded ring in order to keep the engravings firmly in the correct position and sapphire crystal featuring an invisible marking revealed under heat. The screw-down crown with its matt ceramic insert and cap guarantees water-resistant up to 100 metres.

The two-level dial with its opaline base and straight satin-brushed upper plate is available in black, black gold or white, with a choice of rhodium treated hour-markers with blue-emission Superluminova or Arabic numerals made of composite Superluminova in high relief. Hands with original Blacksand identity codes: satin-brushed or polished and coated with a matt varnish according to the “épargne” protective process. Harry Winston Histoire de Tourbillon 2 Limited Edition

Launched in 2009, the Histoire de Tourbillon collection comprises of rare horological masterpieces which embody Harry Winston’s visionary spirit and determination to explore new dimensions. The Histoire de Tourbillon 1 was the first model and the entire collection combines technical sophistication and fine design in a daring and distinctive manner, expressing an original vision of horological history and asserting a new signature style.

This year, for its second edition, the House of Harry Winston is paying tribute to the undisputed star of complications with an exclusive new timepiece issued in a 20-piece limited series. Featuring an ingenious construction that makes light of established conventions and includes a bi-axial flying tourbillon, Histoire de Tourbillon 2 offers its very own interpretation of time measurement. An avant-garde interpretation in which technology serves design and confirms the pioneering spirit of Harry Winston.

In tune with the inimitable Harry Winston style, Histoire de Tourbillon 2 transforms creative freedom into a full-fledged vocation. The brand’s signature excentered look is expressed in a resolutely atypical manner that pushes the boundaries of conception and design. From the tourbillon coupled with running seconds at 9 o’clock, to the hours with day/night indication at 2 o’clock and the minutes at 6 o’clock, all the displays are isolated in independent offset subdials.

Each has its own field of expression in a case that is cleverly partitioned to form several different levels. Eight sapphire crystals (five on the dial side of which three for the time indications, and three on the case-back) punctuate the case like windows to a futuristic world in which technology forges the passing of time. The strength and intensity emanating from the watch are reinforced by a monumental white gold structure measuring 48.5 mm in diameter.

Powered by a mechanical hand-wound movement exclusively developed for Harry Winston, Histoire de Tourbillon 2 showcases the supreme complication in a setting worthy of its stature. The intricate structure of the amazing bi-axial flying tourbillon immediately catches the eye. Embodying a daunting conceptual challenge characterized by the absence of an upper bridge, the tourbillon is held on the side of the movement only, so that its point of fixation remains invisible.

Suspended in mid-air, it radiates the hypnotic magic of a perfectly controlled balancing game: as if released from the mechanism driving it, it appears to be floating in complete freedom. Hovering over the watch protected by its sapphire crystal dome, this watchmaking feat plays its role within a spacious and spectacular stage-setting. Designers have worked with perspective, height and sloping angles in creating the stunning tourbillon carriage with its fascinating sense of depth.

The technical complexity does not stop there: the bi-axial flying tourbillon combines two concentric carriages and gains added precision by enabling the regulating organ to perform multidimensional rotations. The striking visual effect is created by an outer carriage completing one full turn in 120 seconds and housing an internal carriage – holding the balance, balance-spring and escapement – that revolves in just 40 seconds.

The circular-grained, polished and shotpeened finishes, hand-crafted in keeping with the noblest fine watchmaking traditions, highlight the tourbillon components in an extraordinary contrast between light and dark shades. Moreover, behind the stunning vision of this aerial ballet lies excellent rating precision, enhanced not only by the constant shifting of positions, but also by the lightness and resistance of the external titanium carriage.

Distinguished by a three-level bezel, in itself an outstanding accomplishment in terms of guaranteeing water resistance, the case meticulously compartmentalizes the various timekeeping indications. While the tourbillon plays the starring role, the hours and minutes appear in their respective subdials at 2 and 6 o’clock and feature a bold, ultra-contemporary design. Underscored by a beveled inner bezel ring, they are swept over by orange-accented hands standing out clearly against the opaline black dial background.

Further enhancing readability, the day/night indications can be told apart by their color: orange for day, and blue for night. Finally, two additional dial apertures set the finishing touch to the decidedly masculine aesthetic of this model with a straight-line guilloché motif. Superlative design meets cutting-edge technology in this supremely elegant model radiating perfect visual equilibrium despite the excentered displays.

Designed for devotees of contemporary Haute Horlogerie that is firmly anchored in the 21st century and geared towards innovation, Histoire de Tourbillon 2 asserts a unique style: that of a precious work of art to be experienced on a daily basis; and that of a high-tech instrument that does not merely measure time, but actually lives it with vibrant energy and confidence.

Fitzroy Watches : Brand Info

Fitzroy is an independent, innovative new watch brand which takes London's indomitably cool arts world spirit as its inspiration. The founders of the brand has been inspired by the vibrant, multi-‐cultural life of modern artistic London, where creative sparks from across the globe meet, mix and flourish in an atmosphere of endless possibility, from which exciting new musicians, fashion designers, artists and industrial talents continually emerge.

Fitzroy has a noble and ancient name yet its approach is thoroughly modern. Every model encloses a good Swiss automatic movement but its quirky, individual, modern and yet classic look is unmistakably British. It has all the heritage and hand-‐crafted care one would expect of the best-‐made watches yet this particular quality product transcends old-‐style age and social divisions and even the gender gap, reflecting a profound change in people's attitudes. Fitzroy is made for the man who dares to be different, who seeks a watch which has lasting and authentic value and which reflects his own personality and interests rather than the uniformity of generic products. It believes that this privilege should be available to anyone who appreciates an interesting watch and enjoys Fitzroy's striking design innovations.

Even the name has a slightly risqué panache that appeals to the brand's individualist clientele. Fitzroy comes originally from old Norman, meaning "son of the king". It was traditionally given to the natural sons of the English kings by their various mistresses and was first used for Henry VIII's son Henry Fitzroy, Duke of Richmond. These sons could not inherit but they often became wealthy and influential and the name still has an aristocratic resonance today. For the Fitzroy brand it reflects the bravado and expansionist confidence of this most famous of English monarchs, who first used the term. The double F logo, in ancient and modern script, captures an appropriate blend of traditional heritage and adventurous modernism.

The Fitzroy range could only have grown out of this uniquely British mix of ancient tradition and adventurous spirit, creating a fascinating contrast between timeless elegance and freethinking modernity. All the watches are a classic round shape, in a slightly elongated, oval case. All are stainless steel, with silver and non‐oxidising bronze to come.
At 43mm or 46mm, they are a bold modern size and yet elegantly streamlined. There are two basic models, a chronograph and an automatic with small seconds dial - but over a hundred variants, so each owner feels his watch is individual to his own personality. And if that is not enough, special customisation will be possible in areas like hands, sub-‐dials and crowns. Under the brand name, the range will grow into a collection of accessories which will offer an accompaniment to a design-‐driven life with both style and substance. Already, each watch comes in a stylish black leather carrying case lined in purple Alcantara - a multifunctional item which reflects Fitzroy's commitment to making useful products of lasting value.

Fitzroy watches have a myriad personalities of their own. Some are elegantly traditional; others, with an off- centre double stripe down strap or bracelet, reminiscent of vintage racing car livery, have an effortlessly sporty appeal. A plain steel model with a white dial and black hands and numbers, on a bracelet or a black leather strap, is the most classic. But even here the brand's innovative approach shows through in the signature, modern geometric figures alternating with baton indices. And every model has a specially invented strap-change mechanism for an easy swap over from leather to fabric or bracelet. Other materials are more innovative, and the colour which helps define the brand sneaks in black steel as a case or a whole bracelet, Fitzroy's signature green anodised aluminium used on pushers or bracelet stripes.

Fitzroy's customer wears colour confidently. A regal purple and that soft moss green are the chosen shades, in various combinations of hands and logo on black or white dials, or on straps with contrast stitching or stripes. There are also more traditional crocodile effect, wildlife-friendly leather straps (respecting the environment is an essential brand value), at first in black or brown but also leading this primarily masculine brand into a new area, with unquestionably feminine shades of white and denim blue. There are also delicious sprinklings of diamonds asa subtle bezel ring, with a few more stones on the dial or the full pavé case works. If the Fitzroy man has confidence in his individuality and style, the woman who dares to wear the brand is at least his match.

Fitzroy may have its roots in history and tradition but it looks set for a bright future in today's modern world.

Chopard L.U.C XP Tonneau

Chopard’s L.U.C collection welcomes a refined model that combines technical qualities and aesthetic virtues. Born at the heart of Watch Valley within Chopard Manufacture in Fleurier, the L.U.C XP Tonneau model, an ultra-thin interpretation of the tonneau or barrel-shaped model, now appears with a particularly distinguished new look. The pared-down dial now features Arabic numerals. The new, slender case gives this watch a modern appearance, while maintaining a touch of tradition that has created the destiny of Haute Horlogerie.

The L.U.C XP Tonneau displays the hours, minutes, small seconds, and the date shown through a window at 6 o’clock. All these functions are driven by the ultra-thin, self-winding L.U.C. Calibre 3.97. Chronometer-certified by the COSC, a reliable Institute of quality and reliability, the movement follows the contours of the case housing it – a rare distinctive feature matching the demands of Haute Horlogerie. The L.U.C 3.97 proprietary movement can be admired through the sapphire crystal case. The slender, slightly curving case makes a perfect fit on the wrist and is available in 18-carat rose or white gold with satin-brushed and polished finishing.

The sunburst silver dial carries the new signature features of models in the L.U.C collection: more elongated Dauphine appliques, Arabic numerals, an extremely fine sunburst satin-brushed finish centred around the word CHOPARD, and a minute track to enhance the high-precision image of these models. With the new IMPERIALE line, Chopard achieves the feat of enshrining the quintessence of style and elegance within a watch. For this reinterpretation of the brand’s famous 1990s model, the House designers have drawn inspiration from refined, dynamic and natural women with strong personalities who appreciate the discreet luxury of extremely beautiful objects.

Beneath its understated appearance, the IMPERIALE conceals a wealth of rare and precious details. Many of them, such as the typical lug covers, have been entirely redesigned. The splendours of the imperial age are expressed through this sculptural timepiece. The delicately engraved mother-of-pearl dial base evokes the embroidered cushions on which monarchs used to place their insignia. It is encircled by Roman numerals representing resolutely “imperial” symbols marking off the hours.

The finely curved hands are reminiscent of tapered daggers used by sovereigns in combat, while the lotus-shaped crown is fitted on a case middle with pure, uncluttered sides enhancing the ethereally light and luminous appeal of this model. In an ultimate touch of refinement, the lugs resembling antique columns are adorned with tiny amethyst briolette-cut cabochons for the rose gold versions and blue sapphires for the white gold models. The delicate royal purple shade of the stones echoes the colour of the transfers on the watch dial as well as the Chopard signature.

IMPERIALE radiates an aura of timeless chic embodying a subtle alliance between simplicity and majesty, sophistication and sensuality. Available in several sizes and equipped with a quartz, self-winding or chronograph movement, diamond-set or all-polished versions in steel or in rose or white gold, and fitted with a metal bracelet or leather strap, IMPERIALE thus appears in an infinite variety of interpretations appealing to the most demanding woman to accompany them on all occasions.

Hanhart Primus Collection Black ADLC (Edition 2011)

The new models in the Primus collection, which are being launched by Hanhart at Baselworld 2011, are distinguished by their pure, cool style. The Swiss- German watch brand has opted for an elegant black design for its Pilot, Racer and Diver chronographs.

Hanhart is known for its high-precision, 100% reliable and robust instrument watches for use in the air, on the land and on the sea. 2009 saw the Swiss- German watch brand launch with Primus, a collection of mechanical chronograph wristwatches which builds on the long standing tradition and expertise of the own-brand watch manufactory and combines this with the latest technology and progressive design. This year, the Pilot, Racer and Diver models are now being introduced with black ADLC-coated cases.

Reminders of the watch manufacturer’s tradition are deliberately made clearly recognisable on all three models in the Primus collection: one of the brand’s distinctive features, the red button, underlines the relationship between Hanhart’s first pilot’s chronographs, its mechanical stopwatches and the new collection. It has been a distinguishing characteristic of Hanhart watches since 1939 and was previously intended to prevent pilots from unintentionally resetting the stop time. For the models featured in the Primus collection it has been finished with anodised aluminium. The striking fluted bezel with inlaid red marking is also reminiscent of the design of the watch manufacturer’s legendary chronographs. On the Primus Diver, it was realised as a concave, unidirectional rotating bezel featuring a scale for calculating the dive time. It can be adjusted to an anticlockwise direction and has a detent set in steps of one minute. With its size and feel, even the crown harks back to the design of the early precision watches.

In order to ensure safety and ease of use for the measurement of time intervals or for air and water navigation, or when using a stopwatch to measure interval times and end times or distances on dry land, the first priority was to ensure maximum functionality, ease of use and outstanding reading precision. There was no need for unnecessary gimmicks or design features on the case and dial, and Hanhart continues, as always, to stand by this maxim. To ensure an accurate time display and precision chronometry, the models in the Primus collection are equipped with a Valjoux 7750 calibre modified to a bicompax display, featuring a rotor with a skeletonised Hanhart logo. This allows the small seconds to be clearly positioned at 9 o’clock and the 30-minute counter to be arranged at 3 o’clock – a configuration which Hanhart has customarily used from the very beginning. Perfect readability is guaranteed not least by the clear, generously proportioned design of the Arabic numerals, index marks, the minute-circle and the hands with Super-LumiNova® coating.
The solid, elegant and high-quality case made from black ADLC-coated stainless steel highlights the sporty, contemporary aesthetic of the Primus chronographs, while the flexibly screwed lugs, which can be moved across an angle of inclination of 45º to 50º, ensure optimum wearing comfort on all wrist sizes. The deep black dial is encased by a convex, internally anti-reflective sapphire glass, while a screwed-down sapphire glass case back allows the wearer to see the fascinating interplay of the movement and the rotor. The watches are finished off with a leather strap made from the finest calfskin with contrasting top-stitching or with a black strap made from vulcanised rubber with a moulded Hanhart logo and a practical, easily adjustable folding clasp, also made from black ADLC-coated stainless steel, with inlaid red marking.
