Montegrappa – Writing Instruments Collection Dedicated to Russia (Cosmopolitan Moscow, Cosmopolitan St Petersburg and Cosmopolitan Russia)

Following its entry into the sophisticated and challenging Russian luxury sector, Italian writing instrument brand has announced a new collection developed exclusively for that market. It is composed of three models that embody the country’s spirit through bas relief images, defined as Cosmopolitan Moscow, Cosmopolitan St Petersburg and Cosmopolitan Russia.

All pens in the Cosmopolitan families are produced in resin and silver or resin and gold and are available as fountain pens with piston filling system or as rollerballs. All fountain pens are fitted with nibs in 18K gold.
For the caps and bodies of the St Petersburg and Moscow pens, silver has been employed with low relief (basso-rilievo) engraving, featuring monuments and symbols of the two cities. The engravings of Moscow pen represent the University of the City on the cap and the famous St Basil’s Cathedral on the body. Topping each cap is the logo of the city being represented. St Petersburg trims are in pearl grey resin, while Moscow trims are made of red resin.

Cosmopolitan Russia has been fashioned with the fret-working technique that accentuates the contrast between the precious metal and the blue resin. On the cap, the Coat of Arms is engraved in low relief, while the meridians and parallels on the pen barrel are represented together with map of Russia. Its cap top is enamelled with a representation of the Russian flag.
Montegrappa will issue the “Cosmopolitan Russia” pens in the following quantities:
MOSCOW – 1147 pieces to represent the date of the first reference to Moscow, when Yuri Dolgorukiy called upon the prince of the Novgorod-Severski to “come to me, brother, to Moscow.” The silver version will comprise of 550 fountain pens and 550 rollerballs, with 47 gold fountain pens and 47 gold rollerballs completing the edition.

ST PETERSBURG – 1703 examples to denote the year in which Saint Petersburg was founded by Tsar Peter the Great. It will consist of 703 silver fountain pens and 1000 silver rollerballs, as well as 73 gold fountain pens and 73 gold rollerballs.

RUSSIA – 988 pens will represent the year of the Christianisation of Russia. The silver edition will consist of 900 fountain pens and 900 rollerballs, along with 88 gold fountain pens and 88 gold rollerballs.

Parmigiani Pershing “Zero-Zero-Two” Chronograph Collection

In 2008, Swiss luxury watch manufacture Parmigiani Fleurier introduced a new chronograph line to celebrate its exclusive partnership signed with Pershing, the Italian top-of-the-range yacht builder. Seen as Parmigiani Fleurier’s first highly sporty watch collection, the Pershing limited edition “one-one-five” chronograph, and then the Pershing “zero-zero-five” won over a broad international public, corroborating the good match between the two business cultures, based on values of excellence and expertise in manufacturing know-how.

The new Pershing “zero-zero-two” chronograph collection offers the advantage of matching the expectations of the broad public. Its compact size, with a 42 mm diameter, means that it can be worn by gentlemen, whose preferences will tend more to sobriety and classicism, but also by ladies.
Fully redesigned to achieve balanced lines, its case is made from steel, 18 carat white gold or rose gold. Its Calibre Parmigiani PF 334 in-house automatic movement offers chronograph indications (large seconds, 30 minute counter, 12 hour counter) combined with a large date display window. Its push-pieces are made from white or black rubber, depending on the wristlet colour, if the watch is steel; they are made from precious metal if the chronograph model is gold. Its unidirectional rotating bezel, 3-metre base tachometric measurement indicator and its 100 metre water resistance give it the ideal characteristics for a diving watch.
A highly feminine version Pershing “zero-zero-two” chronograph has been custom designed, with a number of alluring original details. In tribute to a more poetic maritime look, its blue mother-of-pearl dial reflects the ocean deeps, which is underlined via the presence of a small stylised octopus placed on the end of the chronograph hand. The small seconds is a starfish that turns to mark the seconds. The brilliance of the aquatic reflections is interpreted by precious diamond and sapphire baguettes set on its bezel.

There is a white Hermes Epsom calfskin strap, with blue stitching, for the mother-of-pearl version; and a steel bracelet or natural rubber strap for the more classic versions of the Pershing “zero-zero-two” chronograph with graphite, amaranth or silver dial.

DAVOSA Black Ternos Ceramic

Swiss watchmaker DAVOSA first issued its popular divers’ watch, the Ternos, in a completely black, 333-piece limited edition series in 2010. The watch sold out very fast. Two years after the first Black Ternos, DAVOSA is now issuing a non-limited and slightly different version of its black timepiece. Just like all the other models in the new Ternos range, the Black Ternos has an exceptionally robust ceramic bezel and a tough, stainless steel buckle.

DAVOSA Salome Limited Edition

Swiss watchmaker DAVOSA has named its latest skeleton model after the mythological historical figure of Salome – the most beautiful and seductive woman of her time. In keeping with this myth of ancient beauty, DAVOSA has employed stunning inner features such as golden gear wheels, blued screws and ruby red jewel bearings.
The watch’s outer features include a rounded case and equally subtle hands, designed not to detract from the embellished movement inside. The DAVOSA Salome is available in three limited edition versions of 333 apiece. With a real salmon leather strap in the colours sand, red and platinum, the DAVOSA Salome retails at 598 Euros.
The DAVOSA Salome is unusually large for a ladies’ watch. It measures a quite considerable 43 millimetres in diameter. The rationale behind the larger size is to make the skeleton movement more prominent than would have been the case in a smaller watch. Furthermore, this watch is designed as homage to the very first ladies’ watches from the start of the twentieth century that were nothing other than redesigned pocket watches that were worn on the wrist for the very first time. The unostentatious case and simple lugs of the DAVOSA Salome are a tribute to these early watches.
An additional special feature of the limited edition DAVOSA Salome: On the outer rim of the 43 mm case is engraved a number from 1 to 333. It further underscoring the individual sophistication that differentiates this watch and its wearer.

Jaquet Droz Pocket Watch Ivory Enamel

Swiss luxury watch brand Jaquet Droz is going back to the golden times of mechanical horology by unveiling the Pocket Watch Ivory Enamel. Back in 1785, Jaquet Droz conceived a pocket watch which would span the ages and would be the inspiring muse for the flagship model – the Grande Seconde.

The traditionally rich Swiss watch brand also pays homage to Pierre Jaquet-Droz, genius and driving force behind a creative spirit that will transcend the centuries and give life to a pocket watch from which The Pocket Watch Ivory Enamel naturally adopts the codes. This beautiful timepiece exemplifies a return to origins and has been designed to link the past with the future.
Embracing time by weaving links between the incredible treasures emerging in each period in history and between the richness of tradition and the elegance of the modern age: this is the nature of the new Pocket Watch Ivory Enamel by Jaquet Droz – an ambition orchestrated by outstanding expertise and the finest craftsmanship, with its ivory dial in Grand Feu enamel, its yellow gold case whose case back is covered by the brand secret signature: the cloverleaf, its delicately applied counters and its unique Guilloché decoration.
Hand engraved with the original Jaquet Droz signature and the individual number, The Pocket Watch Ivory Enamel, with its manual movement and 40 hour power reserve, pays tribute to a philosophy that has remained unchanged since the Age of Enlightenment.

RAYMOND WEIL nabucco Intenso 43mm

Swiss watch brand RAYMOND WEIL welcomes a new member to its flagship collection nabucco. The new model, nabucco Intenso embodies all the values of the RAYMOND WEIL’s prestigious collection of timepieces, inspired by Nabucco, the famous opera by Giuseppe Verdi. The nabucco Intenso comes in a much compact 43 mm case diameter rather than the 46 mm.

The case of nabucco Intenso is three millimeters smaller, but none the less imposing: powerful horns - but with rounded angles to sit comfortably on the wrist – and its perfectly balanced proportions, in satin-finished, steel and titanium.

The remaining features of the collection are equally distinctive: the tachymeter transfer on the bezel, the three counters at 3 o’clock (30 minutes), 6 o’clock (12 hours) and 9 o’clock (small seconds), the round date window at 4.30, the robust pushers and the single number 12. However, on this compact model, the phosphorescent number 12 becomes quite majestic and attracts the eye, which then takes in the detailed decoration on the black galvanic dial: the small steel-colored counters and the checkered inner background surrounded by concentric circles.

Finally, the blued steel of the chronograph hands contrasts effectively with the chiaroscuro decor. The case is mounted on a black, alligator-style, rubber strap, blending comfort with strength, in complete harmony with the collection.

If the UR-210 displays a cold chronometric precision in counting the hours, it plays the card of emotion when it echoed the tempo of your life: The UR-210 embodies the symbiotic relationship between man and his watch.

The dial of the UR-210 features a traditional power reserve indication at one o’clock. In a near mirror image at 11 o’clock we find a similar indication. No, it isn’t a duplicate fail-safe, but something much more important which deserves our full attention, because it is actually a world-first complication that indicates winding efficiency over the last two hours.
When you are comfortably nestled in your armchair, the indicator will be tending towards the red zone to tell you that your UR-210 is not being wound enough by its automatic rotor and is running on stored energy. However, if you are moving around energetically, the indicator will point towards the green zone, a sign that you are replenishing your watch with new energy. This entirely new indication does not measure mainspring torque, but calculates the difference between the consumed and generated energy of the mainspring.

Armed with knowledge of both winding efficiency and available power reserve, you are now able to intervene. If your UR-210 indicates an insufficient supply of energy, you can position the winding efficiency selector (at the back of the watch) to “FULL”.

The rotor will then convert the slightest movement into stored energy. In this configuration, a turbine connected to the rotor provides smooth, unimpeded power. But if you are more active, then that may provide more power than required and unnecessarily wear the mechanism. In that case, you would position the winding efficiency selector to “REDUCED” to engage the rotor damping system. An air turbine compressor mounted on ruby bearings spins and creates internal resistance – enough friction to slow down or dampen the automatic winding rotor. In “STOP” mode, the automatic winding system is disabled completely and the UR-210 runs off reserve power and may require manual winding.
Back to the dial side, the UR-210’s satellite complication with retrograde minute is both highly original and totally explosive. The principal feature is a high-tech, oversized, three-dimensional retrograde minute hand. Its function is to enclose the hour satellite and indicate the time as it transverses the 0-to-60-minute scale. This one-hour journey through time, tracing an arc of 120°, is smooth and fluid. But the true nature of the piece is revealed at the end of the 59th minute. Then a sharp distinct “click” signals the return of the minute hand to its starting point.

In less than 0.1 of a second the hand flies back to dock with the next hour satellite. This lightning fast retrograde system is based on three key elements:-
• A central axis set in ruby bearings provides excellent stability for the satellite/retrograde complication. A cylindrical marine chronometer type spring runs vertically around the axis and generates the optimal tension required for the retrograde minutes flyback.

• A minute hand, which also forms a frame for the hour satellites, displays the time in an extraordinary way. Milled from aluminum to exacting tolerances of approximately 3 microns, the whole structure has a total weight of just 0.302g and is counter balanced by a brass weight. This three-dimensional cage offers rigidity as it transfers energy from the cylindrical flyback spring in the top center of the carrousel to the double-star gear underneath.

• A double coaxial star-shaped cam regulates the retrograde mechanism through its gearing and its rotation defines the trajectory of the minute hand. When the minute hand reaches 60, the double star trips a (one of three) hockey-stick shaped spring under the mechanism, which liberates the minute to fly back to the next hour satellite at 0-minutes.

Nautische Instrumente Mühle- Glashütte: TCS-1 Ship's Master Clock

The SMM, the world's largest shipbuilding fair, took place in Hamburg from 04 to 07 September 2012. At the fair for Shipbuilding, Machinery, and Marine Technology Nautische Instrumente Mühle-Glashütte has presented its pioneering ships’ clocks, which are successfully following the course of ship automation.

With its innovative timekeeping and guidance solutions Nautische Instrumente Mühle-Glashütte offers an extensive portfolio for ship builders – from autarchic, quartz-powered marine chronometers for yachts to automated ships’ clocks that can be controlled centrally and economically with the TCS-1 time control system. At the SMM in Hamburg, the leading fair of the maritime industry, Mühle-Glashütte has introduced the innovative, Glashütte-made marine clock technology, further pursuing its goal of maintaining growth in this segment in the second half of 2012.

In the age of GPS and global networks, ships’ clocks are no longer required for navigation, instead, the availability of a standard time protocol for the central control and co-ordination of all automated ship systems is becoming increasingly significant. This is where the time control system TCS-1 from Nautische Instrumente Mühle-Glashütte, powered by alpha-bit, comes in. This innovative time control unit can not only be utilised as a master clock in an extensive clock unit, the TCS-1 also provides the time protocol for all integrated automation systems within a ship, thereby acting as the heartbeat of automation. For example, for a damage control system, which serves to alarm, display and monitor in the event of damage.

The TCS-1 defines the time point of the damage report as well as the beginning and conclusion of the damage control activity. This enables the damage control system to reliably sound the alarm if specific measures are not undertaken within the time period specified in the protocol.

Since 2011, the TCS-1 has been in use on numerous ships around the world, such as the Greenpeace Rainbow Warrior III, launched last October. In combination with 139 secondary clocks the TCS-1 also delivers the time on a cruise liner of the Norwegian Cruise Line, with a further ship of the fleet set to be equipped with the marine clock system this year.

With its intelligent 24-hour display the TCS-1 also fulfils the essential requirement that Mühle-Glashütte sets for every clock: optimal legibility. In this the analogue displays are equipped with interchanging hour numerals for Universal Time Coordinated and Local Time. In the morning the hour numerals 1 to 12 are displayed, from midday to midnight the hours 13 to 24.

This means that with the 24- hour display developed by Mühle one glance is enough to recognise if it is daytime or nighttime in the time zone displayed. For easier operation the TCS-1 is equipped with a night switch and contrasting and dimmable touch screen, because optimal legibility at night and in direct sunshine is one of the key requirements of the new master clock.

The TCS-1 receives the precise time via GPS signal or an accurate real-time clock, should no GPS signal be possible over an extended period of time. The TCS-1 can communicate the time to the secondary clocks either via the on-board ethernet or a RS485 data line. The configuration of the master clock is not performed via the touch screen, instead through a PC in the ethernet LAN - and is even possible with a smart phone or WLAN access point.

DAVOSA Ladies’ Colour Delight

Swiss watch brand DAVOSA has injected a palette of fresh new summer colours into its Ladies’ Delight range. The models are now available with stylish leather straps in colours such as bright white, dramatic red, charcoal and sky blue. As well as a version with a white rubber strap for the sportswoman.

For those seeking the ultimate in sophistication, the Ladies’ Colour Delight is also available with a diamond setting. All the models have one thing in common: A dial of shimmering mother of pearl, a natural product that turns each of these watches into a unique work of art. The Ladies’ Colour Delight range is available from specialist retailers starting from 548 euros. The 74 diamond version retails at 1,498 euros.

Iridescence is the optical phenomenon that describes the lustre of mother of pearl, which shimmers in many different colours and ways depending on how the light falls. This enticing effect is produced by thin layers of shell that are deposited on the inside of a mollusc. Pearls are produced in much the same way. The superimposed layers break and reflect the light differently, creating the colour spectrum that we know from rainbows. After all, the term ‘iridescence’ derives from ‘iris’, the Greek word for rainbow.

DAVOSA uses a wafer-thin mother of pearl layer applied on a white background to make the dials of its Ladies’ Colour Delight range radiate so brightly. Another high-quality, natural product employed in this range is the lizard skin leather straps that derive from controlled breeding and ensure a comfortable feeling on the wrist.

Ladies’ Colour Delight is equipped with a precise Swiss movement decorated with Geneva stripes, the details of which can be admired through the glass back. The automatic quality movement is an ETA 2824-2 with rotor embellishment.

Bell & Ross - PW1 Répétition Minutes (Pocket watch) & WW1 ARGENTIUM®

In 2011, Bell & Ross introduced the PW1 (Pocket Watch 1) and its development into a wristwatch, the Vintage WW1 (Wrist Watch 1). These creations were inspired from the first wristwatches worn during the First World War. This year, the traditional Swiss watch brand continues this saga by unveiling the PW1 & WW1 ARGENTIUM® models, thus reviving the spirit of the early watches which influenced history and pays a heart-felt tribute to the past through its creations. The PW1 and WW1 ARGENTIUM® are a fantastic illustration of the unique parallel between the history of aviation and that of watch-making.

With the PW1 and WW1 ARGENTIUM®, Bell & Ross preserves the magic of vintage timepieces and sublimates them using the most innovative watch-making techniques: by using a new oxidation-resistant alloy, Argentium®, the pioneering watchmaker is reviving a forgotten metal. Inimitable colour, magnificent luster and unique depth: the PW1 and WW1 ARGENTIUM ® are suffused with all the nobility of silver.

The PW1 Répétition Minutes (Pocket watch)
Alongside the Tourbillon and perpetual calendar, the Répétition Minutes (Minute Repeater) is one of the three finest complications in watchmaking, a masterpiece of excellence and expertise demanding complete mastery of the art of watch-making. With the creation of the PW1 Répétition Minutes, Bell & Ross reinterprets the pocket watch, imbuing it with poetry.
A symbol of Bell & Ross’s expertise, the PW1 Répétition Minutes marks time like the clocks of the past: the hour is not read, it is heard. The purity of the melody which resonates through its high quality silver case is a pleasure to the senses. A timepiece with a complicated mechanism, it indicates the hours and minutes musically on request. A low-pitched sound is emitted for each hour, followed by a series of double low-pitched and high-pitched sounds for every five minutes elapsed. The complication is activated by pressing the button on the left-hand side of the case. In a subtle choreography, the perfectly orchestrated hammers of the additional module strike the bells of proper caliber. The vibration of these intricate parts made up of thin steel wires produces a gentle melody. The PW1 Répétition Minutes was designed in the tradition of period watches: a manual winding mechanism, a silver case and chain and a domed crystal and dial. The «barleycorn» guilloché caseback opens to reveal the ingenious mechanism. With this exceptional model, Bell & Ross offers connoisseurs and collectors a real journey back in time.

Created from a unique silver alloy, the WW1 ARGENTIUM® models perfectly reflect the high-quality allure of the early wristwatches. An exercise in style mastered by Bell & Ross, which in these two models demonstrates the perfect refinement of its art. These two versions retain the characteristics specific to the WW1 collection:-
  • The finish of the hands and index in appliqué metal give the model a timeless refinement.
  • The domed glass gives the watch a vintage look. Unlike the original, it is made from sapphire, a hard-wearing material, using perfected techniques.
  • Designed in the finest watch-making tradition, the manual winding movement offers a journey back to the very roots of watch-making.
  • The horns are produced like wire handles soldered to the case. The elegance of the straps harks back to the first wristwatches while being ergonomically perfect.
They stand out from the other models in the WW1 45 mm collection by their smaller diameter (41 mm), the unique luster of their silver case and their finish:-
  • The sunburst dial of the silver version shimmers with opalescent reflections, blending subtly with the silver of the case to create a marvelous harmony. The hands, numerals and index marks present an elegantly sober tone-on-tone display.
  • In the Ruthénium version, the deep-gray sunburst dial perfectly matches the colour of the strap to create a refined contrast with the silver of the case.
