Jacob & Co. Epic X Racing

This year, Jacob & Co. expands the EPIC X collection with the EPIC X Racing, new coloured versions of the EPIC X that take the sporting nature of these timepieces to a new dimension. Introduced in 2013,  the Epic X watches are modern versions of one of the most traditional forms of watchmaking: the open-worked, or skeletonized, watch, where the movement is visible both through the dial and the back of the watch, and, as well, has had as much metal removed as possible without compromising the functionality of the movement. The goal of the craftsperson making an open-worked watch is to achieve the highest level of transparency possible, and it’s this combination of visual lightness with structural integrity that gives this type of watchmaking its fascination.
Unlike most open-worked watches, which are skeletonized versions of normal watches, the Epic X collection is built around a specially constructed movement – the exclusive Jacob and Co. caliber JA, which has been designed as an open-worked caliber from the beginning.

The movement components are supported by two girder-like structures which flank the two most prominent elements in the movement: the mainspring barrel, which stores the energy necessary for the watch to run, and the balance wheel, at 6:00, whose oscillations allow the watch to keep track of time. The high tech nature of the movement contrasts vividly with its meticulous finishing, including carefully chamfered bridges and mirror-polished screws, with the entire composition punctuated by the highly polished settings for the going-train and balance jewels.
The engineers and watchmakers at Jacob & Co. have found a way to add color to the EPIC X, in the form of inserts into the distinctive case, while at the same time using new materials in the case itself. The two case styles are micro-blasted and Satin-finished Grade 5 Titanium (the EPIC X Racing Titanium watches) and Black DLC-coated Grade 5 Titanium (the EPIC X Racing Black timepieces).
The colour is added via inserts that fit into the structured case. In all versions, the right-hand bridge has EPIC X engraved, with matching coloured lacquer on these bridges. Likewise, the engraved Jacob & Co. logo appears on the inside of the case. The colours available in the Titanium (Grade 5 Titanium with coloured rubber inserts) and Black (the black is Black DLC Grade 5 Titanium with coloured Neoralithe inserts) versions are red, blue, orange and white.

Patek Philippe - Twenty~4 ®Haute Joaillerie Ref. 4909/110 "Aquatic Life"

Debuted at Baselworld 2014, this Twenty~4® Haute Joaillerie timepiece reflects Patek Philippe’s expertise and know how in the field of high jewellery watches as well as in traditional horology craft. Established since 1839, Patek Philippe has been safeguarding all the artistic skills needed to make the precious inner life of its timepieces visible from the outside, transforming them into the most beautiful and rarest treasures. The sparkling Twenty~4® Haute Joaillerie Ref. 4909/110 is a latest addition to this legacy.

Altogether 1937 diamonds and sapphires grace the dial, case, bracelet, and clasp of the Twenty~4® Haute Joaillerie Ref. 4909/110 with its poetic "Aquatic Life" motif. All gems are flawless and immaculately cut, the baguette diamonds sparkle in Top Wesselton white, and the fire of the sapphires is intensely blue. With a total weight of approximately 43.73 ct., they form a marine still life that was composed in Patek Philippe's design department and implemented in the manufacture's ateliers according to venerable traditions. It shows blue sapphire fishes of various sizes that swim in an ocean of diamonds.

Closed-set baguette diamonds beam on the gently inclined flanks of the 18K white gold case and bracelet. The diamonds in the case are arranged in subtle fan-shaped pattern, which made it necessary to cut every single one to a shape corresponding to its exact location. The baguette diamonds on the upper side of the bracelet and on the dial are invisibly set. The invisible setting is considered one of the most challenging techniques and from the gemsetter's point of view the most risk-fraught way to set gems. To make sure all stones are seamlessly joined side-by-side and neither parts of the setting nor the white gold of the case and bracelet can shine through between them, the lapidary must grind a narrow groove into the facet on the underside of each diamond baguette. The counterpart of each groove is a delicate gold clip raised out of the bracelet and case which clamps the precious stone and secures it in its place.

The positions of the countless clips and of the delicate grooves in the diamonds must correspond to fractions of a millimeter to assure that in the end, the set stones are perfectly adjacent to one another. Each of the blue fishes fashioned from rich-blue sapphires is then applied on this sea of diamonds. The smaller ones are navette-cut sapphire solitaires with a closed rose-gold setting. The larger ones are composed of many small brilliant-cut sapphires held by rose-gold bead settings arranged to depict the contours of the fishes and their speckles.

Because fine white diamonds lie beneath these sapphires, the light can easily shine through their blue body colour from below, thus amplifying their colour intensity and brilliance. Additionally, 855 small brilliant-cut diamonds totalling approximately 1.7 ct. glisten vibrantly between the links of the bracelet.

The lavishly finished caliber 16-250 is a manually wound mechanical movement that proudly reveals itself through the case back. The two bridges and the balance cock feature round-chamfered and polished edges. Their surfaces are adorned with Geneva striping. Gleaming red bearing jewels provide colorful accents while the balance, the center wheel, and the engravings on the bridges emanate a golden sheen. But above all, it is a mechanical movement crafted to the finest watchmaking standards, one which showcases its functionality: the balance, that vibrates 28,800 times an hour (4 Hz) and with an anchor-shaped lever transmits each semi-oscillation to the escape wheel, which in turn transmits each impulse via the fourth wheel to the third wheel and then to the center and hour wheels that carry the minute and hour hands. The two baton-style hands and the applied Roman numerals at XII and IV in 18K rose gold are typical design features of Patek Philippe's iconic Twenty~4® ladies' watch collection.

When Antoine-Norbert de Patek established the Patek Philippe manufacture 175 years ago, he clearly formulated his objective: "to build the world's best and most beautiful watches". This credo explicitly defines a watch as the totality of its mechanical inner life and the facets of its external appearance. It is an aspiration that has remained unchanged and is expressed in writing in the Directives of the Patek Philippe Seal. For this reason, the focus throughout the years was not only on watchmaking artistry.

Great emphasis was also placed on the many highly specialized artisanal techniques with which movements and cases were refined. They include different enameling arts such as painting on enamel, cloisonné enamel, champlevé enamel, relief and line engraving, guilloching, as well as the jeweller’s and gemsetter's handcrafts. As the demand for lavishly decorated timepieces waned in the 20th century and the community of gifted finissage artists grew smaller, the manufacture still retained their services. This was the case even if the results could not be sold and in the end were added to the private collection of the company's owners, the Stern family. Quite a few of these creations are now highly admired exhibits in the Patek Philippe Museum and so precious that it is justifiable to call them priceless. But perhaps the most important aspect is that, thanks to Patek Philippe's commitment, the last of these artisans were able to pass on their expertise to younger talent, preserving their valuable know-how for current and future generations. These rare handcrafts represent a cultural heritage without which Swiss watchmaking artistry would not have attained its globally unique status.

Ulysse Anchor Escapement

Ulysse Nardin's revolutionary new escapement, based on flexible mechanisms using the elasticity of materials, does away with the pallet staff. The new Ulysse Anchor Escapement reveals a hitherto unknown construction that tests the physical limits of materials. The silicon device, based on the principle of flexible materials, uses the elasticity of blade springs to dispense with the pivot of the pallet arms leaving them literally suspended in space.

Ulysse Nardin’s timeline is punctuated by inventions and world firsts. As early as 1862, the company’s founder secured the Holy Grail at the London Universal Exhibition — the Prize Medal in the complicated watch category.

The award not only attested to the excellence of its marine and pocket-chronometers, it also heralded the pioneering spirit of the brand in the 21st century: the first to develop a silicon escapement in 2001; the first to  produce a diamond balance-spring in 2002, and in 2005, the first to offer an escapement without the traditional  pallets and pallet-wheel. Instead the Dual Ulysse in silicon has two impulse wheels. The same year Ulysse Nardin  presented the first watch with a diamond escapement and, one year later, the first Diamond Coated Silicon (DiamonSil) escapement. Here again, Ulysse Nardin was the first to use silicon as a matrix on which to grow diamond crystal.

After seven years of research, development and improvements with Sigatec, a co-owned company specialised in silicon micro-components, Ulysse Nardin is now in a position to present what appears to be a paradigm change in the approach to mechanical watchmaking.
Overturning the traditional principle of the Swiss lever escapement, the new Ulysse Anchor Escapement features a circular silicon frame in which the pallet arms are suspended by two buckled blades — meaning curved under tension — one perpendicular to the other. This complex device relies on the physical property of blade springs to bend along one axis while remaining perfectly rigid along others, so as to reproduce the kinetic functions of a pivot.

The impulse, given at each semi-oscillation of the balance, transmits its energy to the blades, which snap from one stable state to another, very much like a snap hair clip. The pallet arms, without a pallet staff, thus pivot from side to side without generating friction. Better still, when it returns to its original position, the system gives back its stored energy with virtually no loss. Finally, the construction, which dispenses with the bridge for the pallet lever since it no longer pivots on a shaft, results in a slimmer movement.

This sophisticated mechanism, which should come into operation this year, opens new and unexplored opportunities for Ulysse Nardin.

Ulysse Nardin opens first flagship Boutique in Singapore

Swiss luxury watch manufacture Ulysse Nardin and its exclusive retail partner, The Hour Glass jointly announced the opening of the first Ulysse Nardin flagship Boutique in Singapore at The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands.

With over 2 decades of close exclusive-retailer relationship, the new standalone Ulysse Nardin boutique signifies a milestone of the strong bond shared between The Hour Glass and the independent watch manufacture.
Set to provide an unprecedented retail experience, the Ulysse Nardin boutique spans close to 1,000 square feet –the largest flagship store in Asia. Housed under one roof, horology buffs can feast their eyes on the complete collection of the Swiss marque’s diverse range, from its legacy marine chronometers to award-winning high complications and a dedicated collection of ladies mechanical gems.

Modeled closely after the Ulysse Nardin Baselworld wooden striped booth façade in Switzerland, the Singapore boutique also features a world premiere 3-dimensional globe dome with reference to the brand’s famous high complication, the “Moonstruck” watch dial. Encircled within the oversized marine porthole, the iridescent dome is a signature stamp of originality.

Jacob & Co. Epic X Tourbillon Baguette

The EPIC X collection, first introduced last year, was definitely unexpected from Jacob & Co. The brand has become famous for spectacular jewelry creations and larger-than-life, unique watches like the famous 2006 world premier Quentin Vertical Tourbillion 31-day power reserve. At the same time, Jacob & Co. has emphasized creating high watchmaking pieces of mechanical art. A unique combination of watchmaking and sport, the EPIC X caught the attention of people who were looking for a serious timepiece that could be worn just about anywhere – and still make a statement.

This year, Jacob & Co. expands this collection with the EPIC X Tourbillon Baguette (in two versions), which takes the nature of these timepieces to a new, sparkling dimension. The Epic X timepieces are modern versions of one of the most traditional forms of watchmaking: the openworked, or skeletonized, watch, where the movement is visible both through the dial and the back of the watch, and, as well, has had as much metal removed as possible without compromising the functionality of the movement. The goal of the craftsperson making an open-worked watch is to achieve the highest level of transparency possible, and it’s this combination of visual lightness with structural integrity that gives this type of watchmaking its fascination.
A skeletonized manually-wound tourbillon movement is the biggest treat of all, as the spinning tourbillon adds a kinetic element that captivates and mystifies.

Jacob & Co. adorned the watch with incredible baguette stones – diamonds and rubies or diamonds and blue sapphires. The 44mm 18K white gold case is set with baguette stones and the two vertical bridges in the movement are set with ruby or sapphire baguettes. The timepiece comes on either a honeycomb rubber or alligator strap, set with baguette diamonds.

Jacob & Co. Palatial Opera Flying Tourbillon

The Jacob & Co. Palatial Opera flying tourbillon is an exquisite masterpiece that reflects the high standards of horology and gem-setting techniques. Constructed to resemble an amphitheatre, every superbly executed detail has been designed and crafted to invite the apparently free-standing or flying tourbillon to take center stage.

While a traditional tourbillon is held in place by a bridge, a flying tourbillon is designed to appear as if it is floating above the dial of the watch. The exacting art of delicately hand-setting precious gems simultaneously elevates this watch into the status of a rare and magnificent jewel.
Behind the scenes at the Jacob & Co. Geneva, Switzerland atelier, micro-mechanical engineers and gem setters working on the Palatial Opera Flying Tourbillon employed a repertoire of complicated diamond setting techniques to plan in advance the precise angle, position and cut for every stone, one diamond at a time, creating special tools as part of the process.

The smooth appearance of the fully set diamond pavé dial is the culmination of 18 months of work. The invisible setting of the baguette diamonds, with no visible rose gold in between each one, extends all the way across the watch dial to include the tilted inner bezel. In this row of dazzling diamonds that shines the spotlight on the tourbillon, resting precisely between the tourbillon cage and the outer bezel, each baguette diamond is set at a slightly different angle, requiring knowledge, experience and the patient work of dexterous hands.
The Jacob & Co. logo is set on the pavé dial giving the impression that it is hovering just above it. Every carefully selected baguette diamond is internally flawless, Top Wesselton AVVS quality. In a measure of its outstanding performance, the watch has a power reserve of 100 hours and is finished with a baguette-set buckle and a rose cut diamond on the crown.

It is the first Hublot timepiece ever produced with a bi-retrograde function along with a central chronograph. This mechanical movement, entirely adapted for soccer fans, allows for the watch to be used to time each half of a game and even can track overtime.
Romero Britto unveiled his specially designed boxes, which will hold the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ Watches. Each football-shaped sculpture is constructed and decorated by Britto, himself the FIFA Ambassador for the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™, adding a special artistic touch to the limited edition timepieces.

The experience also brought an open format Q&A with Pelé. During the Q&A, “The King of Football” himself fielded questions about his collaboration with Hublot, the upcoming World Cup and the future of Major League Soccer in Miami.

Ricardo Guadalupe, Hublot CEO, said: “It is a privilege to celebrate Hublot’s partnerships with the FIFA World Cup Brazil, Romero Britto, and living legend Pelé here in Miami. Hublot has a strong, deep-rooted history with the sport of football, and we are thrilled to bring this history to life with the launch of our Big Bang Unico Bi-Retrograde Chronograph, the ultimate fusion of watchmaking and football. Partnering with Pelé – the iconic King of Football - and renowned artist Romero Britto allows Hublot to share our dedication to watchmaking, football and art as we prepare to celebrate the World Cup Brazil this summer.”
Although its official name is the "Hublot Big Bang Official Watch of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™", it has already earned the name "Soccer Bang". There are two versions: an 18K King Gold model with carbon fiber bezel, limited to just 100 pieces, and a black ceramic version, also with a carbon fiber bezel, limited to 200 numbered pieces. Both carry the official logo, on the transparent sapphire crystal back, showcasing the brand’s UNICO manufacture movement.

About “Hublot Loves Football campaign”
Pelé, José Mourinho, Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich, Luiz Felipe Scolari, Falcao, Roy Hodgson…living legends of football who have chosen Hublot, not only to be ambassadors and friends of the brand, but also to work together on a variety of projects. To mark the forthcoming FIFA World Cup™, for which Hublot is the Official Timekeeper and Official Watch, the Swiss watch brand invites us to discover them in a new, and different way. The result is 12 exceptional portraits which reveal them as they've never been seen before.
All of the images tell a story by capturing moments of closeness between the ambassador and the Hublot team: Pelé, the King of Football, was photographed on a stair landing in a fashionable Ipanema hotel in Rio, revealing his kindness and attesting to a strength and fitness extraordinary for his age.
Each photo bears Hublot's symbol for the FIFA World Cup: a football painted and decorated by the renowned artist Romero Britto, This ball links all those involved in the project with the official watches of the FIFA World Cup™, which are presented in cases in the shape of the football decorated by Britto.

Jacob & Co. Brilliant Skeleton Baguette

Adorned with 260 gemstones on its case, bezel, crown and buckle, the Jacob & Co. Brilliant Skeleton Baguette reflects a successful alliance between the classic skeletonising techniques and the jeweller’s art of meticulous, invisible gem setting.
The Brilliant Skeleton Baguette shines the limelight on every lovingly crafted component of the movement through its sapphire crystal front and case back. As is the tradition with skeleton watches, all non-essential metal on mechanical parts of the watch has been trimmed away, including on the bridge, plate and wheel train, leaving just the barest skeleton of the spectacularly executed movement that makes the watch tick, with the hand-wound balance wheel fully visible at 6 o’ clock.
Thanks to the dedicated, detailed work by gifted gem setters in the Jacob & Co. Geneva atelier, who have over half a century of experience between them, the invisible setting of the baguette diamonds, with no visible gold in between each one, has resulted in a breathtaking bezel with an alluring, tactile quality and a super smooth finish.
The Jacob & Co. Brilliant Skeleton Baguette is available in a limited edition of 101 individually numbered watches. The watch is available in rose or white gold and the crown is topped with a rose cut gemstone.
Precious gemstone and alligator leather strap options: white diamonds with black strap, rubies with green strap, orange sapphires with brown strap, blue sapphires with white strap, pinks sapphires with green strap, tsavorites with brown strap.

The Northern Lights is an inspirational natural phenomenon in regions of high latitude that fills the sky with surges of rich colored lights above the clouds. Reflecting the extraordinary hues of these captivating lights, the dial above the movement is made of hi-tech mineral crystal in a choice of red, green, yellow and blue - colors that echo the magnificent, iconic design of one of Jacob & Co.’s earliest watches, the Five Time Zone collection.
The watch is also available without mineral crystal resting above the movement, leaving the skeleton’s mesmerizing, meticulously polished and beveled architecture entirely open.
Every intricately crafted moving component of the Brilliant Skeleton Northern Lights is in plain sight through both the front of the watch and its sapphire crystal case-back.
The coloured mineral crystal used by the Jacob & Co. Geneva atelier in the Brilliant Skeleton Northern Lights collection is a material used in machinery for medicine, chosen for its ability to reproduce remarkably vivid colour.

Football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo joins TAG Heuer’s star team of sports & celebrity ambassadors

Swiss watch brand TAG Heuer has announced the signing of football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo to a long-term partnership as a TAG Heuer Brand Ambassador.

Two-time Ballon d’Or winner, Real Madrid forward and Captain of the Portugal team for the coming World Cup in Brazil, Cristiano Ronaldo joins an illustrious roster of TAG Heuer sports stars and celebrities that includes film actors Cameron Diaz and Leonardo DiCaprio, WTA tennis champion Maria Sharapova, Formula One World Champion Jenson Button, World Rally Champion Sébastien Ogier and the entire crew of 2013 America’s Cup winner Oracle Team USA. Past members have included actors Brad Pitt and Uma Thurman, golfing great Tiger Woods, and the most legendary names in the history of Formula One, from Ayrton Senna to Kimi Räikkönen, Fernando Alonso, Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton.
Born on the island of Madeira in 1985, Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro (named Cristiano Ronaldo or CR7) first played professionally in his native Portugal before joining Manchester United in 2003, where he scored more than 100 goals in 6 years. He became the most expensive footballer in history when he moved to the prestigious club of Real Madrid in 2009, and his current contract makes him the highest-paid player in the world. Portugal’s top goal scorer of all time and the first top European league player to reach 40 goals in a single season in two consecutive years, he scored an astonishing 69 goals in 59 appearances in 2013, and was thus awarded his second Ballon d’or in January 2014.

Jacob & Co. Brilliant Arlequino Flying Tourbillon

In the Brilliant Arlequino Flying Tourbillon timepiece, Jacob & Co. poetically merges the exceptional gem-setting artistry with spectacular high horology. This model is a daring, imaginative and enticingly feminine timepiece that echoes the richly coloured, chequered costume of a harlequin.

Produced in a limited edition of just 18 watches, and available in  18K white, rose or yellow gold versions, this sparkling and colourful timepiece is adorned with 205 vibrant, precious gemstones extending across its dial, bezel, crown and clasp. The flying tourbillon, constructed to appear as if it is floating above the dial of the watch, is a statement of the passion for extraordinary craftsmanship which lies at the heart of Jacob & Co. atelier.
The setting combinations of gemstones, which each have different levels of resistance to pressure is a mission that can only be undertaken by a master craftsperson with extensive experience. Like the original harlequins known for their physical agility on stage, the gem setters in the Jacob & Co. Geneva, Switzerland-atelier working on the Brilliant Arlequino watches had to constantly adapt their techniques to meet the specific demands of every gemstone, one by one – a task that requires patience, knowledge and agile, dexterous hands.
The invisible setting of the baguette diamonds, which leaves no visible precious metal in between each gemstone, forms part of a carefully constructed design that reveals just the rose gold of the crown, topped with a rose cut yellow sapphire. Adorned with sparkling white diamonds and pink, blue, green and orange sapphires, the Jacob & Co. Brilliant Flying Tourbillon is also available in fully pave, single-gemstone versions in a choice of ruby, blue sapphire, pink sapphire or orange sapphire.
