Jaquet Droz - Ateliers d’Art - Petite Heure Minute Year of the Goat

Swiss luxury watch manufacture Jaquet Droz Chinese New Year, this time the Year of Goat as per Chinese zodiac, by unveiling two new models from its Ateliers d'Art collection.

At the beginning of the Year of the Goat, the watchmaking firm will launch two new models in Goat - symbol of imagination, creativity, and a world of pastoral riches. The form of this creature recalls the nourishment it provides, but also presents a real aesthetic challenge when it comes to reproducing it on the dial of the Petite Heure Minute model.
The artisans of the Jaquet Droz Ateliers d'Art, who live and breathe this sense of challenge, decided to represent not just one goat, but three. Springing from the summit of an imaginary mountain, like an allegory of achievement and the hope of success for the year ahead, the three animals astonish with their striking realism. Each element of the body, each minute detail, is thrown into relief in three dimensions by the master artisan's skillful touch.
The end result is all the more captivating against the backdrop of a stylized dial evoking a motif of plum blossom in pure, simple lines. Together with bamboo, chrysanthemum and orchid, plum blossom is one of the four noble flowers that featured in Chinese iconography over 1,600 years ago.
Unfolding their petals in winter, these blooms are an early herald of the promises of spring and youth refound. They stand out against a background of white mother-of-pearl or black onyx, two materials that reappear on the underside of an oscillating weight surmounted by a ram's head.
To create the stylized plum blossom, "meihua" in Chinese, the Ateliers d'Art used champlevé enameling, a particularly demanding technique that guarantees a result of exceptional delicacy. The metal is hollowed out according to the desired design and the hollows are then filled with enamel, fired and hand-polished. The finished dial is reminiscent of the exquisitely fragile masterpieces of "Jianzhi," the Chinese art of paper cutting that dates from the middle of the first millennium.
Limited to just 28 pieces each, these two models work equally well in the fresh palette of white gold and Jaquet Droz blue and in the warm tones of red gold paired with a delicious wine burgundy.

AudemarsPiguet - Royal Oak Concept watch - Acoustic Research

Exceptional engineering and the power of sound merge in one of the most innovative concept watches created by a Swiss haute horlogerie watchmaking house. The result of an in-depth eight-year sound research programme with three patents pending, this new Royal Oak Concept watch, a unique prototype, will be unveiled by Audemars Piguet at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie 2015 (SIHH) in Geneva.

Engineered within Audemars Piguet’s acoustic research lab, this new Royal Oak Concept is the first chiming watch so acoustically considered as to become a sound concept in its own right. It has been sonically developed through an ongoing acoustic study programme in collaboration with the EPFL (EcolePolytechniqueFédérale de Lausanne) and it took three years to transfer that technological study into a watch concept. The result is scientifically defined sonic targets for watchmakers to measure and attain the ‘perfect’ minute repeater sound at a volume level never achieved before.

By applying the principles of stringed instrument making, Audemars Piguet has made a breakthrough in the acoustic quality of chiming watch technology and significantly enhanced sound transmission. In parallel, the Manufacture has innovated to overcome the necessary restrictions of water-resistance, which naturally dampens volume, with creative solutions increasing sound intensity. Finally, to further improve sound perception, Audemars Piguet developed a new – almost silent – striking mechanism regulator. The result?  The volume, pitch, tones and harmony of sound in a modern water-resistant minute repeater watch are all scientifically enhanced.
For the first time in the history of chiming wristwatches, this timepiece isn’t a minute repeater simply meant for the confidential use of its wearer. Instead, its unique sound becomes a powerful experience to be shared.

The family-owned watchmaker took a passionate as well as a technological approach to the study programme, engaging a carefully chosen community of researchers, including watchmakers, artisans, technicians and academics. The inner working of musical instruments was explored by a stringed instrument maker, an esteemed academic of the Geneva conservatory contributed on the subject of perceived sound, and an engineer from EPFL worked to improve sonic quality. Each added to the texture of the research programme, preventing it from becoming a simple academic exercise and highlighting sound as an expressive tool.

This new piece is a milestone in Audemars Piguet’s rich history of creating inventive, masterful and unique concepts: it breaks the rules of chiming watches by mastering sound.

Watch In Focus - Longines Heritage Military 1938

The idea of a military watch tends to render something a false impression in the mind's eye. When we think of military equipment, we think of armour-plated battle monsters, brim full of weaponry and gadgetry to strike fear into the hearts of the enemy, but the reality is something quite different. Like anything designed to operate where the user is in serious danger of losing their life, the brief is simplicity, quite literally. Hardware should do its job in the least complicated way possible, no more no less, whether its purpose is to be a bristling mega-tank or a straightforward wristwatch. In the arena of war, failing equipment is not an option.

With time being such a critically important aspect of warfare, a military, standard-issue timepiece needs to be as simple as they get, and the same is as true now as it was in 1938 where the origins of this Longines reissue reside. Clean, simple, uncluttered, the Heritage Military 1938 collection honours a snapshot of wartime military issue, and isn't a million miles away from the current British armed forces CWC wristwatch - albeit with a beating mechanical heart instead of a ticking quartz one.

Longines is a hugely respectable brand, and although it still flies somewhat under that radar, more people are beginning to take notice of it. The release of the hugely popular Legend Diver sparked a revived interest in their heritage pieces, and thanks to the company's extensive back-catalogue, it’s a formula they've been able to replicate with consistent success since. But don't think that Longines are relying on heritage alone, because these reissue pieces are extremely well made, a technological improvement over the originals. Using modern materials and techniques, the pieces benefit from increased reliability and durability without losing their vintage charm.

And that's something else they have, a quality you can't see, or touch, or measure. Longines watches have soul, character, something that makes you want to own them. Often, a buying decision is based on the balance between the head and the heart, but in the case of Longines, both can be had in the same purchase. With the Heritage Military 1938 - and with pretty much all the other Heritage pieces for that matter - there's a feeling of genuine desirability, and its probably because they don't leave a single box un-ticked. Rich heritage? Yes. Attractive? Check. Affordable? Very. Reliable? One of the best.

The Heritage 1938 collection also includes a GMT and a very attractive twin-register chronograph, but don't think of this as a review of a single watch, or even of those three; the Heritage 1938 is a doorway to a world of keenly priced, achingly good-looking watches from a been-there-done-that watchmaker that deserves far more attention. If there's something Longines has learned from its years supplying watches to the military, it's how to do something cleanly, simply and really damn well.

IWC Schaffhausen Big Pilot’s Watch Edition Muhammad Ali (Ref. IW500433)

The Big Pilot’s Watch Edition Muhammad Ali was launched in 2012 on the occasion of grand opening of IWC’s Flagship Boutique in New York City. Limited to 250 pieces, this exclusive edition pays tribute to the legendary Muhammad Ali, who has gained global acclaim for his amazing career and lifetime achievements both in and outside the ring.

As IWC’s Flagship Boutique in New York City Opened with a Knockout Watch Launch a reference to The GreatestTM*, who often wore red boxing gloves for his fights, hands and appliqués are highlighted with signal-red SuperLumiNova®**, which gives the watch a unique, sporty, and distinctly masculine look. Red is also mirrored on the inside of the black alligator leather strap.
The case back bears the official logo of Muhammad Ali’s 70th birthday. Prior to opening og the New York boutique, IWC also auctioned off a unique version of this exclusive edition on behalf of Celebrity Fight Night, donating the entire proceeds to the Muhammad Ali Center. To underline their common intentions, a part of the proceeds from sales of the limited edition was used to support the Sportsman of the Century’s charitable causes.

GRECO Genève - Les Temps Modernes - Hexagonal Nut-design Watch

In anticipation of Baselworld 2015, Swiss watch brand GRECO Genève unveils its collection Les Temps Modernes –the fruit of 23 years of watchmaking excellence. A celebration-party commemorates the event.

With mastery of materials and subtle decoration, GRECO Genève embodies these values through its conception and fabrication of Swiss watches. Now the brand unveils an iconic Hexagonal Nut-design watch.

The simple machine nut –an indispensable reference in industrial design –is lodged deep within the collective unconscious of the world. Today, this design element steps up from its functional origins to affirm a new mechanical identity: chronometric precision and excellence in Swiss watchmaking.
With the unveiling of its Hexagonal Nut-design watch, GRECO Genève has been the unexpected surprise at the Carrousel du Louvrein Paris at the Salon Belles Montres. In watchmaking, where aesthetic values go often hand-in-hand with their functional counterparts, some of the most legendary designs are the direct descendents of functionality.

At the other end of the spectrum, GRECO Genève’s approach has been to metamorphose a quintessentially functional object into a luxury item: trendy, urban and totally contemporary. Today two editions of the Hexagonal Nut-design watch are being launched, heralds of the collection Les Temps Modernes: the LTM-18t and the LTM-04t.
These timepieces, bold in character, are recognizable even from a distance as the signature of GRECO Genève. They unite state-of-the-art technique, the most modern materials and unrivalled savoir faire. They embody excellence. For this watch, GRECO Genève has performed a veritable exploit of mechanical know-how: fitting an authentic Swiss movement into a waterproof case in the form of a machine nut, including screw threads.

The case-back bears the exclusive symbol of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 in transfer form on the sapphire crystal. This assembly is rounded off by a red calfskin leather strap stitched onto black rubber, with triple saddle stitching in the style of a cricket ball.
This 45 mm diameter watch is available in two versions: a King Gold limited edition of 100 numbered pieces (it is Hublot 18K gold with an extra 5% platinum which gives it this even more intense red colour, thereby making it even more precious), and a titanium edition, lightweight and more impact resistant, of 250 numbered pieces. PANERAI LUMINOR 1950 - 3 Days Chrono Flyback Automatic Ceramica, 44mm (Ref. PAM00580)

PANERAI unveils its new LUMINOR 1950 Flyback Chronograph timepiece executed in black matt ceramic based on zirconium oxide and equipped with automatic Caliber P.9100. In this new Officine Panerai wath, the classic quality of the design is masterfully integrated with the sophistication of the P.9100 manufacture chronograph movement and with the remarkable technical quality and design of the black ceramic case.

The essential lines of the case and dial are faithful to the unmistakable Panerai identity, being unaffected by the existence of the flyback function, which instantly zeroes the chronograph hands and restarts them without it being necessary to stop and zero them first. In the P.9100 calibre the blue chronograph seconds hand and the rhodium plated minute hand are centrally mounted, so that the dial carries only the continuous small seconds counter at nine o’clock, symmetrical with the date window. The push-pieces which control the chronograph functions are positioned at 8 o’clock (flyback, reset) and 10 o’clock (start, stop), thus leaving intact the outline of the lever device protecting the crown which helps make the case of the Luminor 1950 water-resistant to 10 bar (equivalent to a depth of about 100 metres).
The material of the Luminor 1950 case, 44 mm in diameter, is a synthetic ceramic based on zirconium oxide, which is up to five times harder than steel but substantially lighter in weight, as well as exceptionally resistant to scratches, corrosive agents and high temperatures. Technologically it is a very advanced material which is complicated to synthesise. It is created by a long, delicate process which transforms zirconium powder into a black ceramic, with a matt finish, remarkably even and pleasant to the touch.
Every component of the case is individually moulded and undergoes successive stages of working and firing, first at a low temperature (about 100 °C) and then at a higher temperature (up to 1500 °C), for about three days. The process is concluded with the finishing stage, crucial for ensuring that the dimensions and proportions of all the components are absolutely perfect, culminating in the final bead blasting which gives it an even, matt finish.

On the back of the case a large porthole in sapphire crystal reveals the P.9100 manufacture movement, the first chronograph calibre with automatic winding completely developed and made in the Officine Panerai manufacture.
The calibre has the typical characteristics of a top-of the-range chronograph, such as the column wheel and the vertical clutch. It has two spring barrels connected in series which provide a power reserve of three days, a bidirectional rotor which winds the springs of the two barrels, and a variable inertia balance wheel which oscillates at 28,800 vibrations/hour (4 Hz). Fitted with the device for instantly zeroing the seconds, the P.9100 calibre consists of 302 components and is 13¾ lignes in diameter and 8.15 mm thick.

The Luminor 1950 3 Days Chrono Flyback Automatic Ceramica (PAM00580) is supplied with a natural untreated leather strap and a second strap made of rubber. The buckle is in titanium, a light, strong, hypo-allergenic material to which a special resistant black coating has been applied so that it matches the appearance of the watch, and it is easily replaceable using the screwdriver supplied.

TUDOR CLAIR DE ROSE

The TUDOR Clair de Rose line is a hymn to feminine beauty. As its name suggests, it takes its inspiration from a world of reverie and moonlit nights and transports us into a unique delicate and sophisticated universe. The centre seconds hand in the form of a cut-out TUDOR rose lends captivating and infinite charm to the timepiece.

Roundness and softness come to mind to define its cushion-shaped case, its curving silhouette and domed sapphire crystal. The looped decorations harmoniously enveloping the winding crown are a subtle detail of jewellery design. The crown is topped with a transparent dome containing a rose, the logo of the TUDOR brand in the 1950s.
Softness also characterizes the cloud-inspired, stylized scroll motif on the mother of-pearl dial, applied using an elaborate procedure ; the rounded cut-out hands add yet another hint of softness. In the gem-set version, the central rose evokes a full moon in a starry sky.
The fabric strap features the same scroll motif on a satin background, an extra touch of refinement. The triple fitting attaching the bracelet to the case adds a mechanical aspect and creates an unexpected contrast that enhances the piece.
The TUDOR Clair de Rose comes in three sizes with a 26 mm, 30 mm or 34 mm case. Available in steel or in steel and 18 ct pink gold, this model comes with a vintage steel bracelet, a reinterpretation of the “rice grain” bracelets of the 1950s, or a satin or fabric strap. The mother-of-pearl dial, with or without gem-setting, is available in Sky, White, Jade or Tahiti Pearl.

Visconti Scuba Abyssus 3000M

Since its establishment in 1988, Visconti has been associated with luxurious writing instruments and accessories crafted in fine Florentine traditions. In 2013, to mark its twenty-fifth anniversary in 2013, Visconti started making luxury wristwatches utilising the know-how and the traditional tools of Florentine watch-making.

After the successful launch of its first two models - “Solotempo” and “GMT” in its “Bridge Over Time” collection - Visconti expanded its wristwatch collection in 2014 with a professional diver’s watch, a chronograph and a show-piece in sapphire crystal with a Visconti calibre movement.

Unveiled at Baselworld 2014, the Scuba Abyssus, the brand’s first ever diving watch reflects the unparalleled creativity of Visconti’s designers and the peerless skill of its engineers.  Designed to explore the ocean depths up to 3000 meters, this dive watch was created in association with CNS, Italy’s National Diver Centre.
Dressed in a rugged monobloc case made with Grade 5 titanium, the Scuba Abyssus 3000M carries all the necessities required for a professional deep diving watch that can be carried to the extreme depths of ocean.
The bayonet-mounted crown at 2 o'clock features a patented system for unlocking from movement. The case is also fitted with a flat-convex sapphire watch glass, rotating titanium bezel with engraved time scale and micro-dot in luminescent material at 0 o'clock, with external aluminium bronze saw tooth and sliding rotation bloc at 4 o'clock. An automatic helium escape valve is poisoned at 6 o'clock to protect the timepiece from the extreme pressures during deep diving.
The two part dial: upper half is in black colour and lower part is in blue - features luminescent indexes in two colours and minutes scale with bars on inclined rehaut. Other than basic timekeeping functions, the dial also boasts a date window at 2 o'clock and Power reserve display at 11 o'clock.
The Visconti Scuba Abyssus 3000M is equipped with a Swiss made automatic movement which offers power reserve up to 42 hours. The Self winding rotor of the movement is engraved with Visconti logo.
