INKWELL - Watch Brand Inspired By Tattoo Art

In this article we feature INKWELL, a young watch brand established by George Roberts in 2014. INKWELL produces unique wrist watches featuring unique tattoo design patterns created in association with professional tattoo artists and employing an exclusive printing technology similar to an actual tattoo with its natural depth of lines and shapes.
The history of this new brand starts with the founder’s grandfather, Rupert Inkwell, who had a small watch workshop in his days. He served in the army during World War II as a sailor and began to tattoo his fellow soldiers in the process. After the war he restored his watch business, but he still was carried away with tattoo art his entire life. Inspired with his grandfather, George decided to create a timepiece dedicated to his ancestor's life and passions which now define Inkwell family heritage.
Two years back, George Roberts gathered a group of like-minded persons and started the development of INKWELL project. The main goal of the project was to transfer physical properties of tattoo onto leather straps, not simply make a beautiful but ordinary print.
After two years of researching, development and prototyping, INKWELL, the new watch brand inspired by tattoo art was born. The brand has recently launched an online crowd founding campaign for the funding of its debut collection.
The first series from INKWELL offers three timepieces: KNOT, VOR and Swallow. The KNOT and VOR are dedicated to men whereas Swallow is a feminine timepiece.
INKWELL KNOT
Inspired from the adventurous life of sailors, the Knot watch features an overall design and coloring work inspired from the vintage styles popular in the beginning of XX century. The Knot watch comes in a golden PVD-coated stainless steel case and an engraved enamel dial.
INKWELL VOR
The Vor timepiece is inspired by the Russian criminal tattoos used to tell stories of its bearer's crimes, serve as a personal characteristic and describe rank in the prison hierarchy. Russian criminal tattoo takes its origins in the middle of XIX century, when prisoners were branded with the word VOR on their faces. The Vor watch has a black PVD-coated stainless steel case with an embossed dial image.
INKWELL Swallow
Dedicated for the ladies who admire tattoo art, the Swallow watch has a classic matt stainless steel case and a reflecting mirror dial.
Each INKWELL watch is made of 316L stainless steel with an option of PVD coating and houses a Ronda 763 Swiss quartz movement. Watch cases designed after the original creation of Rupert Inkwell. Hollow hour and minute hands are equipped with bright red markers, making them more distinguishable on the pied dials. The second hand has a shape of a tattoo needle. The case back of the watch is engraved with technical information and INKWELL logo and motto.
Each INKWELL watch comes with a signature sturdy leather strap created with unique embossing imprints which provide authentic depth and physical qualities to the image and colored by hand. The packaging is a leather roll decorated in tattoo stylistics.
