Montblanc 4810 ExoTourbillon Slim (New Models in White Gold and Red Gold)

After the successful launch of the Montblanc 4810 Collection in 2016, the Maison is introducing two new 4810 ExoTourbillon Slim models in white gold and red gold. Like their predecessors, they combine the Maison’s patented ExoTourbillon complication with the addition of a quick stop-second function.

The one-minute ExoTourbillon construction was developed entirely in-house by the engineers and watchmakers at the Montblanc Manufacture. The Exo in the name is derived from the Greek for external or outside and refers to the screw balance, which is positioned outside of the tourbillon’s rotating cage.
The ExoTourbillon outperforms standard tourbillon constructions for two reasons: firstly, the weight of the cage of the ExoTourbillon is disconnected from the balance wheel, and secondly, the weight of the cage is minimal, thus resulting in higher precision and improved isochronism. The balance wheel, 9.7 mm in diameter, also plays an important part in the performance of the timepiece thanks to its 18 screws—with four of them that can be adjusted and the other 14 that are fixed—further improving precision and giving a traditional watchmaking look.

The barrel, with its 48-hour power reserve, is embedded under the main plate. Its position within the architecture of the movement was the result of a high level of development and testing that sought out the optimal equilibrium between the barrel, the rotor and the balance wheel.

The automatic ExoTourbillon calibres MB M29.21 and MB M29.24 both incorporate a micro-rotor decorated with a Côtes de Genève “en Eventail” motif that allows an uninterrupted view on each movement through a sapphire crystal case back, in comparison to a standard rotor that always hides half of the movement. Both constructions measure a mere 4.5 mm in height, a feat in itself for calibres of this complexity.

A red arrow on the tourbillon cage indicates the seconds and features a practical quick stop-mechanism. This quick stop-second function is made possible thanks to the construction of a whip, which halts the large screw balance with its 18 screws and restarts it on demand. Optimal geometry and kinematics were studied in depth to find the right angle at the end of the whip, allowing the user to set the time to the exact second and ensure an immediate restart of the movement. The quick stop-second mechanism instantly stops the balance from swinging and upsetting the precision of the watch. All the functions and operations are set via the crown at 3 o’clock: Position 1 for winding the movement and position 2 for setting the time and for the quick stop-seconds mechanism. In addition, the calibre MB M29.21 features a gauge on the dial that informs the wearer which setting the crown is in.

Montblanc 4810 ExoTourbillon Slim, White Gold Model
This new Montblanc 4810 ExoTourbillon Slim comes in a 42 mm case made of 18 K white gold of the utmost elegance, with a satinated middle part and rounded horns that are straight on the top, yet curved underneath for maximum comfort on the wrist. Like its name suggests, the Montblanc 4810 ExoTourbillon Slim is exceptionally thin for a tourbillon of this complexity with a total height of 10.14 mm.
The starry night dial is particularly eye-catching with its upper part made of shiny dark blue aventurine and its lower part displaying the iconic ExoTourbillon construction against a refined Côtes de Genève motif. This sophisticated look is enhanced by a prominent rhodium-plated “XII” at the top of the dial and skeletonized hour and minute hands in the centre that are regate-shaped and have been rhodium-plated as well to perfectly match the overall design of the timepiece. Running around the outside of the dial, a discreet minute track has been added in blue.
The Montblanc 4810 ExoTourbillon Slim is fitted with a black alligator strap. For utmost performance and reliability, the timepiece has been rigorously tested by the Montblanc Laboratory Test 500 that simulates over 500 hours of real-life wear.
