Arnold & Son TE8 Métiers d’Art I Limited Edition

Swiss luxury watch brand Arnold & Son unveils the TE8 Métiers d’Art I, the new limited edition collection inspired by the pocket watches made during the earlier part of John Arnold’s life for King George III and the royal court. Limited to only eight exclusive timepieces, the latest addition to the Arnold & Son Royal Collection is an eloquent expression of elegance and sophistication in the inimitable English style and demonstrates the brand’s traditional prowess in the classical decorative arts.
The tourbillon, one of the most elegant complications in the world of horology, has played a crucial role in Arnold & Son’s history. An exceptional watchmaker, John Arnold was an active participant in one of the most extraordinary partnerships in the world of innovative horology. Indeed, both he and A.-L. Breguet worked closely, sharing both their knowledge and passion. Evidence of their partnership is A.-L. Breguet’s first ever tourbillon mounted in John Arnold’s No. 11 movement, a watch that can be found today in London’s British Museum.

What sets Arnold & Son’s new Tourbillon TE8 aesthetically and technically apart is its unique “English” design: the barrel bridge has a ¾ wave-shape, the tourbillon and motion-work bridges are triangular, and even the wheels are shaped with a distinctive three-spoke design. This same design cue can also be found on the tourbillon cage and the barrel bridge as well.
When compared to more conventional tourbillons found today, the TE8 model is said to be “inverted”, that is to say most technical elements and visually interesting features are shown on the dial side, when those would normally be hidden on the reverse of the dial. Other typically English technical idiosyncrasies will seduce even the most demanding watch connoisseurs. Take, for instance, the symmetrical layout of the movement; to achieve such a feat requires overcoming a number of technical challenges. Thus the barrel spring and the tourbillon cage are centered along the watch’s longitudinal axis. When examining the winding system and the gear train, one notes the traditional construction, which uses wheels with long and narrow spokes known as wolf’s teeth, used to improve the smoothness of the overall movement.
Each single TE8 Métiers d’Art I is hand-engraved by Arnold & Son’s own master engraver, who went as far as to create a new engraving pattern solely for this special edition. This new pattern is composed of complex geometrical elements arising from the center of the movement. The engraving of this masterpiece is particularly painstaking as the movement is made of German silver and not usual brass. Due to the hardness of German silver, the engraver must pay great attention not to slip off and constantly sharpen his tools, as their wear and tear is very high.
Hand-engraving is a traditional art form that involves the use of hardened steel tools called bur ins in combination with other special tools. These create cuts, lines and texturing that build up entire images or, as in the case of the TE8 Métiers d’Art I, a beautiful hand-engraved pattern on the barrel bridge and on the back of the main plate, bringing a breathtaking richness of detail to an already exceptional tourbillion timepiece.

It goes without saying that every finishing touch on this striking piece has been done by hand by Arnold & Son’s master watchmakers, thus fulfilling the highest standards of Haute Horlogerie finish and bringing more brilliance and depth to each element of the movement.
This unique timepiece measures 44 mm in diameter in its classically elegant 18-carat rose gold case. It will be produced in a limited edition of only 8 timepieces, with each case individually hand-numbered by the company’s master engraver.

Christopher Ward C900 Worldtimer

British luxury watch brand Christopher Ward unveils a brand new world timer timepiece in association with celebrated watchmaker Johannes Jahnke. The C900 Worldtimer combines innovation with unprecedented clarity, creating a dual time-zone watch that sets a completely new standard of readability and ease of use.

Johannes Jahnke  has developed the Calibre JJ03 is based on an ETA 2893 base movement with a complication that, by engineering the gearing system to enable both the ‘local’ hand and the GMT hand to rotate at the same speed, makes the dial extremely easy to read.  The two hands use the same 24-hour scale instead of the traditional approach (whereby one using the 12-hour scale and the other the 24-hour one) and this innovation combines the C900 Worldtimer’s unique design with unrivalled clarity of use.
In a further innovation, the C900 Worldtimer uses a window at 12 O’clock as a ‘location reminder’ – displaying the selected 3-letter airport code appropriate to the chosen timezone.  By simply setting one hand to local time and, via the central crown, setting the second to the chosen global destination, the two times are easily read.  By using the window to display the selected location, the C900 Worldtimer neatly avoids the often-confusing clutter caused by the squeezing of 24 locations onto the face of traditional worldtimers.  Instead, the watch’s 24 timezone locations are listed in time sequence on the back-plate, using the zone-appropriate 3-letter airport code and city name, while the beautifully modified ETA 2893 can be observed through the 25.6mm crystal window.

For what is a very visually compelling watch, Christopher Ward’s Maidenhead-based design team has created a hugely detailed, multilayered dial with an exquisitely criss-crossed ‘dimple’ base.  Overlaying this is the familiar silhouette of the world map, with raised meridians of longitude and latitude. A final elegant and creative visual touch is added by the use of a red dot on the map to indicate the selected city location – another patent-pending feature of this unique watch.

The deep blue tone of the dial – representing the oceans – is perfectly complemented by the ethically sourced, luxuriously comfortable, Louisiana alligator strap in midnight blue. Finally, the C900 Worldtimer also carries another Christopher Ward innovation; the new, highly innovative and patent-pending Bader deployment buckle. Named after Jörg Bader, the head of Christopher Ward’s Swiss operation who created it, this high-grade clasp is smaller, neater and much less complicated than the ubiquitous butterfly clasp. Price: £1575.

Longines Avigation Oversize Crown

Swiss luxury watch brand Longines pays the tribute to its rich aviation history by unveiling Avigation Oversize Crown, an elegantly crafted multifunctional aviation watch based on a Longines model produced in the 1920s.

The ideal accessory for today’s aviators , with its 41 mm diameter, its black dial featuring white numerals and gold-plated, luminous, pear-shaped hands it is extremely easy to read in the semi-darkness of the cockpit. Each piece in this new line is numbered.

The bezel is also marked with a single index and can be turned in both directions, enabling the pilot to set his reference points. Thanks to the fluted decoration around the bezel, it can be manipulated with great precision. And as for the oversize crown and winding stem, which stand away from the case, they enable a pilot wearing gloves good access to the bezel without coming into contact with the crown. In the original model, this bezel enabled the pilots to record time data when chronographs were still rare, as well as to record the times of important events when they were on a mission or, then and now, times of meetings.
While The Longines Avigation Oversize Crown has retained the basic design of the original model, it is fitted with a mechanical, self-winding movement and available in three stainless steel versions. The basic version shows the hours, minutes and seconds, while an alternative model has a second time-zone and the third is a single push-piece chronograph fitted with Longines’ exclusive column-wheel chronograph movement (L788).

Saint-Honoré Lutecia Collection

An Open Dial automatic or quartz chronograph, “Lutecia” for men is characterised by its “cushion” shape, particularly daring in its steel case with matching brown leather strap.

In the chronograph version, “Lutécia” sports a 42mm steel case, water-resistant to 5 bars, with a pink PVD steel bezel. Its silver-white dial is illuminated by appliqué oversized Roman numerals and has 3 windows (60 seconds, 30 minutes and 12 hours) with date at 4 o’clock.

In the Open Dial automatic version, Lutecia” sports a 41 mm steel case, with a pink or two-tone PVD finish (steel and pink PVD) water-resistant to 5 bars. The copper coloured dial draws the eye: the silver cut-out Roman numerals form a unique “skeleton” piece which seems to float above the base. Almost transparent, this graphic construction reveals at its heart the date disk and the “Open Dial” movement. The “sword” style hands highlight the exclusive nature of this model.

“Lutecia Dame”, simultaneously traditional and contemporary, sober and stylised, brilliantly incarnates French elegance. Its “cushion” case (35mm) in pink PVD steel houses a white mother-of-pearl dial with pink gold appliqué Roman numerals. The “cushion” shape of the case is reiterated at the centre of the dial by a similar shape.

Other details add to the charm of this model: a black onyx cabochon on the crown and the crocodile-style brown leather strap. “Lutecia Dame” is available in steel, yellow gold, pink gold or two-tone.

Featured models
1.  “Lutecia Automatic Open Dial”: Pink gold PVD finish steel case, anti-glare sapphire crystal, open dial, silver Roman numerals, “sword” hands, brown leather strap with butterfly buckle, ETA automatic movement in pink pearl effect, “Côtes de Genève” oscillating weight in gold and black, Saint Honoré logo engraved in pink gold.

2. “Lutecia Dame”: pink PVD finish steel case, water-resistant to 3 bars, white mother-of-pearl dial with Roman numerals and date at 6 o’clock, leather strap (also available with a metal bracelet). 3 hands quartz movement.

Such a movement should meet specific criteria including accuracy in 5 positions between -4 seconds and +6 seconds over 24 hours. However, while it is one thing to regulate an accurate watch in the controlled world of a workshop, performance in the sometimes-extreme real world, i.e. on the wrist, can be very different. Changes in position and temperature, and shocks, can all adversely affect isochronism (timing regularity) of a wristwatch. The challenge with EMC was in developing a mechanical watch that can be regulated by its owner to obtain the finest chronometric performance. EMC is the first precision mechanical watch that enables timing to be both easily monitored and easily adjusted by its owner.
With EMC, not only can the wearer obtain the precise timing rate on demand, they can then use that information to accurately adjust the timing of their watch to suit their own personal rhythm.  Electro Mechanical Control (EMC) is the world's first precision mechanical watch in which the timing can be monitored and adjusted by the user to suit their lifestyle – EMC is fully interactive.
Infact EMC is a fully 100% mechanical watch. The electronics have absolutely no effect on the movement; they only enable monitoring of the movement's precision in a similar way that the electronic speedometer or rev counter of a car has no effect on the mechanical engine and gearbox.
EMC features a deconstructed dial with four separate indications: A clockwise tour of the displays, from top left, presents the: on demand, precision indicator (instantaneous rate delta δ)  ranging from -20 to + 20 seconds per day; seconds dial with counter-balanced seconds hand; hours and minutes; and 80-hour power reserve indicator. Turning EMC over reveals the fully in-house movement with the integrated circuit board – the EMC 'brain' –, the top of one of the two mainspring barrels near the crown and the top of the balance wheel and optical sensor on the winding handle side.
At its heart, EMC has a triple objective: to show how external parameters (positional changes, temperature and pressure) influence the timing of the movement; to enable the wearer to adjust the timing; and to facilitate interactivity between the timepiece and its owner.
EMC is inherently a precision mechanical watch with an in-house movement conceived, developed and crafted in the URWERK ateliers in Zurich and calibrated by URWERK in Geneva. The movement meets the most stringent quality control, with its chronometric performance tested in five positions during a 30-day cycle to ensure that it meets the highest standards for a precision watch.
EMC movement is equipped with the following features:

- A bespoke balance wheel made of ARCAP, an alloy long admired by URWERK for its non-magnetic and anti-corrosion properties. From the very first glance, the originality of this specially-developed balance is striking. Its perfectly linear morphology is the result of careful calculations to optimise data from the optical sensor, maximise aerodynamic efficiency and minimise loss of amplitude.

 - Power is provided by two large mainspring barrels in series, mounted vertically on a single shaft. These provide a long 80-hour power reserve, which is conducive to stable linear timing performance.

  - The timing adjustment screw is accessible on the back of the watch and allows the owner to make very fine adjustments to the balance rate regulator by changing the active length of the balance spring by turning a simple screw.

The innovative EMC timing rate monitoring unit has been developed to include the following:

  - An optical sensor on the balance wheel capturing the precise rate of oscillation of the 4 hertz / 28,800 vph regulator, over a period of 3 seconds. This sensor consists of a transmitter and a receiver positioned either side of the balance, and is triggered manually by pressing a button on the left side of the case.

- A 16,000,000-hertz electronic oscillator
This provides EMC’s reference timing rate. The performance of the balance of EMC (4hz) is compared against this lightning-fast oscillator to obtain the most accurate measurement possible.

- Artificial intelligence (the computer)
This computer determines the difference between the timing rate of the movement and that of the reference oscillator. Each microsecond difference between the two values is expressed as a gain or loss of a second per day of the timing rate. A variation of just 0.0000014 of a second per half-vibration translates as a variation of a second per day.

- Manual-winding generator (the generator):
EMC’s monitoring unit (the optical sensor and the computer) is powered by a micro-generator made by the Swiss company Maxon, which is well known for developing motors for NASA’s Mars rovers.

EMC marks the dawn of a new era, that of an interactive smart mechanical watch allowing the owner to gauge the precision of their timepiece’s chronometric performance and fine-tune it to better suit their daily rhythm and pace of life.

RBaptiste Watch – Fire Arms Engraving Meets Exclusive Watchmaking

Roland Baptiste, the Belgium based engraver who is specialised in the hand engraving of knives and fire arms, now enters into the horology industry by launching his own watch brand - RBaptiste Watch. The exclusive timepieces from this brand will feature the successful alliance between traditional gun manufacturing/engraving skills and fine mechanical watch making.
Roland Baptiste has been an engraver for twenty years. Since his entry into the engraver’s profession, he has consistently striven to perfect his craft to the highest degree possible. Since he is from Liege, it was, but natural that his craft would focus upon embellishing the fine arms that are turned out in that city. Liege is one of the oldest traditional guns making centres of the world and considered as the gun making capital of Belgium. Gradually, his growing reputation as a master craftsman took him to the entire fine gun making houses in Belgium, and then to the historically prestigious gun makers of Britain and other parts of the world. The hand engraved weapons by Roland Baptiste are exclusively made and his customers include world famous gun manufactures.

Roland has had yet another passion – fine mechanical watches – and this kept him looking at the horologer’s craft from the time he was a boy. There is a parallel in the horologer’s perfection of minute parts put together with precision and an engraver’s zeal to bring out the best through fine work. Gradually he coined a plan to bring together these two crafts and create an amalgam of perfection combining engraving and mechanical watch making. This passion paved the way in the creation of RBaptiste Watches.
For many years, increasing mechanization of embellishment work has left even some connoisseurs unable to distinguish between computer generated and hand crafted engraving. It must be admitted that computerized embellishment is technically perfect. However, it lacks a soul that one gets from the efforts and the warmth of engraving done by hand. It took many meetings and discussions for R. Baptiste to find horologers who shared his visions for combining skills to create fine, hand engraved watches.
Conscious that he is not a watchmaker, R Baptiste does present himself as one. That would not be in keeping with the philosophy that guides his craft. He is the designer, engraver and guiding force behind this project, but the effort and master ship is not his alone. He has joined forces with a small manufacturer of fine watch cases from Latvia and a maker of watch movements from Switzerland to achieve his desire of offering hand engraved watches.
The watches offered through this partnership will offer a sense of the atelier where they were crafted. Each watch would have a dedicated space that would make for an engraver’s canvas.

In a parallel with fine, custom made guns, each watch from R Baptiste Timepieces collection would be personalized with engravings entirely as desired by the client commissioning it. A client commissioning such a watch would receive the combined efforts of craftsmen dedicated to offering their best efforts to create an object of beauty.
It is important that something that is novel, is not excessively so. R Baptiste did not want to fall into the easy trap of engraving a dial and offering a watch with conventional hands. The design had to offer more than a mere fancy dial would. The design would not be compartmentalized into a “sport” or “dress” watch, but would be ideal for use wherever its owner chose to take it: golfing, hunting, riding, to work, or to dinner, it would be an elegant accessory for any occasion that the owner desired to wear it to.
Like any fine watches in the world, the case of an RBaptiste watch will be made in an alloy that does not oxidize, and it is 42 mm in diameter. A Swiss ETA 2824 movement was chosen and specially modified for this design. A two level display shows the hours and minutes. When offered as a bracelet, the diameter would be 22 mm and the material that it is made from, would be specified by the client.
