Victorinox Swiss Army Airboss Mach 9 Limited Edition

Drawing inspiration from aviation, this timepiece owes its name to the supreme master of all air operations aboard an aircraft carrier—the air boss. A utilitarian timepiece whose fundamental essence is functionality and a chronograph reinforced with a slide rule. Together, they create the watch’s distinctive character. Designed for the aviation industry, it has become a reference popular with aesthetes.

The role of the officer in charge of counting down to landings and takeoffs requires unfailing precision and attention to detail—founding features of the aesthetic and technical characteristics of the Airboss collection. A case of generous dimensions, readability optimized for both day and night with a broad, contrasting dial enhanced by large luminescent Arabic numerals and understated counters. To increase the three-dimensional effect, the 24-hour military time is printed—in Victorinox red—under the sapphire crystal. The chronograph push-pieces and the crown have been inverted and placed on the left-hand side of the case. Thus inverted, they serve as a reminder that the air boss must be able to operate his watch while wearing gloves.
The crown at 2 o’clock enables the wearer to activate the circular slide rule situated on an inner rotating flange. This instrument was originally developed to facilitate calculations when airborne. It can carry out a multitude of operations—conversion, multiplication, division, and the calculation of time and distance. A rule of three, useful in everyday life, enables the wearer to convert miles into kilometers per hour, measure fuel consumption and calculate exchange rates or even a tip. In this
age of high technology, analogue mechanical calculation instruments still have pride of place—proof of their usefulness in all situations. Heroic and high-performance, they experience no technical faults, crashes, or short circuits and remain the instruments of choice of engineers, architects and financiers.
With a robust 45 mm case, the Airboss Mach 9 Limited Edition is made of titanium, a light and resistant metal. Its sandblasted finish gives it a matt appearance which seems to absorb all the light surrounding it. This finish highlights its lines and gives it an authentic character. Fastened to a brown brushed leather strap—reminiscent of aviator jackets—the watch also features a removable cuff. Used in the past by pilots to prevent the cold metal touching their wrist, the cuff also enables the large 45 mm diameter to fit smaller wrists.

Equipped with an ETA 7750 automatic chronograph movement, the Airboss Mach 9 Limited Edition presents a balance of functions and design, with small seconds at 3 o’clock, a 30-minute counter at 6 o’clock with date, and a 12-hour counter at 12 o’clock.

Released in a limited edition of 250 numbered pieces, this is a reliable timepiece that is both easy to read and handle. A top-flight instrument which will win over both aesthetes and watchmaking enthusiasts.
