Carl F. Bucherer MANERO PowerReserve

Unveiled at Baselworld 2013, the new Manero PowerReserve integrates power reserve indication and the high-precision CFB A1011 Manufacture caliber, the timepiece combines high functionality and sophisticated technology.

The power reserve indication is a classic design element with tradition. Originally used in marine chronometers, this indication soon became established in wristwatches too. It indicates the current state of tension of the mainspring and states the remaining time the watch will continue to run, as a number of hours. The Manero PowerReserve has also made the functionality and design of the power reserve indication its own, creating a watch with a very special face.
On a round indication at 3 o’clock, a hand provides information about the remaining power reserve. As the power runs down, the hand moves into an area that is shaded red. Also visible at a glance are the day of the week at 9 o’clock, the particularly large big date at 11 o’clock, and the integrated small seconds at 6 o’clock. The silver-colored dial is divided into an outer ring and an inner ring, which are differently colored. While all the functions are located in the light-colored inner circle, the darker outer circle is segmented by silver index marks. This varying visual aspect forms a pleasing transition to the stainless steel case, which has a diameter of 42,5 mm and a depth of 12.54 mm. The timepiece is beautifully complemented by a brown alligator-skin strap or stainless steel bracelet.

At the heart of the Manero PowerReserve is the Manufacture’s own automatic CFB A1011 caliber, which is integrated into a Manero for the first time in this model. As a further development of the CFB A1002 Manufacture caliber, the CFB A1011 shows the power reserve by means of a pointer, and in so doing draws on classic elements of watch design. A special feature of the movement is the peripheral, bidirectional oscillating weight that supplies the automatic gear train with power. The patented dynamic shock absorber known as “Dynamic Shock Absorption” (DSA) provides maximum efficiency and reliability.

Carl F. Bucherer Alacria Diva Bamboo

Like the bamboo plant, the Alacria Diva Bamboo from Carl F. Bucherer symbolizes strength on the one hand, and grace and pure beauty on the other. This model from the Alacria family has an aura of extraordinary luxury and striking originality.

For centuries, the bamboo plant has been associated with many things. Thus in China it is a symbol of long life, while in India it is a sign of friendship. In the Philippines, farmers set up bamboo crosses to bring good luck, whereas in Japan the bamboo is a symbol of purity.  Even in today’s world, bamboo also has a very wide variety of uses: as a decoration for the home, in the construction of gardens and facades, and for eating and drinking. And now – in the figurative sense – it is also being used in the watchmaking industry. Carl F. Bucherer has adopted the bamboo as a symbolic model for the creation of an exquisite watch. The result is a jewelry watch that is in the typically luxurious style of the Alacria range, yet has an extraordinary exoticism: the Alacria Diva Bamboo.
83 orange and black baguette-cut sapphires embody the slender forms of the bamboo on the white gold dial of the Alacria Diva Bamboo. Another attractive feature is the striking case made of white gold, which is also set with 90 orange and black baguette-cut sapphires and 239 round black sapphires. A single orange sapphire also decorates the gold crown.

The cutting of these long baguette-shaped gemstones is an extremely time-consuming and delicate process, requiring the fullest concentration on the part of the stone cutter. It is to this quality, and to the special color combination of the sapphires, that the Alacria Diva Bamboo owes its unique status in the world of watches. A further highlight is the orange strap made of fine Louisiana alligator skin and fitted with a white-gold pin buckle.

The exclusivity of the Alacria Diva Bamboo is not least due to its limited edition. The Lucerne-based watch Manufacture is producing just 10 copies, each with its own individual dial, at its workshops in Lengnau. The dial of each copy has its own individual design of orange and black baguette-cut gemstones. Thus each wearer of an Alacria Diva Bamboo has her own custom-made model.

Carl F. Bucherer Alacria TwoTone

With the Alacria TwoTone, Carl F. Bucherer presents a stunning new watch with a two-tone look. The fascinating interplay of silver-colored and rose gold facets conveys a graceful elegance and guarantees a brilliant and stylish look for the wearer.  The Alacria range from Carl F. Bucherer symbolizes femininity and perfect beauty. Finest-quality materials and a striking design frame the unique dial of this distinguished timepiece.

With its rectangular two-tone case and convex case flanks, the Alacria TwoTone remains true to the classic lines of the Alacria family. The timepiece harmoniously combines angular forms and longitudinal stripes with softer elements, the whole resulting in a brilliant and timeless piece of jewelry. The silver-colored dial, divided by two narrow light longitudinal stripes and one broad dark one, gives the Alacria TwoTone a classic elegance.
While all the other hours are represented as rose gold index marks, rose gold Roman numerals are used at 6 and 12 o’clock, and are tastefully framed by the central stripe. The stylish dial design is completed by the aristocratic hours and minutes hands in rose gold. The bicolor look is skillfully continued in the bracelet and in the case, which is 26.5 mm x 38 mm in size with a depth of 7.4 mm, and is available with or without diamonds. Inside the Alacria TwoTone, the CFB 1850 quartz movement ensures high-precision timekeeping.

Carl F. Bucherer Patravi TravelTec FourX Limited Edition

Titanium, ceramic and rubber: with the Patravi TravelTec FourX Limited Edition, time takes on a new material format. These selected materials, together with 18 karat rose gold, make the 125-year Jubilee Collection from the Carl F. Bucherer a real talking point among watch enthusiasts.

In the Patravi TravelTec FourX Limited Edition model, the watchmakers at Carl F. Bucherer bring together not only different time zones but also different worlds – worlds of exquisite materials. Fine 18 K rose gold, paired with extra-hard high-tech ceramic, which sets the highest standards in the time-consuming process of forming the bezel. And high-quality titanium and highly resistant rubber also play their role in an extraordinary overall concept. For together, these four very different materials add yet another dimension to the fourth dimension of time: exclusivity.

The design of the Patravi TravelTec, which was first launched in 2006, created entirely new challenges for engineers, watchmakers and designers, since the specification required the clear and simultaneous indication of three time zones, necessitating for the first time ever the integration of movement and case. In the Patravi TravelTec, the case contains part of the time-zone selection mechanism, which is controlled in two directions by means of a single push-piece. The process can even be observed through a window that has been let into the side.
The time and effort put into the design is very much aimed at ease of operation. For example, the direction of travel (east or west) can be pre-selected on the multifunctional push-piece at 10 o’clock and each push causes a jump to the next time zone, the flange with its imprinted 24-hour scale turning in either direction to guarantee that the red hours hand always shows the correct local time.

Unlike other “world time watches”, the Patravi TravelTec is suitable both for frequent flyers and for those who communicate with people all over the world. Those entering another time zone will prefer to make an adjustment at once, moving the wedge-shaped hours-hand forward or backward an hour at a time. Those who frequently need to make calls to other time zones will value the combination of the 24-hours hand and the patented Patravi TravelTec mechanism, which allows selection of the time zone of the person called to see at a glance whether it is day or night there.

As far as its “instrument look” is concerned, the Patravi TravelTec FourX Limited Edition has nothing to hide. For this reason, the watchmakers have given it a skeletonized dial permitting a free view of the gearing of the painstakingly decorated automatic movement. A visual delight is provided by the elegant date indication under an effective loupe: the figures are milled out of the date ring and remain invisible until they appear over a red background in the date window. The technical look of the overall appearance is reinforced by the colors. Matt black contrasts with noble rose gold, and the essential information on the dial stands out in bright red.

The new Modell Patravi TravelTec FourX, in a Limited Edition of 125, once again does honor to Carl F. Bucherer. This timepiece is designed as a tribute to the great visionary, the depth of his character and the creativity of his company. The founding year of his first watchmaking business is engraved on the watch’s case back. So the journey through time (zones) can begin.

88 RUE DU RHONE - Automatic Black Shadow

The latest model of 88 RUE DU RHONE, the Swiss brand associated with the cinema, comes on stage. Both timeless, thanks to its classic design, and distinguished appearance, Double 8 Origin Automatic Black Shadow will appeal to its public: a new demanding and refined generation of watch lovers. Luxury is not reflected in its price, but rather in the features of the timekeeper: a deep black dial heightened by finely designed Roma numerals, a central motif comprising an interlaced figure 8 guilloché decoration, and an automatic winding movement, whose visible balance also bears the number 88.

The model is displayed in a 60-second film. A minute during which the whole universe of the young Swiss watch Brand can be appreciated: traditional know-how, modernity, creativity but also mystery, fun and its love for the cinema. 88 RUE DU RHONE has meanwhile quite naturally become the official partner of BAFTA – the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.

Actors of their own lives, dynamic and urban, the lovers of the Brand will find in Double 8 Origin Automatic Black Shadow, a watch model in their image. Exuding the energy of assured character, this 42mm model is both powerful through its large round polished steel case, mounted on black leather, and refined through its silver Roman numerals and the details of its design. Making an impressive contrast, the bright red seconds hand with its counter weight in the form of an 8 stands out from a deep black dial, decorated with a discreet motif of interlaced figure 8s and pierced with a date window at 3 o’clock. The brand exploits its lucky number down to the finest detail. Thus the fortunate owners of this timekeeper will discover the “88” signature engraved on the crown, the name of “RUE DU RHONE” on the side of the case and on the case back. Finally, the movement’s oscillating weight is also decorated with a monogram portraying the 8s progressively reducing towards infinity.

A contrast of audacity and discretion, Double 8 Origin Automatic Black Shadow will appeal to lovers of watchmaking looking for a new form of luxury: Swiss quality, design and accessibility.

88 RUE DU RHONE - Double 8 Origin Black Rose Chrono

Swiss watch brand 88 RUE DU RHONE unveils their new ladies timepiece: the Double 8 Origin Black Rose Chrono. Sultry and seductive, yet boasting femininity, the Black Rose Chrono stays true to the modern and chic personality of the brand. The matt black 35mm case proves to be a powerful foundation while the rose gold Roman numerals and hands alongside diamond indexes distinctively spring to life from the jet black dial like flowers in bloom.

For the urban consumer, the accessible, stylish and contemporary brand has successfully met the expectations of a new generation of watch fans and connoisseurs. It is a brand conceived by a new generation of Swiss watchmakers, ultimately reflecting a new generation of the ideal consumer: dynamic and ambitious trendsetters that are both male and female. These are the pioneers that create their own destiny: in life, in love and in ultimate, infinite happiness. It is why the number “8” is so important to the product line, as it represents luck and with a double 8 comes infinite luck.
Unveiled at Baselworld 2013, the Double 8 Origin Black Rose Chrono offers ladies a refined matt black PVD chronograph style that is alluring with the richness of rose gold accents. With a slightly larger case size and deep black hue that is evident throughout, the piece brings forth a dark, ominous power while emanating beauty and refinement. Six effervescent diamonds serve as indexes on the dial beside rose gold Roman numerals adding a subtle “ladylike” hint. Three subdials, marking the seconds, hours and minutes, are found on the black canvas that is the dial with rose gold pushers for each that burst to life from the case.

Watch of the Year Award Goes to LANGE 1 TOURBILLON PERPETUAL CALENDAR

At this year's BASELWORLD, the title “Watch of the Year 2013” was awarded to the LANGE 1 TOURBILLON PERPETUAL CALENDAR by A. Lange & Söhne. The prize ceremony took place for the twentieth time. Lange gains the first prize for the tenth time.

The “Watch of the Year 2013” award was conferred at BASELWORLD, the largest international trade show for the watch and jewellery industry. The LANGE 1 TOURBILLON PERPETUAL CALENDAR in platinum by A. Lange & Söhne won this award in the men's watches category. Lange CEO Wilhelm Schmid has accepted the prize.
The choice was made by the readers of the weekly newspaper “Welt am Sonntag” and of “Armbanduhren”, a special-interest magazine. Only just launched last year, the top-tier model of the eminent Saxon manufactory competed with 150 men's models of other watch brands and ended up being the undisputed winner of the watch contest.

The LANGE 1 TOURBILLON PERPETUAL CALENDAR unites two classic complications in the iconic LANGE 1 style. Thanks to an ingenious arrangement of the calendar displays around the time indication, it presents a host of information in a superbly legible format.

HYSEK VERDICT 46MM TRIPLE TIME ZONE

Offering the world hours at a glance, the Verdict 46mm Triple Time Zone in rose gold features not only three time zone displays but also two day/night indicators thanks to its in-house calibre HW3056.

Without surprise, local time is represented by the central hour and minute hands, while the Arabic numerals 1 to 12 on the upper half of the dial indicate the chosen second time zone, according to the city displayed in the window at 12 o’clock. This time zone proposes the cities located west of Greenwich Mean Time, in North and South America, such as Los Angeles in America (GMT minus 8), Calgary in Canada (GMT minus 7), Mexico (GMT minus 6), or New York (GMT minus 5).

Conversely, on the lower half of the dial, the Arabic numerals represent hours of the third time zone based on cities located east of Greenwich. The chosen city, displayed at 6 o’clock, is situated on the European Continent, Africa and Asia. Examples include Paris in France (GMT plus 1), Moscow (GMT plus 4), Dubai (GMT plus 4), Hong Kong (GMT plus 8) and Tokyo (GMT plus 9). Both the second and third time zone displays feature the retrograde hours. Finally, 2 day/night indicators for each secondary time zone are located at 7 and 11 o’clock. Ultimate luxury, the Verdict Triple Time Zone can be made on demand, based on a selection of 24 cities.
Proposed in a 46mm case, the Verdict Triple Time Zone is made of either titanium or rose gold. A bicolor version in titanium and rose gold is also available. Alternating polished and satin-brushed surfaces, this timepiece is the subject of a careful construction emphasising its sophisticated strength and the force of its design.

Equipped with a sapphire back, it is proposed on a hand-sewn alligator strap, but can also be ordered with a titanium and steel bracelet.

HYSEK - IO JUMPING HOUR ROSE GOLD

Combining harmonious aesthetics and generous curves, the Io Jumping Hour from HYSEK, now available in rose gold, is adorned with a jumping hour in window movement, a playful complication offering a particularly original hour display– and ensuring a perfect readability.

Developed and realised within the Hysek manufacture workshops, this “numerical” complication has the particularity of displaying the hours and minutes figures within two big windows. Thus, the hands are here replaced by 2 rotating discs on which the hours and minutes are displayed. At each time slot change, the hours numeral instantly jumps, while a continuous-action disc shows the minutes.

This model comes in an imposing 47mm diameter case in rose gold or in black PVD and a beautiful open-worked dial, compounded by different assembled levels and a sapphire centre on which the day/night indication is displayed.

HYSEK Verdict 45MM Tourbillon in Rose Gold & Titanium

This elegant and sophisticated reinterpretation of the Verdict Tourbillon proposes a subtle balance between the flying tourbillon and the grande date and will delight devotees of Haute Horlogerie as well as all those with a taste for contemporary lines.

HYSEK’s 45mm Tourbillon received a favourable eleventh-hour verdict, literally. This is because judgment was passed to remove the Arabic numeral 11 hour index which is a key design characteristic to make way for the tourbillon placed at the 10 o’clock position. The other hand-applied Arabic numerals 1, 5 and 7 which are signature design codes remain on the dial.

As there is no top-end supporting bridge, one will recognise this as a flying tourbillon. With an open display case back, the brand’s in-house Manufacture tourbillon’s beauty can be fully appreciated from top and rear view perspectives. A grande date display sits at the 2 o’clock position and is set via a push-button at 4 o’clock. The 45mm diameter case in rose gold and titanium is rounded to suit those more into classic-shaped timekeepers while retaining the characteristic HYSEK look.

From the back, it is worth observing the results of the high-end finishings employed such as cerclage and hand-chamfering which are comparable to Poinçon de Genève standards.  The in-house automatic movement, made from 345 components, features an oscillating weight in 22-Karat gold and rhodium-plated.  Also available in titanium only.

HYSEK Verdict 46MM Double Tourbillon

Going one step further in its work on the streamlined architecture of its skeletonised movements, the Hysek Manufacture presents this year a splendid automatic double tourbillon realised internally.

The baptism name of the Verdict collection is semantically legitimate because the word comes from the Latin adjective "verus" that can freely be translated as "true" and may be understood as the expression of a guarantee or some kind of award.  Indeed, this double tourbillon hosts 331 components meticulously assembled by the master watchmakers of the Hysek Manufacture. Both tourbillons, independent one from the other, are coupled by means of a differential gearing mechanism. The watch’s rate is thus the average of the rate of both tourbillons, which means that it is twice as precise as a traditional movement.

Hysek presents this calibre with sought-after finishing like a Rose des Vents decoration on the movement plate, while the dial enhanced by a vertical guilloché with Côtes de Genève effect has been harmoniously open-worked to highlight the tourbillons. The beauty of the movement as well as the quality of its finishing can also be discovered through the back of the case in sapphire.

An aperture at 1 o’clock offers a comfortable reading of the date and a double micro-rotor, placed at 10 o’clock allows increasing the winding power by combining the micro-rotor visible on the dial side to the one placed on the back of the watch. A technical and aesthetic masterpiece, this manufactured double tourbillon shows its ambitions with a 46mm diameter case, proposed in limited edition of 8 pieces available in rose gold as well as in titanium and rose gold.

MIDO - Commander Lady Mother-of-Pearl

Swiss watch brand MIDO expands the Commander collection with the new model: the Commander Lady Mother-Of-Pearl. Like all models from Commander collection, this ladies watch beautifully evokes the curves and oblique lines of the Eiffel Tower . Equipped with an automatic movement, numerous aspects of this new model testify to a subtle evolution. A faceted and domed sapphire crystal protects the white mother-of-pearl dial, which lends a beautifully feminine touch to the Commander Lady Mother-of-Pearl. The faceted appliques are ingeniously reminiscent of the latticework of the Eiffel Tower.

The shape of the faceted and applied indexes calls to mind the latticework of the Eiffel Tower. They are treated with white Super-LumiNova®, as are the hour and minute hands, for easy readability at night. The Commander Lady Mother-of-Pearl is fitted with a black semi-lacquered leather strap. It is also available with a rose PVD-treated steel case and silver sunray satinated dial. Maurice Lacroix Masterpiece Tradition Phases de Lune

The Maurice Lacroix Masterpiece Tradition Phases de Lune is an exceptional model that identifies its owners as real connoisseurs. The moon phase is not simply a technical display, it also appeals to the emotional dimension associated with the Earth's satellite. Its physical influences on our planet have been demonstrated, and its different phases are sometimes believed to affect our daily lives. Some people make decisions depending on whether the moon is new, full, waxing or waning. But unfortunately, the moon is rarely visible during the day.  Maurice Lacroix addressed this problem in the 1980s by pioneering moon phase indication at a time when mechanical watches were regaining popularity.

In addition to displaying the moon phase at 6 o'clock, this wonderful model also shows the day of the week and the month at 12 o'clock, while a central hand indicates the date.  The precision of the displays is ensured by the caliber ML 37, a superb rhodium-coated automatic movement. Its circular graining and Côtes de Genève decoration is visible through the sapphire case back, as is the oscillating weight, also decorated with Côtes de Genève.

VALBRAY Oculus V.01 Chrono Collection

In 2010, Valbray presented its debut V1 collection of interactive high-end watches integrating a complex circular shutter system under a rotating bezel.

Thanks to the innovative diaphragm system, the Oculus V.01 Chrono collection offers essentially two watches in one, through a double display. By a simple rotation of the bezel at 90o, the timepiece changes from a classic and sophisticated “TWO-HANDS” to a sportive and contemporary CHRONOGRAPH.

In line with its interactive and avant-garde timepieces, Valbray could not fail to produce one with a less than intriguing and refined design.  Its ovoid case is easily identifiable by the pulled lines and the shining chamfers. The sculpted edges give it an energetic aspect, as it masterfully nests the chronograph pushers and the crown and completely integrates the watch strap.
Oculus V01 Chrono Titanium Full Black
Its dial, hand-assembled and meticulously finished, exhibits a multilayered construction and is decorated with the impertinent display of half-hours at 7.5 and 10.5, for the first time on a watch. The V on the dial “cuts” the wheel of seconds, reinforcing the dynamism of the design and underlining the timelessness of the brand. The hands are constructed from one block and open-worked, then facetted and satin-finished for a unique result. On the titanium models, the dial is enhanced with a honeycomb grid giving it a more sportive and racing appearance.
Oculus V.01 Chrono – Hypnosis Bleu
The back of the watch unveils the beautifully finished automatic Swiss mechanism with the redesigned rotor through the transparent sapphire glass, playing on the element of “hiding and revealing”, identifiable throughout the collection. The V.01 ideally conveys the astonishment triggered by fascinating opposites: energy and sensuality, rigor and audacity, functionality and aesthetics. At the juncture of the open and the close, the traditional and the contemporary the result is equilibrium, richness of content and perfection.

Maurice Lacroix Masterpiece Tradition 5 Aiguilles

Following the style of the Masterpiece Tradition, the hours, minutes and seconds are indicated by classic hands complemented by a calendar display. However, this model has one different feature: the day and date are not shown digitally in a window set into the dial but by an analog display involving two central hands with a distinctive design. This unusual feature has given the watch its name: the Masterpiece Tradition 5 Hands. Great care has been taken with the decoration of the automatic movement. Traditional circular graining together with Côtes de Genève give it a sparkling brilliance that will delight all watch lovers. The classic Côtes de Genève on the gold-plated oscillating weight can be seen shimmering through the sapphire case back. The model is available with several different dials and external parts, sometimes in a limited edition.

VALBRAY Oculus V.02 Grand Date Collection

By introducing a world premiere timepiece (Model V1 introduced in 2010) equipped with a circular shutter system hidden under the bezel, Swiss luxury watch brand Valbray sparked the interest of the watchmaking world. This year, with the 5 new models of the Oculus V.02 Grand date Collection, Valbray further enhances the interactivity of its watches through a circular unveiling function of the dial.

The diaphragm system, further developed, is even smaller (with a diameter of 43mm) and allows intermediate openings in its course, thus permitting a step by step reading of time. The V.02 timepiece becomes therefore the first in which a different function is displayed at each circular opening phase, with the obturator acting as a cursor to the underlying dial.

With its shutter closed, the watch is a sophisticated two-hand one. At the first step at 30o, a delicate “petite seconde” (Small seconds) wheel appears. At the second step at 60o, an imposing “grand date” comes. At the third and final step at 90o, the “petite seconde” and the “grande date” merge gloriously with the hours’ indicators and the minutes’ path. The “turning” effect is accentuated by the engravings on the bezel that follow the shape and the position of the shutter’s blades. The sensual ovoid shape of the case is emphasized by the chamfers all along its pure side lines. A small touch of impertinence is present on the dial with the use of half hours at 3.5 and 8.5, while the refined design of the multilayered dial and the path of the hours testify to the meticulous style of the Valbray watches.

The Oculus V.02 Grand date collection is a nod to the symbolism and balance of the circle, a shape apparent constantly on the watch: from the wheels of date and seconds to the “ring” of the bezel and the flange, circularity imbues the timepieces with its allure. The engraved phrase  “La vérité d’un homme c’est d’ abord ce qu’il cache” at the case back reminds that to truly understand a man you need to slowly discover his secrets, like every small detail of these unique watches.

The Oculus V.02 Grand date collection offers five diverse and distinct models: the Gold Tie, the Cool Blue, The Safari, The Nautic, and The Road 66. Each one is based on a defined atmosphere that is transmitted in the color and material codes and described a typology of contemporary lifestyle.

Maurice Lacroix’s new Masterpiece Worldtimer is an elegant timepiece with international appeal and it is dedicated to world travelers. This 42 mm Stainless steel world time watch, equipped with self-winding ML164 mechanical movement combines functionality, sophistication, style and craftsmanship.

Inscribed on the flange of the bezel, the exotic litany of cities makes the head spin. Two versions are available, one for Europe and one for Asia, with the continents delicately engraved on the center of the dial bordered by an hour-circle with Roman numerals. The European version features exceptional guilloché work with a Clous de Paris motif. The world map is highlighted in blue to match the hands and hour-markers, creating an attractive sensation of classical harmony. The Asian version favors powerful light effects, with its silvered dial, sun-brushed satin-finished continents, opaline oceans, pink gold numerals and hands and blue seconds hand.
Both models have a day/night indication at 9 o'clock and the date at 6 o'clock. ROAMER OF SWITZERLAND – Brand profile, History & Products

Since 1888, the traditional Swiss brand, ROAMER OF SWITZERLAND in Solothurn, has been producing quality materials and fine movements to meet the most demanding requirements for Swiss-made watches, combining sheer elegance, distinctive design and sporty functionality Established in 1888, ROAMER has kept its identity and independence as a Swiss watch maker and for the past 125 years has stood for the reliable innovation and exceptional quality of the classic Swiss watch. In 2013, the brand celebrated its 125’Th anniversary.

The beginning of the ROAMER story is the vision of a pioneer; Swiss industrialist Fritz Meyer (1859 – 1926) wanted to develop a solid but elegant watch with the aim of establishing it as a valuable accessory. To get a step closer to his dream, he opened a workshop in Solothurn in 1888, producing cylinder escapements for mechanical watches. With this the 29-year-old laid the foundation stone of the 125-year tradition of ROAMER. The company grew substantially over the next seven years, producing complete watches as well as cylinder escapements. In 1897 Meyer achieved the first milestone in ROAMER’s history. Already employing a staff of 60, he built his first watch movement and in honour of his 38th birthday named it Kaliber No. 38.

At the turn of the century Meyer used the occasion of having produced his 500,000th watch movement to complete his dream: in 1905 he partnered with ambitious watch maker Johann Stüdeli and launched Meyer & Stüdeli. In 1908 the successful watch brand “Roamer” was registered as a trademark in Switzerland.

In the years following, the company specialised in the production of high-precision mechanical watch movements, which are named after Meyer and Stüdeli as MST. Demand for the popular watch movements grew rapidly, and Meyer & Stüdeli increased production to 3000 movements per day. In 1923 more than a million watch movements left the factory.
To ensure quality control the company now also produced its own watch cases, assuring a near independence from its suppliers. One of the successful MST automatic watch movements of the collection already took the later brand name of ROAMER. In 1909 Leo Meyer, Fritz Meyer’s son, opened a branch in Great Britain, which until well into the 1970s would serve one of the most important markets for ROAMER.

The number of employees increased steadily in the 1930s. A total workforce of 1300 enabled the first in-house production of a Meyer & Stüdeli dial. With this the company now produced all elements of a watch in its own factory and established itself as one of the most distinguished Swiss watch and component manufacturers.

With the successful development of complete watches, many patent applications followed in the 1940s. One of many milestones was a low maintenance casing with exceptional water resistance, a leading innovation at that time.  Furthermore, British test pilots realised that the automatic movement of the ROAMER watch was equal to the extreme conditions during supersonic flight, even height and temperature drops had no repercussions whatsoever on the precision of the watches tested.

Henceforth advertising placards and advertisements emphasised in particular the ROAMER models of Meyer & Stüdeli, who also successfully managed to break into the American market with the opening in 1945 of the first branch in New York. The success of the prestigious ROAMER line and the increasing importance of a worldwide market lead to a change of company name. In 1952 the watchmaker became known as ROAMER Watch Co. SA. The English word “roamer” in the sense of “world roamer and rambler” paid tribute to the progressive aspirations of the company and emphasises the importance of the British, and later the international, market.
ROAMER ADVERTISEMENT, 1950s
In 1955, ROAMER’s Anfibio line caused great excitement with its patented water tight casing, a revolutionary technical innovation. Thanks to its functionality and reliability, Anfibio captured the hearts of watch wearers worldwide. The Stingray line, which was produced from the late 1950s onwards, was also legendary. Today the classic Stingray models with their simple watch hands, detailed face indices and high quality MST automatic movements are rare collector’s items. In the current collections new editions still represent the long tradition of ROAMER.

Owing to continued innovation ROAMER expanded its range in 1972 with quartz movements. Within three years of the world’s first quartz movement having been sold, the brand started selling its own quartz collections. ROAMER captured the Zeitgeist and successfully marketed its watches internationally.

With the launch of the Competence collection in 2003, ROAMER OF SWITZERLAND returned to its traditional past as the producer of mechanical watches. The new models lived up to their Swiss watch heritage through unique historical designs and exceptional quality.
ROAMER - Lady Compétence Royale [2006 - Quartz Watch, Steel Case, bezel and dial set with 433 full-cut diamonds (2.481 ct) and 12 blue sapphires]

By 2010 ROAMER, with its value for money, was one of the most powerful Swiss watch brands in the mid-price range. Together with renowned international business partners the brand was able to continually widen its network. On the occasion of its 125-year anniversary in 2013, ROAMER OF SWITZERLAND launched a limited new edition of the popular Stingray Chrono Diver. The numbered, limited run of 333 watches is presented in an attractive jewel case with a certificate and special history booklet.

ROLEX OYSTER PERPETUAL COSMOGRAPH DAYTONA PLATINUM

In 2013, Rolex is introducing a new prestigious version of the Oyster Perpetual COSMOGRAPH DAYTONA, the emblematic model launched in 1963, exactly 50 years ago this year. This legendary chronograph is proposed for the first time entirely in 950 platinum, the noblest of precious metals. It is equipped with a chestnut brown monobloc CERACHROM bezel and an ice blue dial.

A key part of the COSMOGRAPH DAYTONA’s identity is its CERACHROM ceramic bezel with a tachymetric scale, making the watch the ideal instrument to measure average speeds of up to 400 miles or kilometres per hour. The numerals and graduations are perfectly legible thanks to the deposition of a thin layer of platinum via a PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) process.
The COSMOGRAPH DAYTONA’s 40 mm OYSTER case, guaranteed waterproof to a depth of 100 metres (330 feet), is a paragon of robustness, proportion and elegance. The characteristically shaped middle case is crafted from a solid block of 950 platinum. The fluted case back is hermetically screwed down with a special tool exclusive to Rolex watchmakers. The winding crown, fitted with the patented TRIPLOCK triple waterproofness system, screws down securely against the case. It is protected by a crown guard that forms an integral part of the middle case. The pushers also screw down securely against the case. The crystal is made of virtually scratchproof sapphire. The waterproof OYSTER case provides optimal protection for the COSMOGRAPH DAYTONA’s high-precision movement.

The COSMOGRAPH DAYTONA is equipped with calibre 4130, a self-winding mechanical chronograph movement with a column wheel entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex. Like all Rolex PERPETUAL movements, the 4130 is a certified Swiss chronometer, a designation reserved for high-precision watches that have successfully passed the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC) tests. Its design and quality manufacture provide peerless precision and reliability. The oscillator, the true heart of the watch, has a blue PARACHROM hairspring patented and manufactured by Rolex in an exclusive alloy. Insensitive to magnetic fields, the PARACHROM hairspring offers great stability when exposed to temperature variations and remains up to 10 times more precise in case of shocks than a traditional hairspring.

This new COSMOGRAPH DAYTONA is fitted with a solid-link OYSTER bracelet in 950 platinum, with an OYSTERLOCK safety clasp that prevents accidental opening. The clasp also features the ingenious Rolex-patented EASYLINK rapid extension system that allows the wearer to easily increase the bracelet length by approximately 5 mm, for additional comfort in any circumstance.

Roger Dubuis Dedicates a Film to the Highly Exclusive Poinçon de Genève

A unique claim in the world of Fine Watchmaking, all timepieces made by the Roger Dubuis Manufacture bear the prestigious Poinçon de Genève stamp - also known as the Geneva Seal. This mark of excellence refers not only to the movement but to the watch as a whole, attesting to its Geneva origins, the quality of craftsmanship, its performance, exclusivity and durability. Now, this label that guarantees the highest standards of the watchmaker’s art is depicted in sumptuous imagery in a groundbreaking film, featuring the imposing eagle – the symbol of Geneva – displaying its power, a strong characteristic it shares with the timepieces of Roger Dubuis.

Since it was founded in 1995, the Geneva watchmaker Roger Dubuis has transcended all the conventions of Fine Watchmaking with its masterly creations that combine avant-garde with great tradition. Thanks to its fully integrated Manufacture, the brand is able to produce all watch complications in its own workshops, and demonstrates its bold, exceptional vision with mechanisms that are both sophisticated and innovative.

At Roger Dubuis, the choice of the Poinçon de Genève goes hand in hand with the quest for excellence that has inspired all of the watchmaker’s creative impulses since it was founded. The brand’s values are encapsulated perfectly in this prestigious label: audacity, traditional know-how, cutting-edge design, complex mechanisms and the creation of breathtaking timepieces that are not afraid to break the rules.

The eagle, crown and key: the symbol of the Canton and Republic of Geneva In the hierarchy of labels, the Poinçon de Genève is one of the most exacting. Only some 24,000 watches out of the 30 million produced each year in Switzerland receive this mark. Roger Dubuis is a unique exception in Fine Watchmaking, being the only Manufacture to get its entire production certified – around 5,000 watches a year. For Roger Dubuis, the Poinçon de Genève is not the end goal but the point of departure on the path to excellence.

Roger Dubuis Manufacture is proud of its Geneva origins and is a standard-bearer for this birthplace of Swiss watchmaking. Only watches assembled, cased-up and adjusted in Geneva are eligible for the Poinçon de Genève label, which incorporates in its initials the crowned eagle and key motif of the Canton of Geneva flag. At the 2013 Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH), Roger Dubuis paid a symbolic tribute to this emblem with a giant crowned eagle holding in its talons a key stamped with the values of the Poinçon de Genève: origin, exclusivity, know-how, performance and durability.

The Manufacture is now honouring these symbols of excellence once again with a bold film that casts light on the practical implications of the Poinçon de Genève, made by the well-known director Ruth Hogben. Following many international collaborations with leading names of fashion and couture such as Nick Knight, Alexander McQueen and Lady Gaga, Ruth Hogben has now turned her attention to illuminating the beauty of Haute Horlogerie and the Geneva Seal.

The Poinçon de Genève was introduced in 1886. Granted by the State of Geneva to a few rare watchmakers, it provides an official guarantee that a watch mechanism has been made by hand, assembled and adjusted in Geneva, and respects the highest watchmaking standards set by the 12 historical criteria. All components of a movement stamped with this label are finished and delicately decorated by hand, even those that will never be exposed to view.

In 2011, the year of the label’s 125th anniversary, the Timelab Laboratory of Horology and Microengineering, an independent organisation operating under the auspices of the State of Geneva, issued a new version of the Poinçon de Genève criteria that had been significantly updated to reflect clients’ expectations. The label’s original conditions were retained, while new requirements were added. The biggest change is that the whole watch must now be submitted for approval rather than just the movement. This means that each timepiece must individually undergo a series of rigorous tests carried out over seven days in order to verify its accuracy, water-resistance, features and power reserve.

The new criteria of the Poinçon de Genève amount to a demand for excellence that is fulfilled by all watches made by Roger Dubuis. In its component production workshops, 60% of the Manufacture’s master craftsmen – 60 people work in 20 teams, each representing a different skill – are dedicated to achieving the certification criteria. Protecting and promoting these traditional and regional skills requires not only rigour, but also time. The manufacture of a movement to Poinçon de Genève standards demands almost 40% additional work. This is probably why Roger Dubuis is the only Manufacture to get all of its watches stamped with the Poinçon de Genève.

REVELATION - R03 LEGEND FLY BACK MAGICAL WATCH DIAL®

Thanks to the patented, world premier MAGICAL WATCH DIAL® concept developed by Swiss luxury watch brand REVELATION, their new model R03 LEGEND FLY BACK features  two faces. Its transparent dial becomes black with a quarter turn of the notched bezel. This magical effect is possible thanks to the superposition of two polarizing discs whose nanostructures play the role of shutters. Each disc is covered with these nanostructures in the shape of shutter slats which are about 70 nanometers wide (70 billionth of a meter). In order for the discs to play their “on/off” role, they must be placed on top of each other and be able to pivot.

Their nano-structures will either block the light or let it pass through to the movement depending on the rotation of the bezel upon which one of the polarising discs is mounted. This is the principle which allows the mechanism to appear and reveals the secondary functions, such as the date, of the chronograph.

The R03 LEGEND FLY BACK system, derived from the extremely complex mechanism with a double differential coupled with an Archimedes’ screw of the first REVELATION watch R01 DOUBLE COMPLICATION, was modified to be placed directly inside the bezel of the watch. One of the polarising discs is directly geared by the bezel. The rotation of the bezel is done manually, at will, by the wearer who decides which level of transparency he desires for the dial to admire the inside of the watch.

The development of the polarizing discs that equip the REVELATION watches is the result of a partnership with the Swiss Center for Electronics and Microtechnology. This successful collaboration continues with the study of new specific discs whose cut-outs have been elaborated according to the axes of the hands of the R03 LEGEND FLY BACK movement.

The movement of the R03 LEGEND FLY BACK was developed by the company Dubois Dépraz. This family business, founded in 1901, produces chronographs since more than a century. The two companies have worked hand in hand to personalize this automatic chronograph with skeleton bridges.

The hand-fitting heights were engineered to integrate the MAGICAL WATCH DIAL® within the movement. The date system and the oscillating weight of this self-winding movement were designed and developed by REVELATION.  The appearance of this distinctive oscillating weight is reminiscent of the “Manufacture” TOURBILLON MANEGE® movement and is clearly representative of the brand. The same holds true for the bridges of the complication with its interior angles.

The case of the R03 LEGEND FLY BACK houses the MAGICAL WATCH DIAL® and is of an unequalled complexity. It has no less than 71 parts, which makes it a complication in its own right. The R03 LEGEND FLY BACK is currently available in either titanium or 18kt pink gold with the case middle and back cover in titanium, mounted on a rubber strap with a REVELATION folding clasp.
