German Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel inaugurates A. Lange & Söhne’s new manufactory building

On 26 August 2015, German Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel and Saxony’s Prime Minister Stanislaw Tillich travelled to Glashütte to inaugurate A. Lange & Söhne’s new manufactory building. The complex provides a highly advanced and optimised working environment for the traditional craft of watchmaking.

The ground-breaking ceremony took place on 5 September 2012. Just under three years later, on 26 August 2015, the new complex was opened by German Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel and Saxony’s Prime Minister Stanislaw Tillich. The Chancellor gave thanks to Lange’s employees for their dedication.
The new building with its 5400-square-metre production area is an urban landmark at the southern gateway to the town of Glashütte. With its bright and clearly structured facade, the complex harmoniously blends in with its historic architectural surroundings. Slightly inclined, large-format atelier windows assure ample lighting at the workstations. The ultramodern workshops mean that the watchmakers can enjoy virtually dust-free conditions.

The double-skin walk-in facade has a climate-control function. The machines and other equipment used to manufacture movement parts are located in the lower-slung front part of the building. Several departments in which small components are manually engraved and decorated will also be housed in the new building.
Accordingly, the new building is a testament to sustainable architecture and innovative energy management. Saxony’s largest geothermal energy plant – with 55 downhole heat exchangers extending to a depth of as much as 125 metres – keeps the indoor climate pleasant throughout all four seasons. The electricity needed to operate the pumps is green. Thus, the new Lange manufactory is a CO2-free facility that makes an important contribution to climate change mitigation.

The investment was a double-digit amount in millions of Euros. This makes the project A. Lange & Söhne’s biggest investment ever and underscores the company’s commitment to Glashütte as a production site.

IWC Schaffhausen Big Pilot’s Watch Edition “Patrouille Suisse” (Ref.IW500910)

Once again, IWC Schaffhausen is paying tribute to the high-flying excellence of the Patrouille Suisse with a special edition for 2015. The pilots of the Swiss Air Force display team have been wowing international air show crowds for decades with the precision and perfection of their formation flying. This year IWC is recognizing the exceptional flyers of the Swiss aerobatics squadron with a Big Pilot’s Watch Edition “Patrouille Suisse”, a special version of the iconic watch first produced in 1940 which will be limited to 250 watches.

Dedicated to aviators, the Big Pilot’s Watch Edition “Patrouille Suisse” (Ref.IW500910) is presented in grey with a case of blasted stainless steel featuring the characteristic design elements that make this professional timepiece for pilots instantly identifiable.
The 51011 calibre – the largest automatic movement manufactured in-house by IWC Schaffhausen – combines all the features that have proved their worth in the long history of mechanical watches from IWC. Within no time at all, the spring-mounted rotor and Pellaton pawl-winding system build up a power reserve of over 7 days, and after exactly 168 hours the movement is mechanically stopped by an ingenious train in the power reserve. Stopping the movement before all the tension in the spring has been exhausted eliminates the danger of diminishing torque in the mainspring. This ensures the same level of accuracy the whole time the watch is running. The power reserve display at “3 o’clock” provides a reliable indication of the time remaining until the movement comes to a stop. A special feature of the Big Pilot’s Watch Edition “Patrouille Suisse” is the small seconds at “9 o’clock”, symmetrically opposite the power reserve display. The date display is at “6 o’clock” as usual. The 46-millimetre case encloses a soft-iron cage that protects the movements against extreme magnetic fields.

IWC’s historic 52 T.S.C. Big Pilot’s Watch of 1940 is clearly recognizable as the model that inspired the design of the Big Pilot’s Watch Edition “Patrouille Suisse”. It is a style icon and the model which established the standard design on which all classic pilot’s watches are based.
A clearly organized dial, the arrowhead index at “12 o’clock” and the bold, luminescent numerals and hands guarantee minute-perfect legibility of the time regardless of lighting conditions. The Big Pilot’s Watch is the only model made by IWC Schaffhausen to feature such an imposing crown, a reminder of those pioneering days of aviation when pilots were exposed to the elements in unheated – or even open – cockpits. To combat this they wore thick gloves with their quilted flying suits, which made it difficult for them to wind and set their watches. Hence the need for an unusually large, chunky crown. The current stainless steel variant is rounded off by an anthracite-coloured wristband of embossed calfskin with a folding clasp.
The case back features an engraving of three jet planes resembling the Northrop F-5E Tiger II – the planes the Patrouille Suisse pilots use to perform their aerial displays with the same high levels of precision we associate with Swiss watches. The inscription “TRIBUTE TO PATROUILLE SUISSE” and the consecutive numbering on the case back (001/250, 002/250 etc.) indicate the exclusivity of this special limited edition. The Big Pilot’s Watch Edition “Patrouille Suisse” will be available from September 2015 at IWC boutiques in Switzerland and from Swiss retailers, then later at IWC boutiques worldwide.

Montblanc Heritage Collection 1912 Capless Rollerball

Montblanc introduces the new Capless Rollerball completing the Montblanc Heritage Collection 1912, a line of writing instruments that pays tribute to the innovative spirit of Montblanc. Inspired by one of the Simplo Safety Filler pens, a small hard rubber fountain pen with a retracting nib mechanism that became one of the Maison’s early breakthroughs over 100 years ago, the collection is defined by innovation, absolute attention to detail and the dedication to perfection that have become the guiding principles of Montblanc.

With its minimalistic purity of form, the Heritage 1912 Capless Rollerball begins a new wave of innovation. While the mechanism is based on the first version of the Montblanc Stylo, otherwise known as “Tintenkuli”, Montblanc delivers perfect functionality with a new refill designed to not dry out. The writing instrument can be used with a simple twist mechanism without the inconvenience of having to open a cap. The new technology of the Heritage Collection 1912 Capless Rollerball not only brings more convenience to the writing experience; it also ensures that the unique feeling of writing with ink is maintained. This result is achieved with a refill system that is new to Montblanc, developed to prevent the drying of the real ink inside.
The Capless Rollerball is available in black precious resin for a sleek look or in stainless steel for a minimalist industrial feel, enhanced with platinum-plated fittings for an added touch of sophistication. The Montblanc emblem, symbol of the Maison’s pursuit of perfection and fine craftsmanship is crafted from mother-of-earl lacquer encased in a transparent cap top.

The final addition to the Heritage 1912 Collection is yet another feat of engineering and design, made possible through Montblanc’s relentless quest to constantly rethink the writing experience by delving into a long tradition of pushing boundaries. Evoking the heritage of the Maison, the simplicity and purity of the writing instrument are thought fully paired with innovation.

The Montblanc Heritage 1912 Capless Rollerball in both black and steel is available from Montblanc boutiques worldwide.

Ulysse Nardin Marine Diver Artemis Racing Limited Edition

Swiss luxury watch brand Ulysse Nardin launches a limited edition Marine Diver to celebrate its association with Sweden’s Artemis Racing team, one of the popular teams attending 35th edition of America’s Cup, the most important yachting competition of all time.

Vivid in deep-ocean blue with bursts of signature Artemis Racing yellow, the limited edition of 250 timekeepers was revealed in Gothenburg, Sweden, host to the America’s Cup World Series. This preliminary competition, held on August 28-30, is a fitting atmosphere to reveal the new Marine Diver Artemis Racing watch. Since the beginning, only four countries have won the America’s Cup – the United States, Australia, New Zealand and Switzerland. Artemis Racing is striving to be the Cup’s new steward, bringing it to Europe and Sweden for the first time.
The energy and ingenuity of the Artemis Racing team is mirrored in this special execution of the Marine Diver, made for the milestone moment.Presenting a sleek yet durable mixture of textures, including stainless steel and rubber, the piece is ideal for yachtsmen who welcome the fiercest of competition. Reflecting love for the sport while honoring the occasion is the original pattern on the watch’s face; here, vessels seem to float on the sea as if awaiting their turn to set sail. Highlighting the partnership is the Artemis Racing insignia and “Challenger 35thAmerica’s Cup Artemis Racing” tribute. These details, alongside the bold hour markers, hands and strap accented in yellow, with the Artemis Racing logo just below the dial, show a highly personal connection between the brand and the team.
Reinforcing the nautical roots of each is the intricate wave pattern around the dial. Boasting exceptional water resistance to 300 meters, made possible thanks to the screw-locked crown and case-back, it also features a unidirectional rotating bezel, which prevents any accidental adjustment to the dive time. Forty-four millimeters in diameter and powered by the UN-26 self-winding base caliber, the timepiece offers a power reserve indicator, small seconds register and a date display at 6 o’clock, among other precise functionality.
The Marine Diver Artemis Racing is available through Ulysse Nardin’s worldwide retail network.

IWC Schaffhausen Portofino Hand-Wound Monopusher

IWC Schaffhausen enhances its popular Portofino collection with a brand new mono-pusher chronograph featuring a hand wound movement developed in house.

The Portofino Hand-Wound Monopusher(Ref. IW515103/IW515104) sets itself apart with an ingenious single push-button stopwatch that measures time for up to 60 minutes. The chronograph push-button is integrated in the crown and at glance is virtually invisible. Repeatedly pressing the single, multifunctional push-button starts, stops and resets the chronograph. When the button is pushed for the third time, all the chronograph displays return to zero.
The newly developed movement in the Hand Wound Monopusher is a worthy addition to IWC’s in-house Movements and the range.
The 59360 calibre is an offshoot of the high-performing5 9000-movement family with the outstanding feature of a chronograph mechanism built into the movements. The owner can look forward to a 192-hour movement, which, when fully wound, will run accurately for eight whole days before automatically stopping.
The amount of energy remaining is displayed on the power reserve display on the dial between “8 o’clock” and “9o’clock”.Thesubdial at“12o’clock”displaysthenumberof minutes recorded by the chronograph while the seconds can be read off on the central hand. Together with the small-seconds subdial at “6o’clock” and the date display at “3 o’clock” it results in a well-proportioned dial design.
The sapphire-glass back exposes an IWC-manufactured movement decorated with Geneva stripes together with the chronograph mechanism.
The Portofino Hand Wound Monopusher is available either in white gold with a slate-coloured dial and grey Santoni alligator leather strap or in an 18-carat red gold version with an attractive silver-plated dial and brown Santoni alligator leather strap.

Björn Hendal - 'New Vintage' Collection

Specialised in the production of classic themed watches, Björn Hendal is a sister brand of Blancier, a highly experienced and established watch brand renowned for high-quality and creative watches, Made in Germany.
Designed and created in Sweden, Björn Hendal watches integrate classic styles with modern Swedish design. In this article we highlight the brand’s chronograph wristwatch collection labelled New Vintage.
Timepieces from this collection are inspired by the early chronograph watches of the 1940s and 1950s. Björn Hendal watches have an appearance that is reminiscent of this period; however, they have a bigger diameter (44mm) than vintage watches. So the brand has coined the label ‘New Vintage’. This watch has a very classic but easy to change into a preppy appearance by using “easy to change” croco and lizard leather straps and the preppy nato style straps.
Dressed in a 44-mm, slim case (5 mm), this timepiece boasts a chronograph dial with three smaller dials: a seconds indicator, a minutes indicator that counts up to one hour, and, unusually, a 24-hour indicator. The hands and indicators contrast very nicely with the colour of the dial.
The 22-mm quick release "Lizard" leather watch strap has an 18-carat matching gold-plated "Björn Hendal" engraved buckle.

Armin Strom Skeleton Pure Only Watch edition 2015

For biennial Only Watch event scheduled on November 7 in Geneva, Swiss watch manufacture Armin Strom has created the Skeleton Pure Only Watch edition 2015 timepiece that will be auctioned for charity. The auction benefit supports scientific and medical research regarding Duchenne muscular dystrophy. For the first time, the auction will be held in Geneva and be the opening event of Geneva Watch Auction Week, when hundreds of connoisseurs and collectors gather in the city.

The Only Watch collection of 44 one-of-a-kind fine timepieces will be unveiled at the Monaco Yacht Show September 23-26 and followed by a four-city tour of Hong Kong, Beijing, New York and London in October. It will be displayed in Geneva for two days prior to the auction, which will be conducted by Phillips in association with Bacs & Russo.
The ARMIN STROM Skeleton Pure Only Watch edition 2015 is powered by Calibre ARM09-S and features a striking PVD coated matte black main plate and bridges. Colorization enhances the dimension and definition of the movement's complex design.
The entirely skeletonized Calibre ARM09-S is a manual-wind, double-barrel movement with an eight-day power reserve. The dial exhibits hours, minutes, small seconds and power reserve indicator. ARMIN STROM designs its watches so the more intricate side of the calibre is visible on the dial side. When the Skeleton Pure is wound, the double-barrel movement creates an engaging animation.
Through five auctions spanning 10 years, Only Watch has raised more than 15 million Euros to finance scientific and medical research regarding neuromuscular diseases and Duchenne muscular dystrophy. The event is organized by Association Monégasque contre les Myopathies, the Monaco Yacht Show and Phillips auction house in association with Bacs & Russo.

BOLDR Watches - VOYAGE Collection

After successfully launching a line of hand-made mechanical watches in 2014 under Travisleon Watch Company, childhood friends Travis Tan and Leon Leong, now announce a new range of hybrid watches under a new label: BOLDR Watches. In this new project, the company based in Singapore and Malaysia will be offering a new line of functional hybrid ‘clever watches’ dedicated to the active urban wearer.
With an analog aviator-style dial on the outside, but packed with smart wearable technology inside – the Voyage represents the collision of classic style and modern technology. Nearly a year of meticulous design and research went into creating the custom internal components and stellar design of this first collection, termed a hybrid ‘clever watch.’
Starting with a Miyota 2025 Quartz Movement, and a proprietary BOLDR Smartmodule - the internal components were custom-designed to fit snugly within a sleek 43mm case with solder-on lugs. Packaged with a 22mm premium leather strap with quick release tabs on the underside - the Voyage line comes in 6 striking colours. The technology behind the Voyage stems from its one-of-a-kind BOLDR Smartmodule, seamlessly connecting to your smartphone via Bluetooth 4.0.
The design inspiration came from classic, aviator-style watches. As for the functions, the duo of Travis and Leon assessed what a modern urbanite would require to assist in their everyday lives - and custom-designed an internal package of smart wearable technology with the wearer in mind.
The VOYAGE features an in-built pedometer that helps to track your daily exercise goals such as distance, steps and calories burned. Just sync it to your phone via the app and the watch will monitor your movement throughout your day.
In addition, BOLDR watches offer call alerts, messages and app notifications to your wrist via embedded LEDs and a built-in vibration motor. The notifications can be customized via the app. Thanks to its Anti-Loss function; the watch immediately alerts the wearer in case his smart phone is lost.
The VOYAGE doesn’t require a battery charger. An easily replaceable battery (CR2032) powers the BOLDR Smartmodule for up to 6 months. The quartz movement of the watch is powered with a separate battery that comes with a 3 years of battery life.
Voyage also includes a shutter feature, letting you remotely snap pictures with your smartphone’s camera with the simple push of a button.
In addition, the BOLDR Watches team is constantly innovating and adding new smart features to the app, keeping the Voyage and all future collections up-to-date. For the watch itself, the team is planning for a yearly release of limited-run collections – consisting of all-new designs, beginning with 2015’s Voyage.

The pre-sale launch of the BOLDR Voyage will take place on Kickstarter - kicking off on August 29, 2015. Via the Kickstarter page, customer can place pre-orders of the Voyage at an initial starting price of USD $129. This debut line will also feature a limited, one-time only “Kickstarter Edition” engraving on the back. Once it’s made available stores in 2016, the Voyage will retail at USD $179.

Update: 29 Aug 15

Now the comprehensively re-defined Trident is presented in two stunning new editions – the C60 Trident Pro Vintage Steel Edition and the C60 Trident Pro Vintage Black Edition (each in 38mm and 42mm options).
The Trident Pro models feature a comprehensively re-engineered case, watertight to 600 metres, encasing the fine Swiss made self-winding movement and providing a powerful platform for the matt-finish zirconia ceramic uni-directional bezel with a tetragonal structure that absorbs energy by expanding on impact, giving exceptional strength and protection.  The two stunning new case finishes in steel and black are completed by the ‘CW’ signature deep-stamped back-plate, ensuring all-round beauty.
In the two new models the Trident’s optimal engineering is now complemented with striking but subtly innovative aesthetic touches.  Firstly, the baton style indexes carry an intense new lume, SuperLuminova™ Old Radium Vintage, to deliver significantly enhanced visibility.

The vintage theme is further echoed in the sandblasting of the hands and indices, complementing the matt bezel and creating a patina redolent of times past.  This atmospheric effect can be further enhanced through the option of the handcrafted, vintage leather strap or, alternatively, can be dialled-down with the option of the classic stainless steel bracelet, adding a more contemporary balance.
The second new Trident model, the C60 Trident Pro Vintage Black Edition (42mm), exuding a dynamic air, particularly when presented in its multi-textured combination of black dial, case, bezel and black PVD stainless steel bracelet.
The new models (38mm and 42mm) are offered with the options of the Vintage Italian leather strap with CW motif buckle – from £599 – or 316L Marine grade bracelet with diver’s extension and classic steel or black PVD finish - from £660 – and are available on pre-order, for mid-September.

TAG Heuer - New 2015 AQUARACER 300M Ceramic bezel (41 & 43 mm) - Official watch of the World Surf League & Big Wave Tour

As Official TimeKeeper and Official Watch of the World Surf League & Big Wave Tour, TAG Heuer introduces a new Aquaracer 300m Ceramic. TAG Heuer’s passionate affair with water sports began from its patent of one of the first water-resistant cases for a pocket watch in 1895, the World’s first Chronograph with regatta dial and tide indicator: the Mareograph / Seafarer in 1950, and now with the launch of the new 2015 Aquaracer 300m.

The new Aquaracer 300M collection exemplifies the line’s performance qualities more than ever; but also enhances its refined, sporty allure. Each timepiece is a great seafarer and diving instrument developed to meet the extreme requirements of professional water-sports, with a 300M water resistant case, a unidirectional rotating bezel with 6 studs for perfect grip, a screw-in crown, unscratchable ceramic dial and highly visible luminescent markers.
This casual yet elegant diving watch features a newly designed bezel for a dynamic look. This Unidirectional bezel measures time limits or elapsed dive time. An accidental movement of the bezel could only reduce the indicated time remaining, an essential safety factor for divers. The watch also features six ergonomic studs to easily set it up when wearing gloves and a screw-in crown for more security at depth.
The case, bezel and bracelet features high grade finishing. The unscratchable dial with horizontal streak effects offers an avant-garde look. The luminescent markers on indexes and hands provide high legibility.
The strap featuring a folding clasp with a double security lock, prevents any accidental opening and with a special diving extension. Water-resistant to 300 meters: strict testing, double gaskets and rigorous, manufacturing standards make of the new Aquaracer a highly reliable watch.
