Jaquet Droz - Ateliers d’Art - Petite Heure Minute Year of the Goat

Swiss luxury watch manufacture Jaquet Droz Chinese New Year, this time the Year of Goat as per Chinese zodiac, by unveiling two new models from its Ateliers d'Art collection.

At the beginning of the Year of the Goat, the watchmaking firm will launch two new models in Goat - symbol of imagination, creativity, and a world of pastoral riches. The form of this creature recalls the nourishment it provides, but also presents a real aesthetic challenge when it comes to reproducing it on the dial of the Petite Heure Minute model.
The artisans of the Jaquet Droz Ateliers d'Art, who live and breathe this sense of challenge, decided to represent not just one goat, but three. Springing from the summit of an imaginary mountain, like an allegory of achievement and the hope of success for the year ahead, the three animals astonish with their striking realism. Each element of the body, each minute detail, is thrown into relief in three dimensions by the master artisan's skillful touch.
The end result is all the more captivating against the backdrop of a stylized dial evoking a motif of plum blossom in pure, simple lines. Together with bamboo, chrysanthemum and orchid, plum blossom is one of the four noble flowers that featured in Chinese iconography over 1,600 years ago.
Unfolding their petals in winter, these blooms are an early herald of the promises of spring and youth refound. They stand out against a background of white mother-of-pearl or black onyx, two materials that reappear on the underside of an oscillating weight surmounted by a ram's head.
To create the stylized plum blossom, "meihua" in Chinese, the Ateliers d'Art used champlevé enameling, a particularly demanding technique that guarantees a result of exceptional delicacy. The metal is hollowed out according to the desired design and the hollows are then filled with enamel, fired and hand-polished. The finished dial is reminiscent of the exquisitely fragile masterpieces of "Jianzhi," the Chinese art of paper cutting that dates from the middle of the first millennium.
Limited to just 28 pieces each, these two models work equally well in the fresh palette of white gold and Jaquet Droz blue and in the warm tones of red gold paired with a delicious wine burgundy.

Cloutier Nouvelle-France - Buy a Watch, Give Clean Water to a Person in Need

Cloutier Nouvelle-France, a new start up watch brand from Canada announces their debut collection of watches that carries a mission: Give clean water to a person in need.

Founded by a group of friends in Montreal, Cloutier Nouvelle-France was conceived as an alternative start up by combining their love of fashion, watches and social entrepreneurship, to offer elegantly crafted affordable timepieces with a greater purpose.
Over 1 billion people on this earth are still living in extreme poverty. According to UNICEF 17,000 children die per day, mostly from preventable and treatable causes.  Over 748 million people in the world do not have access to safe water. A child dies every 60 seconds from water-related diseases. Diarrhea, being one of these illnesses, is the second leading cause of death among children under five worldwide. Women and children spend 140 million hours a day collecting water for their families’ survival. Safe water is also considered a life blood of the Ebola treatment units and plays a huge part in preventing future outbreaks.
Cloutier Nouvelle-France strongly believes that every man, woman and child should have access to clean water. To achieve this mission the young Canadian brand has partnered with Wateraid, a non-profit organization to ensure that for every watch purchased, the gift of clean water will be provided to someone in need.  For every watch purchased Cloutier Nouvelle-France will provide 25$ to WaterAid for supporting specific WaterAid projects in sub-Saharan Africa. By purchasing a Cloutier Nouvelle-France timepiece, not only will you be the proud owner of a beautiful unique vintage inspired Swiss movement watch but will also be wearing a watch with a greater purpose and a story worth sharing.
WaterAid uses practical, locally-appropriate and cost-effective technologies so to ensure that operational maintenance requirements for the new water supply and sanitation facilities can be easily learned and adopted by local community members. All aspects of WaterAid’s projects are designed and implemented with long-term sustainability in mind. This means that upon completion of projects, community members are equipped with all the tools and knowledge required to manage and maintain their new facilities.
The Cloutier Nouvelle-France Collection is offering two models: La Classique & Le Chrono. Both models are offered in Rose Gold, Gold, or Stainless Steel case versions with a choice to select case sizes 40mm or 46mm. Other options include clear blue or full blue Hands and the customer can choose leather straps in Brown, Red, Black, or Blue colours.
The La Classique model is equipped with the Swiss Made Ronda 715 quartz movement and display basic timekeeping functions with a date indication at 3’o clock. Equipped with a Swiss Made Ronda 5030 D quartz movement the Le Chrono model offers classic chronograph functions and date indication in addition to usual timekeeping functions.

To promote this project Cloutier Nouvelle-France has launched a crowd funding campaign on Indiegogo on Nov 21 to raise $ 65,000 CAD. This campaign will close on December 31, 2014 (11:59pm PT). By backing this crowd funding project, the customers can pre order the timepieces -The La Classique (starts from $129CAD) and Le Chrono (starts from $179CAD). Customers can also chose the various styles of timepieces (Case, hands and strap) during this campaign.

AudemarsPiguet - Royal Oak Concept watch - Acoustic Research

Exceptional engineering and the power of sound merge in one of the most innovative concept watches created by a Swiss haute horlogerie watchmaking house. The result of an in-depth eight-year sound research programme with three patents pending, this new Royal Oak Concept watch, a unique prototype, will be unveiled by Audemars Piguet at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie 2015 (SIHH) in Geneva.

Engineered within Audemars Piguet’s acoustic research lab, this new Royal Oak Concept is the first chiming watch so acoustically considered as to become a sound concept in its own right. It has been sonically developed through an ongoing acoustic study programme in collaboration with the EPFL (EcolePolytechniqueFédérale de Lausanne) and it took three years to transfer that technological study into a watch concept. The result is scientifically defined sonic targets for watchmakers to measure and attain the ‘perfect’ minute repeater sound at a volume level never achieved before.

By applying the principles of stringed instrument making, Audemars Piguet has made a breakthrough in the acoustic quality of chiming watch technology and significantly enhanced sound transmission. In parallel, the Manufacture has innovated to overcome the necessary restrictions of water-resistance, which naturally dampens volume, with creative solutions increasing sound intensity. Finally, to further improve sound perception, Audemars Piguet developed a new – almost silent – striking mechanism regulator. The result?  The volume, pitch, tones and harmony of sound in a modern water-resistant minute repeater watch are all scientifically enhanced.
For the first time in the history of chiming wristwatches, this timepiece isn’t a minute repeater simply meant for the confidential use of its wearer. Instead, its unique sound becomes a powerful experience to be shared.

The family-owned watchmaker took a passionate as well as a technological approach to the study programme, engaging a carefully chosen community of researchers, including watchmakers, artisans, technicians and academics. The inner working of musical instruments was explored by a stringed instrument maker, an esteemed academic of the Geneva conservatory contributed on the subject of perceived sound, and an engineer from EPFL worked to improve sonic quality. Each added to the texture of the research programme, preventing it from becoming a simple academic exercise and highlighting sound as an expressive tool.

This new piece is a milestone in Audemars Piguet’s rich history of creating inventive, masterful and unique concepts: it breaks the rules of chiming watches by mastering sound.

Swiss watch brand VOGARD sells the patent for a world time mechanism and all related intellectual property to IWC Schaffhausen

VOGARD SA was founded by Michael Vogt in Nidau near Bienne in 2003 as a niche manufacturer of mechanical world time watches. VOGARDs patented Timezoner® system is the first and only watch in the world to provide time zone adjustment with a simple twist of the bezel and the first mechanical watch to allow clear indication of summer time (daylight savings time).

When the mechanism was first introduced at Baselworld in 2004 it attracted huge enthusiasm from watch industry experts, journalist, retailers and above all the globe-trotting travellers, because the market hasn’t seen such a revolutionary word time complication before.
VOGARD Datezoner
In the meantime thousands of VOGARD watches have now been sold around the world and have been tested vigorously day-in, day-out in real-life situations. Feedback from the international client base has been entirely positive, with the patented world time mechanism proving not only useful but also superbly reliable in the hands of both private and professional travellers. Eventually, the Timezoner® is a proven technology and ready for the next step of development.

Now VOGARD sold its patent and all related intellectual property to IWC Schaffhausen.  Due to the fact that the sale of the IP occurred on an exclusive basis, VOGARD will cease the manufacturing and selling of the Timezoner® as of 31 December 2014.

VOGARD as a company and as a brand are not affected by this transaction. Eventually, VOGARD will continue to offer After Sales Services for all VOGARD watches sold, as well as to supply its customers with spare parts.

Jaeger-LeCoultre unveiles Yearbook Eight - Tribute to rare handcrafts (“Métiers Rares®”) and the human hand

The human hand is the first and foremost instrument behind beautiful objects. In the eighth edition of its Yearbook – a photographic anthem to creativity and the artisanal skills that have played such a powerful role in the history and the life of the Manufacture –Jaeger-LeCoultre turn the spotlight on these rare handcrafts (“Métiers Rares®”) and the creative hands that both master and serve these crafts. Ten articles in pictures take us around the world, wherever works of art bear the signature of the human hand.

Every year, the publication of its Yearbook presents an opportunity for Jaeger-LeCoultre to highlight and strengthen its connection with the world of photography. Guided by a desire to preserve artistic know-how and achievements to better transfer them, the Grande Maison takes part in the dissemination of the work of talented photographers.
Yearbook 8 highlights emblematic artisanal professions featuring the peerless, irreplaceable contribution of hand-crafted operations. Invited to focus on the human being behind each object, the reader is thus taken on a journey around the world through the pages of this exclusive publication offering a wide-angle immersion into the very palm of these creative talents.

Métiers Rares®
The hand of the enameller, the engraver, the watchmaker and the setter have for centuries successively joined forces in adorning watches endowed with horological complications. The first part of the book focuses on historic watchmaking creations which pay tribute to the rare handcrafts (“Métiers Rares®”) deeply cherished by Jaeger-LeCoultre.

In Praise of Clay
The inherently sensual, soothing age-old art of the potter is the supreme example of a craft involving the hand, since only the latter can assemble a sophisticated Fine Watchmaking mechanism, and it alone can perfectly finish a clay vase.

Sacred Art
The craftsmen of the Marinelli bell foundry at Agnone in Italy appear to be fired by sacred inspiration. Evoking angelic voices, the results of their art can tolerate nothing short of perfection. The human hand draws, models, decorates, moulds, pours, glazes and paints. Everything comes from the mind, itself guided by the heart.

Leather Deep
Slowness and patience: two watchwords for Jaeger-LeCoultre watchmakers those are also dear to the hearts of the artisans at the Casa Fagliano in Buenos Aires, Argentina, who finely craft leather to produce custom-made polo boots that enjoy an international reputation. Recently, Fagliano has combined its unique know-how with that of the Manufacture to produce bracelets made of Cordovan leather for a re-edition of the legendary Reverso 1931 watch.

Hybris Artistica
In the form of a poster placed at the centre of the Yearbook, Jaeger -LeCoultre highlights its Hybris Artistica collection of 12 models majestically marrying watchmaking techniques with artistic creativity. Each of them testifies to the meticulous work of the artists and above all to the irreplaceable intuition guiding their every move, since this alone can enable them to perfectly position a diamond or to perform such complex skeleton-work.

Hybris Mechanica 11
An elegant treasure on the wrist, Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Master Ultra Thin Minute Repeater Flying Tourbillon is one of the world’s thinnest minute repeaters. Through a lengthy process of trial and error, the Manufacture’s craftsmen succeeded in developing an ingenious system that eliminates the usual pause between the hours and minutes when the watch does not chime the quarter hour.

Carriers of Light
The arm stretches out to enable light to pass through the piece of glass and reveal the subtle nuances of its colours. A familiar move for the stained glass window makers at the Loire workshop in Chartres (France), who cultivate the medieval technique of stained glass window making. This meticulous art transforms light over time.

Precious Hours
Radiance and daintiness meet and mingle on the ladies’ watches delicately adorned by the Jaeger-LeCoultre artisans. Like a soft caress on the page, the creations are enhanced by the light and by the satin-soft atmosphere radiating from these photographs.

Virtuoso hands
Releasing the inner voice of an instrument, attaining virtual auditory perfection in a violin. The stringed instrument-makers from Cremona (Italy) hand down their know-how and secrets from century to century, giving a second timeless life to the wood of their instruments. An additional touch of soulfulness that makes the very air vibrate with peerlessly beautiful sound.

Of colours and other places
To conclude the Yearbook, American photographer, Steve McCurry provides striking shots of “Holi” the Hindu Celebration of Colours. To celebrate the coming of spring, the population, especially in northern India, descends into the streets with their bodies covered in coloured pigments.

The Yearbook 8 is on sale in Jaeger-LeCoultre boutiques all over the world.

Watch In Focus - Longines Heritage Military 1938

The idea of a military watch tends to render something a false impression in the mind's eye. When we think of military equipment, we think of armour-plated battle monsters, brim full of weaponry and gadgetry to strike fear into the hearts of the enemy, but the reality is something quite different. Like anything designed to operate where the user is in serious danger of losing their life, the brief is simplicity, quite literally. Hardware should do its job in the least complicated way possible, no more no less, whether its purpose is to be a bristling mega-tank or a straightforward wristwatch. In the arena of war, failing equipment is not an option.

With time being such a critically important aspect of warfare, a military, standard-issue timepiece needs to be as simple as they get, and the same is as true now as it was in 1938 where the origins of this Longines reissue reside. Clean, simple, uncluttered, the Heritage Military 1938 collection honours a snapshot of wartime military issue, and isn't a million miles away from the current British armed forces CWC wristwatch - albeit with a beating mechanical heart instead of a ticking quartz one.

Longines is a hugely respectable brand, and although it still flies somewhat under that radar, more people are beginning to take notice of it. The release of the hugely popular Legend Diver sparked a revived interest in their heritage pieces, and thanks to the company's extensive back-catalogue, it’s a formula they've been able to replicate with consistent success since. But don't think that Longines are relying on heritage alone, because these reissue pieces are extremely well made, a technological improvement over the originals. Using modern materials and techniques, the pieces benefit from increased reliability and durability without losing their vintage charm.

And that's something else they have, a quality you can't see, or touch, or measure. Longines watches have soul, character, something that makes you want to own them. Often, a buying decision is based on the balance between the head and the heart, but in the case of Longines, both can be had in the same purchase. With the Heritage Military 1938 - and with pretty much all the other Heritage pieces for that matter - there's a feeling of genuine desirability, and its probably because they don't leave a single box un-ticked. Rich heritage? Yes. Attractive? Check. Affordable? Very. Reliable? One of the best.

The Heritage 1938 collection also includes a GMT and a very attractive twin-register chronograph, but don't think of this as a review of a single watch, or even of those three; the Heritage 1938 is a doorway to a world of keenly priced, achingly good-looking watches from a been-there-done-that watchmaker that deserves far more attention. If there's something Longines has learned from its years supplying watches to the military, it's how to do something cleanly, simply and really damn well.

ENCELADE-1789 - Limited Edition Cufflinks Collection in Association with W MOTORS

ENCELADE-1789, Switzerland based luxury accessories brand that produces extra ordinary mechanical cufflinks has announced its partnership with exclusive HyperCar producer W MOTORS. In December this year, ENCELADE-1789 will be launching a limited edition cufflinks collection specially dedicated to the customers of W MOTORS. A few pieces from this high end cufflinks collection will be also made available to other customers through ENCELADE-1789 retail outlets on request.
W Motors and Encelade-1789 are two independent firms with a unique approach to luxury design. Both are committed to manufacturing stunning objects, producing an element of surprise, working with people (rather than machines) and developing the very best expertise and know-how. It is these values that have made the two firms heavyweights of the luxury sector and, of course, natural partners.
W Motors (W for "wolf") is a "hyper car" manufacturer with innovation and technical expertise at its very core. The firm's ultra-exclusive racing models are genuine melting pots of cutting-edge, modern-day technology. The firm collaborates with a range of major names including Magna Steyr (which has worked with Aston Martin, BMW and Porsche), Ruf Automobile (a manufacturer that has worked with Porsche) and Studiotorino, a design firm that acts as a consultant on W Motors projects and has turned the company's "hyper cars" into machines straight out of science-fiction.
This ambitious project was launched back in 2012 by Ralph R. Debbas, the firm's CEO, and has since spawned numerous imitations. His big idea was to approach the concept of the "hyper car" in a completely different way. The "hyper cars" are manufactured in Turin (with production soon moving to Dubai), and feature some of the most demanding and highest quality materials available, both inside and out.
Encelade-1789 is a family-run business driven by a collective passion to design and produce innovative, patented luxury accessories that are both technically demanding and highly creative. For its first collection, the brand has developed a range of cufflinks. "Encelade" (in English, Enceladus) is a moon that orbits on one of Saturn's rings (the E ring, to be precise). This circular orbit reflects the brand's philosophy, and it is a principle at underpins each and every one of its accessories. For example, the brand's cufflinks rotate a full 360° just like a planet surrounded by a ring.
With W Motors and Encelade-1789, it's all about speed. The "hyper car" manufacturer's Lykan model has a top speed of 395 km/h (245 mph), while the ball bearings in the designer's cufflinks are capable of rotation speeds of up to 150,000 rpm thanks to high-precision technical design and cutting-edge research.
Under the bonnet, the wolf-spirited Lykan boasts a flat-6 engine that produces a growl throaty enough to set even the bravest prey quaking in its boots. And to compliment the Lykan’s terrifying growl, Encelade-1789 adds a touch of hypnotism, with the rotating rings and central wheel of the cufflinks creating a hypnotic effect that captures the eye. And with 12 ball bearings in each pair (a world record), Encelade-1789's cufflinks are capable of full, smooth 360° rotation.
While W Motors and Encelade-1789 both produce technically demanding objects, they also share a passion for beauty. With diamonds set into the headlights and cufflinks, a range of exclusive hand-crafted finishes and components selected with the utmost care and attention, these two brands share many distinctive features.

On the Lykan "hyper car", each carbon fibre sheet is fitted and worked by hand. Similarly, all 56 components in each and every Encelade-1789 cufflink is meticulously selected. Both brands have an unrelenting drive to achieve the very highest quality. That's why W Motors' models and Encelade-1789's cufflinks are only available in extremely limited series.

W Motors’ decision to commission Encelade-1789 to manufacture its cufflinks also reflects the brand's highly creative approach. In fact, Encelade-1789 has solved a problem that many demanding cufflink-wearers face, having patented a brand new feature, the "CLIP". This small accessory "clips" onto the bottom of the cufflink to hold it tight against the shirt, eliminating any gaps and preventing the cufflink from sliding back and forth. This feature provides unrivalled appearance and comfort and represents a revolution in its field. Each and every W Motors/Encelade-1789 limited-edition piece comes with a pair of 316L steel CLIPs.
The W Motors/Encelade-1789 cufflinks are produced in a limited run of just 101 pairs and are supplied in an individually numbered case. Each cufflink features 12 ball bearings, three 316L steel rings and a gold and blue PVD central wheel, with a special release schedule for the individual serial numbers-

  • Number 0 will be available from one of Encelade-1789's outlets – the exact location remains a secret for now
  • Number 1 will be exhibited at the W Motors showroom in Dubai
  • Numbers 2 to 50 will be available exclusively to W Motors customers
  • Numbers 51 to 100 will be on sale at a selection of Encelade-1789 retailers, on request.

And for those with an eye for detail, the top section of the box features the following inscription (in French): "il n’y a pas d’innovation sans désobéissance aux règles" (to innovate, you have to break the rules). Yet again, nothing is left to chance. This is the family's philosophy, which comes from the grandfather of the founders. Although he is no longer with us, this philosophy will remain forever etched into the DNA of Encelade-1789.
These cufflinks will be available from 1 December 2014 and will go down in history as the first accessories of their type selected by a luxury car manufacturer. They are pieces brimming with avant-gardism and innovation, with an irreproachable finish worthy of the Haute Horlogerie tradition.

The Big Pilot’s Watch Edition Muhammad Ali was launched in 2012 on the occasion of grand opening of IWC’s Flagship Boutique in New York City. Limited to 250 pieces, this exclusive edition pays tribute to the legendary Muhammad Ali, who has gained global acclaim for his amazing career and lifetime achievements both in and outside the ring.

The Big Pilot’s Watch Edition Muhammad Ali is modelled unmistakably on an IWC legend: the historic Big Pilot’s Watch of 1940. The clearly organized matte-black dial, the arrowhead index at “12o’clock” and the bold, luminescent numerals and hands guarantee minute-perfect legibility of the time, regardless of the light.
As IWC’s Flagship Boutique in New York City Opened with a Knockout Watch Launch a reference to The GreatestTM*, who often wore red boxing gloves for his fights, hands and appliqués are highlighted with signal-red SuperLumiNova®**, which gives the watch a unique, sporty, and distinctly masculine look. Red is also mirrored on the inside of the black alligator leather strap.
The case back bears the official logo of Muhammad Ali’s 70th birthday. Prior to opening og the New York boutique, IWC also auctioned off a unique version of this exclusive edition on behalf of Celebrity Fight Night, donating the entire proceeds to the Muhammad Ali Center. To underline their common intentions, a part of the proceeds from sales of the limited edition was used to support the Sportsman of the Century’s charitable causes.

The exclusive watch was sold in an impressive package – together with the monumental tome “GOAT – Greatest of All Time.” Weighing 75 pounds and measuring 20320 inches, with over 3,000 illustrations by more than 150 photographers and artists, the book is a celebration of Muhammad Ali’s life.

GRECO Genève - Les Temps Modernes - Hexagonal Nut-design Watch

In anticipation of Baselworld 2015, Swiss watch brand GRECO Genève unveils its collection Les Temps Modernes –the fruit of 23 years of watchmaking excellence. A celebration-party commemorates the event.

With mastery of materials and subtle decoration, GRECO Genève embodies these values through its conception and fabrication of Swiss watches. Now the brand unveils an iconic Hexagonal Nut-design watch.

The simple machine nut –an indispensable reference in industrial design –is lodged deep within the collective unconscious of the world. Today, this design element steps up from its functional origins to affirm a new mechanical identity: chronometric precision and excellence in Swiss watchmaking.
With the unveiling of its Hexagonal Nut-design watch, GRECO Genève has been the unexpected surprise at the Carrousel du Louvrein Paris at the Salon Belles Montres. In watchmaking, where aesthetic values go often hand-in-hand with their functional counterparts, some of the most legendary designs are the direct descendents of functionality.

At the other end of the spectrum, GRECO Genève’s approach has been to metamorphose a quintessentially functional object into a luxury item: trendy, urban and totally contemporary. Today two editions of the Hexagonal Nut-design watch are being launched, heralds of the collection Les Temps Modernes: the LTM-18t and the LTM-04t.
These timepieces, bold in character, are recognizable even from a distance as the signature of GRECO Genève. They unite state-of-the-art technique, the most modern materials and unrivalled savoir faire. They embody excellence. For this watch, GRECO Genève has performed a veritable exploit of mechanical know-how: fitting an authentic Swiss movement into a waterproof case in the form of a machine nut, including screw threads.

Equipped with a HUB1155 self-winding chrono movement open-worked to reveal the fine mechanics, and with a date window at 6 o'clock, the Classic Fusion Chrono Aerofusion Cricket bears on its dial four distinctive signs directly referring to cricket: on the dial, we can see at 12 o'clock a triple applique in reference to the stumps which are placed on the wicket, which is the name for one of the two sets of 3 wooden poles defended on the field by the batsmen, while the hands on both counters are shaped like the cricket bat, which is reminiscent of a short paddle and made from willow and rattan.
The case-back bears the exclusive symbol of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 in transfer form on the sapphire crystal. This assembly is rounded off by a red calfskin leather strap stitched onto black rubber, with triple saddle stitching in the style of a cricket ball.
This 45 mm diameter watch is available in two versions: a King Gold limited edition of 100 numbered pieces (it is Hublot 18K gold with an extra 5% platinum which gives it this even more intense red colour, thereby making it even more precious), and a titanium edition, lightweight and more impact resistant, of 250 numbered pieces.
